Give Em Hell, Malone

At face value, I should have loved this. An ultra violent, comic book style crime noir with Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames much in the vein of Sin City. Execution was terrible and not very interesting. By the end I could care less.

Half of Wahlberg movies are like this, the other half are actually good. Thats why I said awhile back hes one of the most consistently watchable actors for me. Out of his 24 movies through 2009, Max Payne and The Happening were his only swings and misses IMO (and The Happening is so bad its almost good/funny)...He's got plenty of well known movies, but he also got some smaller, underrated movies in his resume like The Yards, Traveller, and The Truth About Charlie.

...with Sniper being the most awesome.

I've said it before- I think he's truly awful. Consistently awful. He's done some good movies, fun movies- but I've never liked him in any of them.

I could see not thinking he's a highly talented actor, but he's good at what he does - tough guys with a sense of humor. Playing Mickey Ward in The Fighter might be his first role where he is playing a serious character (Bale looks like he might get nominated for this BTW)Like I said, 90% of his movies are pretty good and entertaining, and then there's the handful of his movies that were very good: The Departed, Three Kings, Boogie Nights, We Own The Night, Basketball Diaries

I don't know - I think the scene with him and his mom is laughably bad. "you don't know what I can do!!"

Walberg's acting in that Boogie Nights works for me because he's playing someone completely in his range - which is almost zero.

I've said it before- I think he's truly awful. Consistently awful. He's done some good movies, fun movies- but I've never liked him in any of them.

this is pretty much my assessment of him. he has absolutely no range as an actor. when he's able to hit the right note for his role, it is the same note over and over again.

He mostly stinks. But to be fair, range is only one consideration when viewing an actor. How much range does Clint Eastwood have?I enjoyed Walberg in The Departed - although that wasn't exactly a challenging role.

Just watched Play Misty For Me last night. Eastwood's directorial debut. Not a great film, but enjoyable nonetheless. Fatal Attraction seems like somewhat of a ripoff on it, but maybe that's just me.

I just saw The Backup Plan. I really wanted to like this chick flick, but Jennifer Lopez is such a horrible actress she should be banned from every movie set. The best scene where was she fainted head first into the water where her fellow support group friend had just given birth and and also squeezed out a log.

Jennifer's Body-Mrs TRF and I will never get that 1.5 hours of our life back. The only redeeming quality of the movie is...well, I'm not so sure there are any redeeming qualities....Don't watch it....even for Megan "toe thumb" Fox.

Finally caught Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Yes. It was just as bad as it sounds.

Which actually sucks because the first one wasn't that terrible for a family movie.

Caught Transformers 2 again as well. It still sucks.

It's funny. Dominic West has a weird accent. If I didn't know he was British, I'd say he has a terrible fake accent.

Bandslam - I really liked this movie, but I am very partial to HS movies. There was a lot of discussion / dialogue about bands that was pretty cool. It did have a 'geek gets the girl' type plot that is often overplayed, but I don't really get tired of it. At least it wasn't Cera this time. Lisa Kudrow played her part pretty well. I like HS movies, and I like bands / music... so I liked this film.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this film. I basically tuned in cuz Vanessa Hudgens is hot but it was a fun movie. The music was good and I thought it did a good job of portraying how each of three main characters were struggling to discover who they really were. I think it got lost at the box office because people assumed it was a "High School Musical" clone with Hudgens but the film is much better than that in my opinion.

Just noticed the 2nd movie in the Girl Tatoo trilogy "The Girl Who Played with Fire" added and bumped to #1 in my Netflix queue.Already have seen Audition, very twisted and interesting but did not think it was on the level of The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo. Run Lola Run looks interesting so I also added that to my queue. On this genre of films I would suggest Alexandra's Project, different and very well done IMO.

I'll never see this. But I admit that the title cracks me up every time I hear it.

IIRC, it's the highest grossing movie of all time directed by a woman.

I'm 36 now, but was about 33 or 34 at the time. She was in her 40's, but had had a kid at 18, who had later had a kid at 17, which made her a hot grandma. Anywho, in addition to the daughter, she also had a son who was a freshman or sophomore in high school, who was not very happy that his mom was dating me.

So anyways, if any of you know me from this thread, you know that I lean towards the "movie snob" end of the movie watching scale. In fact I'm waaaaaaaaay over on that end. All this talk of Alvin & the Chipmunks reminded me of the first time I was in the house with the woman when her son was home, and we were flipping through the channels. The kid asked me if I had ever seen it. I said no, I must have missed that one. He replied "It's only the greatest movie in the history of the world".

The Lovely Bones: This movie really drives home the importance of post production film editing because whoever was in charge of it for this film (I'm looking at you Peter Jackson) was horrible. This movie had an interesting enough premise (many film approach the premise of the dead viewing life from the other side) but it just seemed to have no idea what it wanted to be.

Three scenes jump out as examples of this:

2) Susan Sarrandon as the zany mother-in-law coming to stay with the family. - Okay wtf? Did I suddenly end up in a romantic comedy with Hugh Grant and J-Lo? This sequence had no place in this movie.

3) Ronan's anger in the afterlife influencing Wahlberg and making him pursue Tucci with the baseball bat. While I like how they resolved that scene the fact that Ronan, who previously suggested no remorse at her death, A) was now angry at Tucci & B) her mood influencing the living were just sprung upon the audience out of nowhere. Zero development of these premises prior to that scene.

Bonus #4) So now she can not only be seen by the living, which I thought was well established early in the film, but she can possess them too? And she decides to not go to heaven because she has business to take care of on earth then it turns out that business is to kiss the British tool (our happy Hollywood ending) instead of y'know, draw some attention to the guy who is dumping her body in the sinkhole. Sure we get to satisfy our need for justice (revenge/blood lust) a little later but the wheels completely fell off for me at this point.

Agree completely with #1. Had no place in the movie. I didn't read the book but I guess it might have had some significance there but it should have been edited out.Mega-agree with #2. During that scene, I turned to my wife and said, "This movie is all over the place.". Should have been edited out.

3. I find that believable. Their bond allowed the influence.

4. There's a scene early on when they first introduce the dark haired girl where Suzie says something to the effect of, "I didn't realize until later that she could see things other people couldn't".

Just re-watched At Close Range for the first time in a long while. Excellent flick. Walken needs to do gritty more. He's become a caricature of himself lately and I miss the Walken that actually made you think he was insane. One of Penn's better performances as well. Holds up well for a nearly 25 year old film.

Great supporting cast too. RD Call, Tracy Walter, JC Quinn, David Strathairn (he's epileptic), Crispin Glover...

Showdown in Little Tokyo

On a technical level, this is complete garbage. Bad script, bad acting, terrible plot. On an awesomeness level, this flick is off the charts. You know when someone jump kicks over a movie car in the first 5 minutes, you are in for a treat. Some good ole fashioned 80's style martial arts with lots of kicking. The constant one liners truely take this film to another level. Here is a small sample:

Yoshida: You are dead!

Chris Kenner: Hell sucked! We are back!

Johnny Murata: Kenner, just in case we get killed, I wanted to tell you that you have the biggest #### I've ever seen on a man.

Chris Kenner: [nods] Thank you.

Plus, I can't believe the beer bottles full of crystal meth plan didn't work out as well as the Yakuza hope, that was genious!

4/5 on a man scale

Don't know about the movie, but the song is awesome.I too do not look good in leggings. Nor have I ever been to Boston in the fall.

I remember taking my son to that movie. There was a guy in line in front of me, and he said, "Two tickets for the Oakland Raider movie. Yanno...The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything."

I thought that was a great line.

There is some great cheese in this movie. Also love Freddy Kruger dressed in leather and a collar with a cheesy accent.
