Even though I'm a movie snob, I went against my better judgment and listened to some in here, watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World last night. Holy crap, that was awful. The concept of 80's video games appeals to me. Japanese manga appeals to me. Cute chicks with colored hair appeal to me. I really like Jason Schwartzman. Michael Cera still makes me laugh on occasion. But this was nothing more than a paycheck for all involved. Complete rubbish. (1/5)

Watched a couple tonight to take a break from Marty movies.

The Other Guys was a decent comedy. Laughed out loud a handful of times, but for me it was just a tad too corny for repeated viewings. Falls into the 'would watch a couple more times' category. 6/10

The Town will pop up into my best of 2010 list. I think the comparisons to Heat are justified. It had a similar 'feel' and similar themes. However, it definitely didn't come off as a cheap knock off. I think The Town was more tense and gritty than Heat. One things for sure - Affleck has a damn good start to his directing career with this movie and Gone Baby Gone. (Would like to see him do something outside of his Boston comfort zone though). 8/10
If Affleck makes more movies like Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Good Will Hunting (written by Ben, not directed), I don't care where they take place. I loved The Town.

Watched After Hours on the recommendations in here. Don't know how I missed it until now. Great, great movie. Wish there were more movies like it. It's exciting following a character start to finish with absolutely no clue what's going to happen next. Some very funny moments too.

I'd almost rather Affleck doesn't stray from Boston if it's what he's most comfortable with. Scorsese usually stays in New York. If using the same setting allows him to make movies as good as The Town then he shouldn't fix what isn't broken.

So I'm the only one that's watched The Fighter...I thought you guys appreciated good film?

Let' me know when you've seen the best film of the year and arguably the best individual performance of the year by Bale.

Just finished watching this. Agree with the accolades in this thread; incredibly well done, especially for a movie that seems like it could easily have slipped into something formulaic. Great pacing, excellent acting all around (even Ben Affleck wasn't bad), and a really appealing visual style. I'm sure it's been discussed, but the resemblance between the lead actress (who was phenomenal IMO) and a young Madeleine Stowe is uncanny. I'd give this a solid 4/5, maybe even 4.5/5.KP, good question on how to do Inception without the lengthy explanation. I haven't (and likely won't) spend any real time thinking about it, but I believe that a skilled director (as opposed to a mere lawyer who likes movies a lot) wouldn't have too tough a time depositing bits of information without screaming "here is everything you need to know!" I always hate when directors don't give their audiences enough credit for being able to pick up on stuff without being hit over the head with it.

Random fact about The Town:

Rebecca Hall, the female lead (also excellent in Vicky Christina Barcelona) is the daughter of Peter Hall, famed British theater director and the founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company

Any relation to Tammany Hall?Krista- totally agree about your gripe with the character to character movie/plot explanation side-bar. Weak sauce.I'll have to see The Town now.Hey, all.... I'll have a day to myself on Wednesday and am thinking about catching a movie.... like in the theaters... like what normal people do. Any recommendations? Or do I just rent something.

While I agree with you, Inception was so complex it didnt even occur to me to think why Nolan didnt just explain to you how everything works more subtle. This might be the first movie where I actually needed to be explained what was going on and how everything worked.I also think this is a movie that if you arent totally engaged with from the start, you arent going to enjoy it.

Very much looking forward to it, but will likely see it on Blu Ray. I want to see Black Swan and True Grit in the theater, and I can only afford so many movie nights.

Have avoided this movie cause Affleck is probably my most annoying actor currently, but it's at the dollar movie now so maybe I'll go check it out.

Fair enough, but a movie like After Hours is nothing like Goodfellas even though they are set in the same city. It is just a small gripe, and granted Affleck only made 2 movies. They are both damn good, but the characters/feel seemed similar in the 2 movies.

Cool. Like I stated, I only watched it the one time. I know when I hear voiceover I am practically yelling at the screen, so I get where you are coming from. Plan to watch Inception again soon, and now you have planted the seed about this in my mind, so I will pay more attention when Romeo explains #### to Kitty Pryde.

Drug-addicts shooting/smoking up and "chilling" (loudly moaning, screaming or otherwise being addicts), cheap-bastards on dates (oh, hi) practically date-raping their cheap dates (sorry, Candice, Mira, Jenni, Lisa.....)... basically all manner of mayhem and noise. The extra 5 or 6 bucks at the time was most definitely worth it- although I learned to see big, loud movies to help drown out the freaks.Closed about 10 years ago- with the 3yo, I'd kill for that now.

King of Comedy

Props to jdoggy for giving me I needed to bump this to the top of my queue. For some reason I always thought this was a Jerry Lewis biography. Totally unprepared for another dose of mentally unbalanced DeNiro. Nobody plays psycho quite the same way or quite as effective as DeNiro and sometimes seeing his films now you forget that there was a time that he did load up in the effort department. Great stuff, without having to resort to anything cliched or even graphically violent. I really liked After Hours after seeing it recently, but dangnabit, this just might be better. It just has that little something extra that allows me to call it a classic.

4.5/5

KP, definitely add this to your Scorsese list, especially since you enjoyed After Hours.

The Enforcer

Third Dirty Harry movie. Another one that makes you realize just how much more awesome 70's action movies were then ones released today. Politically incorrect and realistic violence. Still pretty silly and was a fairly big step down from the first two installments. Still a great way to kill couple of hours on a weekend afternoon.

re: spoiler- the latter, IMO... goes both ways nicely.Funny, but I don't really even see Rupert as psycho... a little unhinged, yeah- but pretty much an every-man/nerd, except he takes a stab at glory. Bernhardt, on the other hand...

And how good a performance does Jerry Lewis give? So nuanced and human... it's like Scorcese told him to play the anti-60s Lewis. I thought I said it in here, and I know I said it in KP's thread- but I looooove this movie.

A Christmas Story Not just a great Christmas movie, but a great movie. Reminds us of what it was like to be a kid at Christmas. It is as close to perfect as a movie can get. Yes, it's THAT good. 4.9999999/5

Watch it every year. Classic.

Oh Fuuuuuuuudge.

I need to add to my A-Team comments.

I was a massive fan of the TV show. I still remember getting excited waiting for the season opener after they were shot by a military firing squad in one of the last seasons. Always got a kick out of the opening credits withe Cylon. Overall just liked the show a lot.

When I saw that this movie was being made I was upset. No one could be Col. Smith and no one could replace BA. Face and Murdock were almost irreplaceable too, to me, although they are in some senses rather genreal characters that can be redone fairly easily (I wonder if Jim Carrey could have pulled off Murdoch? I digress). So overall I was not looking forward to another one of my childhood favorites being raped by hollywood.

The storyline, the stunts and the effects were all current hollywood. I was a little bummed that they made them modern day guys but I guess you have to because Vietnam vets are getting up there in age at this point. At least there wasn't any current political propaganda in there. So overall it was a fun popcorn flick in that regard.

The guys they got to play the roles though were really really good. The new Murdoch hit the role perfectly. Couldn't have done it any better. Rampage did a very good BA and they remembered that some of the best lines in the show were between BA and Murdoch. Face was solid although slightly too comical. And Liem Neeson did a very good job as Col. Smith. It didn't feel like they were damaging the charecters in any way.

I was pleasantly surprised. I actually watched it 3 times in 2 days to get my money's worth from Comcast and just because it was fun overall. I will be looking forward to a sequel here, which is rare for me.

Rewatched both Narnia movies this weekend as my son was going to see the third one today as a school trip.

Lion Witch and Wardrobe was very well done. The kids they got to play the roles hit them very well. The CGI stuff was pretty solid although there are parts where Aslan looks comical. I know it's Disney but a little more should have been made of the religious overtones of the story. I know I'm biased there but the story is what it is. Still, that is only a mild complaint of this movie. It's a solid 3.5-4/5 stars.

Prince Caspian on the other hand was just a bad movie. The rewrites and changes to the story were terrible and the whole tone was off. Further, the stuff they took out (which was very very soundly based in Christianity) really took a lot of the background of the story out of play and made some things simply hard to follow. The ending jumps at you from nowhere because of all the cuts to the main story throughout. There is no review at all of Caspian or his family which was rather vital not only to that movie but to the following ones as well. The battle scene was well done but at this point those scenes are rather overdone. I can't give this one anymore than a 2.5/5 and I think I'm being generous there.

My wife said that the movie today was pretty good but she didn't read the book. I understand that the producers wanted to get back more to the actual Narnia story and away from what Disney did to it. We'll see.

Sweet  I've only seen it once, and this makes me watch to see it again.
It really had me thinking a lot about it today. So hard to pull off black comedy anyway, and I don't think I've ever seen it done quite so well without being profane, vulgar, or mean spirited. I don't know if there is even a curse word in it to tell you the truth. Masterful film making by Scorsese. El Floppo's comment about Jerry Lewis's character being the "true" antagonist of the film is also interesting, it could be perceived both ways. Also liked some of the social commentary it was able to blend in. Rupert Punkin worrying more about the what the show's producers have to say while the FBI is trying to interrogate him was entertaining. The way everyone mispronounced his name was something that would have been right at home in a classic Coen brothers film.

This is like a perfect version of the black comedy that Death to Smoochy was attempting to capture.

 Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that the theater you are talking about is in NYC, or perhaps it has more to do with the fact that the theater I was talking about was in a Canadian suburb, but my experience at the $2 theaters was a lot different than your's. The $2 theater I went to was pretty well dead, no matter what movie you went into see at least 75% of the seats were empty. Any druggies that were there kept to themselves so there was no issue there. And although there were some loud/bratty children/bad parents at the theater at times, they must have kept to the kiddie movies because I can't recall seeing any kids in the R movies.

In that scene you can hear someone in the background yelling "kill himmmm!". :bag: Love it.

Just watched The Glenn Miller Story - it's about to "expire" on Netflix streaming.

Never knew he died in WWII.

Decent film - great spot by Louis Armstrong playing himself.

Just watched The Town based largely on this thread.

What an awesome movie --- one of the best I have seen in the last year or 2. The comparisons to Heat are very accurate. I could feel the tension ripping through the screen in a few scenes. It was VERY well done. Interesting in that I don't even remember it being in the theaters.

I think the acting was excellent with the exception of the FBI agent. There was something about him that wasn't quite perfect.

I loved the ending of this movie. There were a lot of ways they could have gone and I applaud Affleck and the writers for this ending.

Overall 4.8/5 for me. Best I have seen in a long time.

If it hasn't been mentioned already "Temple Grandin" was one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

Never been a fan of Claire Danes and was surprised she won an Emmy this past year. That was until I watched Temple Grandin. She was exceptional as was Julia Ormand who won an Emmy as well.

This movie would have been a big Oscar contender had it been released in theaters first. A must see if you have an autistic kid as well.
Temple Grandin is a great flick. I had to see if this one had been mentioned in this thread (obviously it has).A truly interesting movie. Danes was awesome and I agree could have easily won and Oscar had this been made for the big screen. 4.7/5

Another great HBO movie is Something the Lord Made which is also based on a true story (first open heart surgery) and has a surprisingly solid performance by rapper Mos Def. Highly recommend it - especially if you like medicine. 4.7/5

OK, a lot schmaltzy... but still a great movie (Wonderful Life). Capra is a master behind the camera, and for my money this is his masterpiece.
