Zoned out to a couple "horror" movies today:

Cabin Fever -

Not great, but I still had fun with this one. There is some really clever lines in here -the payoff with the old man and the rifle at the end, etc.. I think Eli Roth should dip back into doing more of the campy horror like this over his other bloody for the sake of being bloody movies. (still like Hostel more than most though).

Cursed -

Basically trying to be Scream with werewolves, but was a dud. Couple funny lines from Baio, but that's about it. Otherwise is has the similar arc to their other movies - kids attacked, figure out who the big baddie is, insert pop culture nods, have celebrity cameos, etc. Pass on this one - I am sure most people already knew that though.

Early Cabin in the Woods reviews:"The premise, execution and laughs see it through. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead are the most obvious touchstones, though the closest comparison is probably Evil Dead II, which so deftly manages to blend laughs and frights."Awesome, completely awesome. Drag Me to Hell had it's moments but I've been missing a film like this since the original Scream. Evil Dead 2 is one of my all time favorites.

Was surprised to read this, as watching the trailers made me think "typical Hollywood horror movie". Now I see written by Joss Whedon, and I know why. I'll check it out on Netflix.

Margin CallIMO, this was a brilliant film and well worth a viewing. I've never heard about it until recently. However, it has a top notch cast, and they deliver.

Should have been nominated for the Academy Awards, imo.

I thought it was on the cusp of Top 10 for '11, but T Kibitzer strongly disagreed..I am really looking forward to Cabin in the Hill or whatever opening Friday. THe advance word has me more anticipatory than I would usually be for a horror film.

I don't remember hating it, but I definitely didn't think it was great. If I remember correctly, I thought it attempted to pull at the heartstrings a little too hard during the dramatic scenes, and as a business layman, I found it difficult to follow along during some of the business scenes. I personally wouldn't put it in my Top 10, but I can understand how others would.Also, Margin Call was nominated for Best Original Screenplay; which I think is probably justified. But I agree with the Academy for once and think it shouldn't have been nominated for anything else.

The Darkest Hour: I don't think I've ever had lower expectations for a movie... and yet it still didn't live up to them. Most.Plot-holes.Ever. 0/5

Really? I put this in my queue because every bluray I rented had this trailer and I thought it looked kinda cool.

Beyond horrible. I enjoy cheesy sci-fi flicks so I figured this might be bearable... hell no. I kind of want someone in here to watch to share in its awfulness.

Ok, so I started watching this last night thinking "it's couldn't be as bad as the FBG's say, right?" and man was I wrong. I only got 20 minutes into it before I was disgusted and turned it off. I have no idea where they spent the $30M budget.- the cinematography is beyond horrible and it looks like it was shot on video

- I've never seen worse writing, seriously it's like they tried to come up with the lamest lines they possibly could

- the acting is horrible - I couldn't believe that it was the same Emile Hirsch who did Into the Wild

You didn't even make it to the bad parts.

American Reunion. Mildly entertaining. Probably being generous. Wanted to like it but really can't recall a big laugh. Most of the Levy scenes made me cringe. The neighbor's rack saves this movie from being a total dud.

1.5 out of 4 stars.

If you're a fan of post-nuclear, trapped in a shelter movies like I am then I'm sure you will dig this dark, depressing one.

Just watched "The Descendants". Give it a B

Clooney was great and the kid that played Sid surprised me. Other than that, the acting wasn't great. Judy Greer was cringe worthy when she was in the hospital room.

But an enjoyable story

Green Lantern....While not as terrible as I had expected, this was still pretty bad. Best part of it was probably when he first goes to "Lantern land" and goes through training. Other than that, below average CGI and horrific dialogue give this no chance. I thought it was cool how the Lanterns had species from all different planets, galaxies, etc and I think a more interesting plot wouldve been to have a bunch of them go to another planet besides earth and stop some powerhungry king trying to create an empire or something. Im shocked that Tim Robbins, Peter Sarsgaard, and Mark Strong actually agreed to be a part of this...1/5

Barry Munday...Dry comedy about a womanizing slacker who loses his nuts via attack by trumpet only to find out shortly thereafter he recently got another girl preggo. I thought Patrick Wilson was great in this as the title character that is way outside of his uberconfident guy that seemingly every woman would die for roles, and showed his most range to date. It was well written and eventhough it was a dry comedy, it was a little too short on the humor for me to call it really good...3.2/5

The Visitor....What a boring movie. I didnt find myself interested in the drama at all, and a guy was facing being deported. What do you expect when you dont show up for your immigration officer or whatever it was?! Richard Jenkins was good, but isnt he always pretty good? Outside of a couple emotional scenes late, this was par on the course for him. It was a good performance but Im shocked he was nominated for Best Actor...2/5

Turning Green...Based in 1979 Ireland about a couple brothers whose parents shipped them there to live with their aunts. In an attempt to make enough money to return to the US, the 16yr old older brother drops out of school and begins working for a bookie (Alessandro Nivola) and his muscle (Timothy Hutton...lol at Hutton being anyone's muscle). After being sent to London briefly, he discovers xxx pron mags and begins having them shipped in bulk to Ireland when they arent sold to start making rreal money. Nothing special but a nice little movie with character. Had a more serious and dark finish than I expected for a mostly lighthearted movie about a pron-slinging teen...3/5

jenkins is a character actor. he played the lead as a character actor would. most oscar-nominated performances are either much "bigger" or more "obvious". i remember being pleased by the many and unexpected facets to his little dramatic role. it's a performance that was tailor made for the role as written and directed. it's a little movie and follows the same formula that was done with "the station agent".

jenkins is a character actor. he played the lead as a character actor would. most oscar-nominated performances are either much "bigger" or more "obvious". i remember being pleased by the many and unexpected facets to his little dramatic role. it's a performance that was tailor made for the role as written and directed. it's a little movie and follows the same formula that was done with "the station agent".

I thought The Station Agent was very good and much better than this, almost to the point of not comparable.

Season 2 not as good but I was still entertained. I blew through both seasons in like a week. Perhaps If I was waiting a week between episodes season 2 would have bothered me more.

Old age has done a number on me. Used to like AF a bit, but now find it barely watchable because of sappy scenes like this and the party scene preceding it. Would be better to have a grittier/more realistic movie about a tour, but instead it's filtered through Crowe's teenage memory. Sometimes it feels about as realistic as a movie like Rock Star. Probably the point to an extent, but this is one of the rare movies that I can think of that has really taken a hit in my rankings over the years.

That's an evolving, not devolving viewpoint - proud of you. Rock Star (the funniest terrible movie since Motel Hell) is an excellent metaphor for the total wannabe conception behind a R&R tale that is more grossly glamorized than even my version of touring with a 70s band of similar style & fame (the Feat). It is to rockers what Sex & the City is to Manhattan working girls.

Blew me away. I'm not really much of a horror fan, but this was a brilliant effort that had me completely engaged from start to finish. Very impressive and a much better execution of essentially the same topic as Hunger Games.4.5/5 stars

I think Kenny Powers is my clear winner for "person whose views I almost completely disagree with but I enjoy reading anyway.". I appreciate the thoughtfulness in reviews but we are almost always diametrically opposed. This is no exception, as I Absolutely loved this subtle performance and movie.

I think Kenny Powers is my clear winner for "person whose views I almost completely disagree with but I enjoy reading anyway.". I appreciate the thoughtfulness in reviews but we are almost always diametrically opposed. This is no exception, as I Absolutely loved this subtle performance and movie.

One of the reasons I love this thread so much. We have very different personalities and tastes in movies in here, but even after 500+ pages we can all still hold hands and get along.

I really enjoyed T&DvE as well but I think it is all about expectations. I stumbled across it having really never heard of it, not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I had high expectations. But it really is a nice spin on the teens in the woods slasher film.

The Visitor....What a boring movie. I didnt find myself interested in the drama at all, and a guy was facing being deported. What do you expect when you dont show up for your immigration officer or whatever it was?! Richard Jenkins was good, but isnt he always pretty good? Outside of a couple emotional scenes late, this was par on the course for him. It was a good performance but Im shocked he was nominated for Best Actor...2/5

jenkins is a character actor. he played the lead as a character actor would. most oscar-nominated performances are either much "bigger" or more "obvious". i remember being pleased by the many and unexpected facets to his little dramatic role. it's a performance that was tailor made for the role as written and directed. it's a little movie and follows the same formula that was done with "the station agent".

I think Kenny Powers is my clear winner for "person whose views I almost completely disagree with but I enjoy reading anyway.". I appreciate the thoughtfulness in reviews but we are almost always diametrically opposed. This is no exception, as I Absolutely loved this subtle performance and movie.

Zoned out to a couple "horror" movies today:

Cabin Fever -

Not great, but I still had fun with this one. There is some really clever lines in here -the payoff with the old man and the rifle at the end, etc.. I think Eli Roth should dip back into doing more of the campy horror like this over his other bloody for the sake of being bloody movies. (still like Hostel more than most though).

I barely remember this movie, but it did contain one of the funniest exchanges I've ever seen in a horror film:"What are you going to do with that rifle?"

"I'm going to shoot some squirrels."

"Why?"

"Because they're gay."

Downton Mother####ing Abby (to borrow a quote from the Netflix thread)

What a fantastic show. I've only seen one episode, but this is excellent. My wife said to me, "This just shows how bad Mad Men is becoming," and I can't disagree.

Can't stop thinking about this show. Just beautiful.
