how familiar are you with malick's work? if you have seen any of his other films then i think "tree" is consistent with his body of work. he's very much an auteur.

The Skin I Live In - I jokingly touched on this one in an earlier post but wanted to give it a little more because I keep thinking about it.
It's Pedro Almodovar's most recent film and I thought it was very interesting and equally disturbing. It starts off in one direction, Banderas plays a doctor/scientist who has designed a new skin for grafting on burn patients. His motivation was his wife who was horribly burned in an auto accident. I really thought that was the entire direction the film was going to take, and that would have been very interesting to me. But then the film takes a dark turn, not that it was a happy film up to that point but the disturbing factor goes from a 4 to a 9. Not gory, not graphic but definitely twisted and dark.
It's not Almodovar's best work. I thought it started off kind of herky-jerky as they forced an early conflict that, while ultimately understandable and necessary, felt inauthentic in its execution. There was also a lull in the middle during an extended flashback that, again while necessary and forgivable because of the payoff, felt like it took a long time to get to the point. However once it got to the point it's kind of a :headexplode: moment.
Overall I am going to call this a good to very good film that is worth watching.

Tree Of Life has these seemingly pointless shots of nature and the universe that one could just infer as filler. But Malick's asking very powerful emotional questions: what is our place in this vast cosmos? And do our fleeting lives mean anything in comparison?

Tomorrow, When the War Began - Mildly entertaining but it took far too long to get to the whole insurgency thing. I think Drifter would call it Twilight in Australia with the Chinese invading. It's a whatever film that could possibly keep one entertained on a Sunday afternoon (I spent a lot of time doing stuff online while the movie was playing). It is also a film that clearly is trying to set up multiple sequels.
What I found galling was that apparently the author of this series of books, John Marsden, doesn't feel the need to give any sort of attribution to Red Dawn whatsoever. Now I haven't seen any interviews with the guy and I don't claim to have done much more research than googling "John Marsden Red Dawn" but he seems to be playing it off as if it is somehow all his own original idea, when he should be putting I TOOK THIS IDEA FROM RED DAWN in big bold red letters in every article relating to this series of books.

I had an epiphany awhile back about films set in the 60s and 70s that look terrible:
Watching HBO's Cinema Verite - a fantastic movie if you ever get a chance - I thought the movie captured the clothing and the art direction of the time very accurately. And I started to wonder why some movies set in that era look so fake. Two things: 1) Cinema Verite used lenses and filters to slightly desaturate the color so it wasn't artificially bright. 2) Movies that get this right don't just use bright colored clothing with bell bottoms and big collars. They use costumes that actually feel like they've been worn.

Latest Jason Straitham vehicle. I'm not going to go all gushy over it, but if you have a couple hours to kill on a rainy afternoon and this one starts in 5 minutes when you look at the cineplex marquee, you'll be very pleased. I didn't look at my watch for over an hour and was highly entertained.

I thought The Mechanic was very solid. I also think Ben Foster is unheralded though, so maybe thats part of it.Besides that, every preview of Statham movies looks like someone avoiding a Transporter, hoping to get Cranked, and being Safe in the end..Kudos to Statham, he caught on late and has a small window to be that action guy, but most of his movies are meh meaningless action garbage.

What an odd film this was. Like you, I really enjoyed the first bit of the movie, although I loved pretty well the entire first half up til the end of the second performance. After that the movie became more focused on the plot of the cop, of which made no sense to me whatsoever, and what little music performances left were terrible. The film has a 88% fresh score on rottentomatoes so I tried reading some of the reviews to find out what the hell was going on plot wise in the last 40 odd minutes of the film but no critic even brings it up which befuddles me immensely. I'd say first 50 minutes - excellent
second 50 minutes - Dreadful

That's easy - the script and the humor. For my $, this is the best in this Marvel series. What really impressed me was Joss' ability to have 6 Avengers in a movie, still give all of them their own arc and stay true to their individual characteristics, and give all of them their "moment". There are a couple knocks I have on it - namely weak villain, and the aliens at the end were kinda lame as well. If you are a huge Iron Man fan, I could see not loving it. While he had his moments, it seemed like Stark was purposely toned down to allow for the others to get theirs too.'TexanFan02 said:

The Descendants - I really liked the story and think it was a well done film and is worth watching for sure. However I did have some trouble with the acting. I think Clooney has become typecast and if he isn't playing the uber-slick playboy it can be difficult to find him convincing. He wasn't bad, in fact I think he did a good job (not best actor good, but good) but I found that a lot of the time I actively noticed that I was watching Clooney play a type rather than be a type (does that make sense?).
The older daughter was also a weak point as she really wasn't a defined character, she was more like a place holder whose actions were dictated to fit whatever Clooney's character needed her to be. That description sounds like a girl just being a good daughter but we are introduced to her character as being a drinking and drug using incorrigible girl who had to be sent to boarding school. But IMO that theme was dropped and never really touched upon again.

Granted, I avoid watching superhero movies whenever I can, but don't most of them have humor interspersed throughout? I chuckled a few times in the movie, nothing really out of the ordinary for a superhero movie I thought. As for the script, I thought it went very fast over anything that was complicated, such as Iron Man/Captain America fixing the propeller, and it hit most of the superhero cliches which bored me greatly. Would have been nice to see some character die or something, cause really there was no drama during Iron Man's big space scene at the end knowing he wasn't going to die. I've been meaning to catch the Watchmen, but I completely agree the Avengers falls way short of meeting any of the Nolan Batman's as far as quality goes; reading the Avengers thread though that doesn't seem to be a uncommon thought.'KarmaPolice said:That's easy - the script and the humor. The AvengersI really liked this movie. Its the best of the Marvel brand and I was a really big fan of Iron Man (both, but esp. the first).A real roller coaster ride here. As in thrilling , not as in up and down. All the characters were fleshed out somewhat and true to the original Marvel characterizations. I laughed out loud a number of times. Ended up seeing this today and I liked it a lot. I thought Dafoe and the children were excellent, and the Aussie locals were all solid. I disagree with you in regard to both the story and the ending. I thought the story was great; it didn't tie all the knots together but it tied all the needed ones and a bit of ambiguity and mystery made for a better film (as it usually does imo). I also thought the ending was very well done, don't understand the dislike there. I'd give it a 4 or 4.5/5 myself, making it pretty comfortably in my top 10 films of 2011.
