Harold and Maude - In a desert island situation this movie would definitely make my top 5 comedy list and possibly make my top 5 overall films. It is so intelligently written and thoughtful that it holds up to scrutiny even after 40 years. I don't know much about the other films by the five actresses who were nominated for Oscars (except for Fonda in Klute, meh) but I am continually shocked that Ruth Gordon wasn't even nominated. She is brilliant in this role and at 75 years old she is positively radiant and brings so much energy and life to her role that even the hardest heart would have to be captivated by her. When contrasted against Bud Cort who capably portrays the goth archetype with a straight faced melancholy and a subtle humor I can't imagine anyone not being charmed by the brilliance of this classic dramedy.

And bonus points for the best movie car ever.

10 out of 1 stars.
it is usually flattering when someone compares you a movie actor. when i was in my high school years, i got a lot of "you look like the guy 'harold and maude'". i didn't see the film until later in college and i wasn't happy. now, in retrospect, i am rather okay with it.
Not a fan of this movie
It's pretty much overrated.

Moonrise Kingdom:

I am 50/50 on Wes Anderson so I thought I'd give it a shot, and I think I am just done trying. Beautifully shot and kinda 'cute' but overall I wasn't enjoying my experience. I think I liked it slightly better than his last two films, but that is not saying a lot.
Loved it
I never know what to expect going into a Wes Anderson film. It's really dependant on my mood but I generally like them, my favorite being Steve Zissou. I really liked Moonrise Kingdom. It was a bit uncomfortable at times though with the girl being just a kid. The story was very touching though.
Yeah, there's a scene with the kids in underwear, and I felt weird, too.
A little bit, but yes, overall the story was touching and funny. My favorite of his is still The Royal Tenenbaums. It's in my top 3 films.
The kissing scene was fine but having the girl wearing so much makeup basically the entire film, even in the tub, was a bit creepy.

Is anybody else having a problem with the white corner, or is it just me. Just me, right?
I just started a new thread about this in the Website Questions forum.
lol. I was making fun... this has been ongoing for a while, with ongoing posts about it.
I figured you were joking. I have seen comments on the issue but no solutions and Kool Aid Larry put the task of finding a solution on me and I take that responsibility with all the gravity it deserves.

Would also put Tenebaums in my top tier of favorites. I think Anderson's best work came when he had Owen Wilson as his co-writer. Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, and The Royal Tenebaums. I have yet to give Moonrise Kingdom a chance because his previous few movies fell a bit flat for me. If I didn't really care for Life Aquatic or Darjeeling, is this going to be my cup of tea?

Just watched The Proposition for the first time today (I know... I'm late to the game with this one).

Beautifully shot with striking violence. I thought the music was a bit odd for the style of the movie but somehow it worked.

Good movie. I describe it as, "fly-addled."

There was something about this movie that bugged me in HS when I first watched it. I think it was mostly that I watched it because a series of fairly culturally unintersting people seemed to love it, like it gave them some kind of street quirky cred or something. Or I'm drunk. But #### this movie.
I can see why this movie is iconic. But perhaps the context in which you see it in makes all the difference? Maybe I'd love it if I had seen it as a teen.
I've never seen it but I read the synopsis (as well as a bunch of spoilers) and it doesn't seem like a comedy to me. I'm going to give it a try but I'm keeping my expectations low based on what I've read.
I don't get the love for this movie either.

Watched about 45 minutes of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which I last saw in the theater back in 2005. Boy what a silly pile of crap that was.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adapation

After watching the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, three 11-12 year old boys decided to re-make the movie in and around their house. It took seven years to complete the shot-by-shot re-make. Seeing this adaptation brought back memories of youth and juvenile thinking and believing. That you could do anything. Its a wonderful film, absolutely loaded with ultra-cheesey special effects and unintentional humor. I really enjoyed it and recommend a watch if you can find a screening. The director and lead actor were at the screening and interviewed by Harry Knowles (of Ain't It Cool News). We stayed around for the the book signing and schmoozing which went on for a long time and included a late after party.

3.88/ 5 stars

Snow White and the Huntsman wasn't bad but just way too long. My wife fell asleep and I wound up fast-forwarding through much of the end. Should've cut out at least a half hour. Swearengen as a dwarf was funny though. Pretty amazing how they did that. Good effects and sound. Charlize impressive as usual. 2.5/5

Thumbsucker

I didn't know anything about this movie, and assumed it was a tiny indy film with a cast of unknowns. But the cast features Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Vince Vaughn, Benjamin Bratt, and Keanu Reeves. Not a great movie, but a good study of teen angst with some funny moments. The performances are all good - especially the lead performance by the young lead Lou Taylor Pucci.

I wouldn't bump it to the top of your queue, but it's worth a rental some time.

Watched a handful lately:

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World- Carell and Knightly live in a world that knows an asteroid is on the way to wipe out humanity. Some hang on to old routines and rituals for normalcy, others totally abandon all morals and laws to go out with a bang. Our hero's are forced to deal with the feeling that something is missing in their lives and try like hell to find it before the end. I really liked this one and it worked for me. 3.5/5

The Watch- Stiller, Vaughn, Hill, and some black english guy (who nearly stole the film). Neighborhood watched formed by Stiller to investigate a murder the local cops don't seem to care about. Aliens about to invade the planet. Hijinks ensue. Movie is kinda meh, plot is totally ridiculous, yet there were a handful of LOL moments that nearly make the flick decent. 2.5/5

That's My Boy- Sandler and Samburg. While I don't remember his specific age (believe it's 14 or 15), Sandler's character as a kid knocks up his teacher. Fast forward to now, Sandler is a bum who burned through his publicity money and now owes back taxes or will go to jail. Estranged from his son, he goes to him to try and talk him into doing a sleazy tv show on a jailhouse reunion with the mom/teacher to get the money to pay off the tax collector. Funniest Sandler movie since Happy Gilmore. Laughed my ### off. Hilarious bit of Rex Ryan as Sandler's lawyer going on about being a big Patriots/Brady/Belichick fan. 4/5

Men In Black 3- Lee Jones, Smith, and Brolin. Weird alien assassin goes back in time to remove Agent K from existence, since it was K who stopped him and his species from invading earth. Agent J goes back in time as well and works with a young Agent K to stop the assassin. Solid movie, nothing spectacular but it's a good effort in this MiB story line. Brolin does an excellent job of doing Tommy Lee Jones. 3.5/5

Sandler's movies are meant to be funny? I didn't realize. ;)

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I'm a little torn on this movie...on one hand I really enjoyed it for the acting and writing, but on the other I had a tough time believing these were high school students. Also, it was meant to take place in the 80's but the people in it didn't look like they were from the 80's at all. Some parts, like bullying kids, were cliche. Despite all this, I'm still going to give it 8/10 and in a weak year for movies it's probably going to be in my top 10.

Has anyone seen "Meeting Evil", with Samuel L Jackson and Luke Wilson? I added it to my Netflix que and might watch tonight with the g/f.

Any good?

Caught up on a few movies this weekend.

Goon - It took my brain a little while to adjust to Stiffler not playing the role of an egotistical hot-head, but once I got used to that I enjoyed it. It's not really a comedy, though it does have some pretty funny parts. 7/10

The Dark Knight Rises - I love the two previous Batman movies and pretty much every film that Nolan has ever done...until now. It just got too ridiculous in the semi-real world they'd built for this version of Batman. My biggest qualm though was the pacing. It moved so fast, almost like it was just jumping from the middle of one scene to the middle of another all movie long, kind of like the most recent season of True Blood. Along with that, while I love some good intense percussion music to set the mood, it pretty much played for the entire 3 hours consecutively in this movie. A good ending salvaged it somewhat, but this thing was a mess and a major disappointment. 4/10

Act of Valor - As I'm sure has been mentioned many times over, the acting by the seals held this one back some, but it was fairly enjoyable overall. I liked the occasional switch to a first person view. 6/10

I liked everything in this but Stiffler- and I usually like him. Seemed miscast here. Also didn't care about any love story in this- but I get that it's not much without it. Basically, it's Slapshot but not quite as good. Still loved the Russian dudes breaking the GKs balls and his reactions.

I'm just saying the movie is borderline terrible and most of the reviews in here seem to think it's an underrated gem. Stifler's performance is more handicapped then goonish.

Question:

I don't have kids, know nothing of kids movies. I am dating someone who has 3 kids, and one of the girls wants to see Monsters Inc in 3D, which comes out in a few weeks. Part of her B-Day present. We are taking all 3 kids. I didn't know this movie has been out for 10 years, and is only returning to the theatres because it's now in 3D. The kids have seen it numerous times already. Is it unfair to say it is a waste to take them since they've seen it a bunch of times already? Will the 3D experience make it THAT much better/different?

big-screen, as much or more than 3d, will make it different and better IMO.

Oh definitely touching. Kingdom is probably my favorite Anderson movie so far, followed by Bottle Rocket.

I think 3-D is more money for a product that isn't a lot better. I just avoid 3-D movies
