Ride Along

Meh. Typical cop buddy/partner comedy. Nothing new here. Comedy part was just ok, action was just ok. Not much to praise about, but not much to talk down on either.

2/5
is it better because of Ice Cube or Kevin Hart? i mean, we all know it is a vehicle for Hart but Cube is the more experienced actor. he's been in all of those "Are We There Yet" movies. He's done a few action movies like "XXX: State of Play" or whatever. I haven't made up my mind on Hart yet. Is he just another Chris Tucker? Cube might not be as good an actor as, say, Jackie Chan but he's a lot more believable in his roles.
The acting was fine. The writing sucked. I'm not really sure good acting can save an awefully written formuliac movie.

it really isn't worth arguing about best picture winners or nominations. (still fun to do it though). the academy likes a certain type of movie, usually only in one or two genres and usually always pretty safe movies with just a little splash of artiness.

people here are passionate and smart about movies and I bet all our combined list for the Oscars would look totally different.

somebody brought up 1997, which looking at a list my top movies, is evidently my favorite year for movies. 4 of my favorites are from that year, but weren't up for best pic: boogie nights, jackie brown, sweet hereafter, and the ice storm. besides l.a. confidential, I don't think any of the other movies nominated even come close to the quality of the four I listed; not to say they arent good movies.
The Full Monty was as good as those.

cute movie, but IMO nowhere in the same playing field as those 4 KP mentioned.

Damn those voiceovers. That aside, something with the characters didn't really get my interest up . Amy Adams was sexy as hell and I thought her and Bale did a great job. The J.Lawrence and Cooper acting nominations I don't get. For the most part I think I just felt the movie was spinning it's wheels and not getting anywhere. Loved some of the performances, but not the movie. 5.5/10
I've read plenty of negative reviews of Lawrence in this movie, and I just don't get it. She was hilarious.
I will be honest, I dont like her in general, so I think I have trouble with her movies. no real reason for it. same goes for Renner, so between them and the voiceovers, I was destined to not dig this movie.

(The FX Series)

Man, this is fantastic television. I was very skeptical when I heard that FX was adapting the film. But this isn't an adaptation, it's a re-imagining. Very good all around, and better than most TV you'll see this year.
There is a thread specifically for the TV show
Yeah. I like the series so much, I wanted to pimp it here.
If it was something else, I would have voiced my objection. But, I love it too, so I will allow it.

sorry... what? you didn't like Winter's Bone?

I think she's fantastic, if only for that. my brother and sil are both actors and say the work she's done in the hungry thing series is spectacular... and they are the pissy, nobody else is ever very good type of actors.

I loved her in winters bone and think she is sexy, but something rubs me the wrong way about her. seen a couple interviews with her and came away not liking her. no specific or rational reason for it.

she was amazing in Silver Linings Playbook also.

So a couple of months ago I got all happy about a site where you can stream just about any recent movie you want to.

I just spent 10 minutes browsing. Pretty much any movie that has come out in the last 2 years is available including stuff that is in the theaters right now.

Not one single film looked watchable. Sad.

Let's go through the list on the streaming site shall we?

1. "Godzilla" Not even sure what to say about this.

2. "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" Why?

3. "God's Not Dead" lolz

4. "Another Spiderman Circlejerk"

5. "Brick Mansions" Isn't that guy dead?

6. "Heaven is for Real" OH COME ON

7. "Captain America" F You

8. "Transcendence" Looks like it could have been good but crashed and burned

9. "Noah" Strayed to far from the book (ool)

10. "Devil's Due" Had to look this one up. Sounds neato.

Also looked up the top box office for this week...

--"Neighbors" I actually think this one might not be absolutely, 100% terrible. I should start smoking pot again.

--"Million Dollar Arm" Nice to see Hamm cashing in on his TV success. I'm sure we'll see him on Falcon Crest 2016

--"The Other Woman" If I was a single guy in my 20s I'd totally take the mildly special receptionist from work to see this on our first date. I bet I could touch her boob while she laughed like an idiot.

--"Rio 2" WTF is that?

--"Legend's of Oz" Are we really still beating this dead horse to death with another dead horse?

--"Mom's Night Out" Please tell me that this is a porno.

-- "The Grand Budapest Whatever" I'm sure this is totally different from every other Wes Anderson abortion.

Summary: I'd rather watch Jonah Hill do shrooms and then put a shoebox on his lap and do a puppetshow.

Couldn't have said it better myself, although I may have railed for a bit on sequels nobody asked for. Good work overall though. 4.5/5 stars.

The box office says different. This is mostly what people are asking for, because that is what they are paying to see. You just happen to disagree.

I know it's easy to bag on the movies coming out, but there are also a ton of indie movies or stuff that doesn't have a superhero in it that have been good in the last couple years, a lot of which I am sure have been reviewed in here.

Of course it all depends on what you like to watch. I gravitate towards docs (there are so many fantastic movies in this genre being made), and dramas so I always have a decent time finding something to watch on dvd. Original action movies are drying up, and that is dominated by sequels, reboots, and comic book movies. Comedy movies are hit and miss to me, but they have always been that way. These are dominated by a few people, so if you don't like W.Ferrell, M.McCarthy, S.Rogan, V.Vaughn and a couple others the comedies are a little harder to find, but even so there have been some under the radar ones that I have laughed at like: ACOD, Drinking Buddies, The To Do List. Horror movies have also been harder for me to like lately - again a genre dominated by reboots, sequels, and remakes of foreign movies. There have been some I have liked such as Sinister and The Conjuring.

Movies are #####. TV is where the good stories are being told.
I agree to a point, but it's not a fair comparison. Telling a story over a 10hr + season is a lot easier than doing it in a 2 hour movie. Of course they can have more characters and develop them all to their leisure.

We are in a great era for TV, and it seems to only be getting better. More money than ever is being thrown into these shows, and now a lot of actors are jumping into these series, because like you pointed out, there are a lot of different things you can do with the shows you can't do on the big screen. A lot of bigger directors are jumping to TV shows too.

I went from hardly watching a TV maybe 3 years ago and mostly just watching movies to being addicted to waaayyy too many shows: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story, Misfits, Homeland, Orphan Black, and I am sure a few others that I am forgetting.

Part of it is quality of the shows, and part of it is time. As my son gets older and busier I have less time and am more tired. I am more likely to watch an episode or two of a show at night to unwind than I am to pop in a movie (doesn't help that the trend in movies I want to watch seems to be to push the 2 1/2 hour boundary)

Chef - Really the movie should have been rated NC-17 or X because it is pron. Food Pron, but pron never the less. ScarJo has an orgasm when Jon Favreau makes her a pasta dish that I probably would have slept with him to try it.

But the first half is bad. Depressing, not funny, didn't care for the characters. But once they got the food truck, completely different movie.

And I still do not buy that Jon Favreau got Sophia Vergara not once, but twice

Wait...wat

Watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Entertaining. Not Oscar material but a fun watch. The 10 year old granddaughter enjoyed it as well.

Other than Game of Thrones, which ends for the season in a few weeks, the list of top watched TV shows isn't any more exciting than the list of top movies.

There are still lots of good movies out there. Lots of good stories, lots of good acting, lots of good directing. Like with TV shows, you're probably not going to find them by looking through the top of the "most watched" list. For both TV and movies that's mostly made up of stuff where the mainstream watcher can shut their brain off for an hour or two.

Yeah, I'm aware how it works. With movies, music, and TV you'll always have to dig a little for the good stuff. But I've been failing to enjoy even the "good" movies for quite some time, while finding excellent TV series all over the place.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Cool movie. A bit silly, but some excellent action sequences.

------

Frozen

Rented this garbage for my son, wasn't aware this would only be interesting to 10 year old girls. If you want to know how far Disney has fallen, there's a line in this movie wherein a character talks about picking your nose and eating it. Dude.

Okay PPV movie tonight:

Delivery--The Beast Within. Very creative take on the POV/Paranormal type movies. Loved the way this movie was filmed--a movie within a movie. Kind of a Rosemary's Baby vibe. Just saying you probably will not see the ending coming and when it gets there, do not look away for a second.

Liked it a lot!!

Also saw the Devils Due a couple nights ago. Same exact idea, but just not as creative and a little more stretch of the imagination needed there.

This is why my cable bill is so high--all these PPV movies.

Everything sucks.
Home alone and sat down for a movie tonight....ended up watching 3 eps of S1 of Breaking Bad for the second time this week.
I was on a long flight and had a huge selection of in-flight movies to choose from. I decided to watch the final 3 episodes of Breaking Bad again instead.

I did watch Sole Survivor on the way back which wasn't bad.

Neighbors - meh
First review I've heard like this. Every body I've heard says it's pretty good.
I laughed a few times, but the chemistry between Rogen and his wife I didn't think was very good. Dialogue seemed forced to me. I was disappointed overall.

ETA: also, the idea of a frat house in the middle of suburbia and only one neighbor has a problem with loud, drunken toga parties at 2am seemed a little stupid.

Neighbors - good summer comedy

Godzilla - not enough Godzilla

X-Men - convoluted plot but still pretty damn good

I'm looking forward to Maleficent

I was really disappointed with Out of the Furnace.

Great cast. Acting holds up. The first act seems like a solid setup, but then the story just deteriorates into nonsense. No real depth. No redemption. No point really.

Yeah, I think every review has been similar to yours.

I just don't get why Woody did what he did. He had a money maker on his hands.

Absolutely agree. I also thought this was one of Woody's weaker performances. He just had a scowl on his face the whole movie, and that's it. That was the depth of his character.

Finally watched The Machinist

It's a one and done type movie. I don't see myself watching it again, weird but entertaining. Bale was tough to look at physically, it was important to the story though so it worked.

Just saw a Tarantino double feature this week: True Romance and Reservoir Dogs.

Both are good movies, although Dogs is not nearly as entertaining on the big screen as Romance.
Got True Romance from Netflix since there's nothing else out. Only saw it once when it first came out. Neither of us remember much from it. I do remember liking it a lot though.

Thanks for the reminder.
