40 mins into The Monuments Men

Sweet fancy Moses is this stupid. Does it get any better?
Funny. I just finished watching it as well. Could have been much better. Happy I didn't go to a theater to see it.
Shame. Should have been Is a good story to tell.
*fixed and yea, I agree..

I enjoyed parts of it, probably 2.5 out of 5 starts.. but with the actors in it, and the story to that could be told it did disappoint.

Was really hoping, based on the commercials, for a "Kelly's Heroes" type of Movie and there were some funny moments.. But just seemed the director couldn't decide how he wanted to tell the story and thus it was underwhelming. :kicksrock:
That's a good synopsis. Matt Damon in France by himself was a waste of time. That shold have happened quicker. Breaking the team up also left a lot to be desired because the point of that cast, I thought, was to have them interact with each other more. There was also no character developement. The scene with Bill Murray listening to the song on the record should have been a lot more powerful except that there was no backstory on him at all and why it would matter any more than any other soldier in the war.

The scene where Clooney and the kid from New York brought the wounded soldier in was also dying for some backstory or at least a scene of setup and we got nothing. The director clearly wanted to show that these guys were real soldiers dealing with real soldier things but he ended up doing a piss poor job at it. Same thing with the dead Englishman. We get it, he redeemed himself. But he wasn't in it enough to care why.

The start had a feel like it was going to be Oceans 14 and I was worried about that, so at least it wasn't that. But it could have been so much more. It's a fascinating story. Hell even the Russian part of it was ridiculously undertold - it was just there to set up them running out of the final mine - which we never actually get to see. Just a lot of tension and drama with no set up or proper payoff. Eh, not every movie can be 5 stars, amiright?
I paid to see this in the theatre after anticipating it for months and was very disappointed.

It is indeed such a GREAT story and this movie was IMHO a one half star. That bad.

I think Clooney wanted a current day "Bridge Too Far" type star filled action war movie - and it was just poorly produced, poorly written, and poorly everything else.
When I look back it almost feels like there were three different writers writing.. One for comedy, one for drama, and one for historical aspects and none of them got in the same room to collaborate. Felt like the director took all 3 parts of the story and just mashed them together.

The To-Do List:

Continuing on the trend of movies that seem to be saying "the ladies can be that raunchy too" such as Bridesmaids and The Heat here we have the HS losing your virginity movie from the girls' side. Love Aubrey Plaza, so I had to check it out, and she plays the nerdy teen well. It REALLY pushes the envelope with gross out gags and language, and it is fun seeing the women talk so frankly about a topic that is usually reserved for the horny guys. I laughed a bit, but having seen so many of these movies, it didn't feel like anything new besides the woman angle so it did get a little stale. 5.5/10 I know this one will make many parents very uncomfortable.
Maybe I am easily amused tonight or something but I laughing at this movie nonstop. Aubrey Plaza is my kind of humor so maybe that is it. Yeah, its a dumb movie but it is funny.

That's exactly how it felt to me.

We've been watching a miniseries on Netflix (not sure where it aired originally) called The Fall, with Gillian Anderson- serial killer/police-procedural set in Belfast (where there's apparently a crap-ton of murders). Not bad, but a little... naive, maybe- showing and lingering on a lot of the procedural stuff as if the audience has never seen it before- guess what, we've seen CSI ad nauseum... refocus on the characters, which are all pretty decent. Lady X Files plays one of those all-knowing, instincts always right characters... almost like the chick from the Bridge, but without being so implausibly impossible of a human being. There are 5 episodes... 4 in and I think it's worth a watch. I'll see how the payoff is for the finale.

Loved the Fall and can't wait for season two. I was a bit disappointed in the finale, even though it was very good. I won't give anything away.

I thought The Fall was some of the best television I've seen in years. Really tense moments throughout. I kept thinking this is what it must be like in real life whenever they showed the antagonist plying his trade. Creepy. Gillian Anderson nails her role and the gender twist to her characters m.o. adds to the feel of the show.

I will say the main subplot is kind of a dud for me so that detracts some from the show but overall it's a good watch. Highly recommend.

Here is a trailer (teaser) for Season 2. Can't wait!

My son introduced me to The Room last night. He is also the one who first showed me Rebecca Black's Friday.

But The Room is awful Awful AWful AWFUL! Incredibly bad acting, scenes jump from here to there, it is pointless.

But you need to see it at least once. So bad it's good

An Unlikely Weapon

Story of Pulitzer Prize Prize winning photographer Eddie Adams. He is well known for so many photographs, but perhaps most well known for the infamous execution of a Viet Cong soldier on a street in Saigon in1968. A very intense film IMO and well made. 4/5

Extremely excited about this. Wanted to reiterate that fans of The Fall should check out the HBO miniseries Five Days. Very much the same tone and quality

Cool, thx! Never heard of it.

Is it on HBOGo?

I'm 2 episodes into Orphan Black. Good so far, hope it gets better.

I'm almost certain that it is, but I haven't yet verified.

Orphan Black gets a little better- the actress is phenomenal straight through, and the writers find their stride, comedy-wise, pretty soon. It's not great, but it's a fun watch.

I thought I was 4 in, but it appears what I thought was the penultimate episode was actually the final. Good stuff, but definitely more of a setup for the next season than any kind of wrap-up.

Yeah, that's what I was disappointed with. I would rather they wrapped it up.

Local Art theater decided to show, for it's 50th anniversary, A Hard Day's Night.

Such a fun movie and the theater just upgraded the sound system. Theater was packed, everybody was singing along. Great way to spend a hot saturday afternoon

Incendies

I'd recommend this to anyone who likes foreign films. It's low budget but nicely put together with a solid soundtrack. The basic premise are a brother and sister digging into their family history at their mother's dying wish. What they uncover is pretty shocking.

It took me a while to get into it and to see where they were trying to go with it but the payoff is worth it. The second half packs a heavy punch. There were a few jaw dropping moments for me.

Watched it on youtube with subtitles.

He's very fussy about his drums. They loom large in his legend.

Lone Survivor

Didn't see it mentioned in the last couple of pages. I was pleasantly surprised. Not fantastic but felt a lot like Black Hawk Down. Pretty intense and kept me interested all the way through. I'm not really a fan of long action sequences but the lengthy battle brought out the hopelessness in war. The fact that Explosions in the Sky did the soundtrack certainly didn't hurt. I'm a sucker for those guys.

I'm watching Shaolin Soccer with my son. I don't know if it's the best kung fu soccer movie ever made, but it's definitely top 10.

Thanks for the rec. on The Way Way Back. Not that it was great but it was an enjoyable watch. My only complaint being that the kid seemed a little too withdrawn to come out of his shell that quickly. They should have toned it down a little in the beginning.

Blood Ties- 8.5/10

Movie about organized crime set in 1974 Brooklyn. If you take out a couple of scenes that seemed out of place, it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long while. I think Clive Owen is very underrated.

Highly recommend.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The human characters were largely underdeveloped, I thought. With the exception of Gary Oldman as Dreyfus they were all very forgettable. The story is extremely predictable but that was unavoidable. Despite the flaws I thought it was pretty solid. Good action and great special effects. If you enjoyed Rise you'll like this one.

Despite some flaws, I think the complex ape society portrayed and some of the action scenes make this worth seeing.

I had never seen Ken Burns Civil War documentary. Similarly to his Jazz series, I put it off for a long time because of the investment of time, but was just as enthralled and once I got started couldn't wait to see the rest of the episodes. It piqued my interest enough to check out the supposedly definitive one volume history, Battle Cry of Freedom, and possibly later Shelby Foote's monumental trilogy (he was the primary commentator in the doc).

Also, True Detective blew my mind. I don't have perspective on it yet, but it is one of the better dramatic shows of its kind I've seen since The Wire and Breaking Bad. The atmosphere, acting, writing, well drawn characters, creepy, underscore and unsettling sound design, intricate plot and initially measured and tempered pacing building to a freight train climax were all outstanding, it was like a more layered, 8 hour feature film. The only way I can describe it is creating a new genre of existential, police procedural, horror, buddy cop anthology of which it is the sole example.

Without any spoilers, the way the flashback structure was interwoven, with events from the past increasingly colliding with the present, and the clues doled out judiciously as the narrative hurtled towards its culmination was brilliant and masterful. I think the director mentioned being a fan of how David Lynch built the suspense in Twin Peaks (which was pretty intense for its time, before it jumped the shark - somewhat like McConaughey, Kyle MacLachlan was also given an almost at times Martian, Bodhisattva-like detached manner, bearing, demeanor and outsider perspective in his life observation and commentary dialogue from Lynch). I had seen the reviews that said it was some of McConaughey and Harrelson's best work and agree. I had never heard nihilistic dialogue like what was given McConaughey before, it was kind of like the game changer the dialogue Tarantino gave to Travolta and Jackson in Pulp Fiction represented (not due to the content, which is dissimilar, but in upping the ante from anything I'd heard before, hitmen hadn't talked like that in movies previously - even though it sometimes drew attention to itself as self-consciously stylized, it had its own rhythm that was compelling).

Harrelson was the perfect uncomplicated, homespun, care free, happy go lucky, good old boy foil to interact with McConaughey's cool, collected but driven, obssessed, dark, brooding, deep thinker. After MM talks about how humans are sentient meat, WH asks offscreen in a seguway to another scene, what was that about scented meat? :)

Funny people bringing up Shaolin Soccer. Loved that movie and the other one of that director's I saw, Kung Fu Hustle, so I watched his newest one last night: Journey to the West. Bonkers in the best possible way. Loved it, and I would tell people that liked his other movies to check it out.

Also agree with an above poster about The Raid 2. Ran a bit long and not as good as the first one, but still well worth the watch if you are a fan of The Raid: Redemption. Was poking around imdb, and it looks like there is a Raid 3 in the works :excited: , and an American remake in the works :wall: I thought Dredd was already a close enough remake.

Also watched Blue Ruin. Heard about this on one of the podcasts that I listen to. Really liked this one. Won't say much about about this except that it is a gritty, realistic take on a revenge movie. Essentially, what might happen if Joe Blow like us wanted to get back at somebody instead of somebody like Liam Neeson who is trained and can take out 50 bad guys. Starts off a tad slow, but I think there are many in here that would like this one too.

I think I am still processing Under the Skin.

This just came out on Criterion Blu Ray a few weeks ago. I assume it got a restoration job, it was at the TCM Film Festival earlier this year, where I saw Billy Friedkin's CRIMINALLY underrated masterpiece, Sorceror.

All Criterion 50% off at Barnes and Noble through July. Also had to get Cronenberg's cult classic sci fi horror Scanners, which came out last Tuesday.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - 7/10

If you like dialog driven drama, then this is the movie for you. I think I'm too spoiled from watching things like the Bourne and newer Bond

movies.

Richard Burton is good in it though.
Watched this in college and loved it. It's based on a John le carre novel.
Has to be one of the most deglamorized depictions of espionage I've seen. Agreed, good performance and movie.

If you like mysteries, old films, and subtitles, I highly recommend Les Diaboliques.
Horror classic.

Hitchcock wanted to direct it, but the story was sniped by Clouzot (not Inspector :) ), who also did the excellent Wages of Fear. The writing collaborators, who worked as a team, wrote the source material for Hitchcock's next project, arguably his greatest, Vertigo. They also adapted a novel for another French horror entry, Eyes Without A Face, also recommended (two other movies about faces, plastic surgery and the nature of identity are the more horror leaning Seconds by Frankenheimer and the existential Face Of Another by Teshigahara).

I can't pimp this movie enough. My favorite movie in a while.

Thanks for posting this....I watched the complete 5 episode first season last week at my desk while working on mundane reports.

Really enjoyed it. I was apprehensive about the Gillian Anderson role, but she was really one cool customer.

Very good.

The Internship is awful. Cliche, stupid, not very funny at all. The "on the line" joke would have been outdated and forced in 2004 let alone 2014.

felt like a cynical, sqeeze a buck out of the vince and wilson brother, phone-it-in across the board vehicle. terrible, terrible movie.

oh hey, speaking of drek... we saw Taken 2. My favorite part- the daughter chucking grenades from the rooftops randomly in a dense, medieval urban center to let her dad know where she was... don't mind those explosions everbody, we're playing pool-time Marco Polo over here. Not good.

So question for wolf on wall st.

John ah hill give him up? If so why only 3 years?

also explain how they were actually making money? We're they investing any of it? I mean I get the scam but if you get a 10k invested but only 50 is invested seems like it would have been caught sooner

They got paid off of broker commissions that they made by selling crappy ### penny stocks with false promises of riches for their customers.

Both True Detective and this new Fargo miniseries were better than most films I watch. I don't know if I can pay them any higher of a compliment.

Just watched it last night. Very good action sequences, and the sound was absolutely amazing. The scene with the American leaning up against a tree and the shots being fired at him....damn that was chilling.
