Draft Day

Boy was that bad. From the bad dialogue to establish historical context to Costner's inability to show any emotional range whatsoever to the horrible core plot this was an all around fail. If this had the energy, dialogue and believability of the 10 minutes deal making scene in Money Ball this would have been an entertaining movie. As it is, this is a giant steaming pile.

he's a decent comic actor. Tin Cup and Bull Durham are evidence of that. i sort of feel like he's been sleepwalking through his roles mostly for a few years now.

Really funny in parts, head scratching in others. Kevin Spacey Christoph Waltz were a waste. Jennifer Aniston was filthier than in the first movie and Jamie Foxx was good.

The outtakes were the best part.

Jason Sudeikis got some great one liners in the outtakes.

Both jason's (Sudeikis and Bateman) are hiding in the bushes.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

Didn't like it as much as the first, but still worth the watch. Koba was every bit as good as Ceasar, and was laughing at the scene with him and the 2 guys in the warehouse. Just like the first one, I thought they did an amazing job with the closeup/facial aspect of the apes, but thought it looked bad when it was a wider shot with them fighting. 6/10

Tammy:

Hated this movie. I think I am just better off avoiding McCarthy's work altogether going forward. Not sure I would even recommend this one to people who usually find her funny. 3/10.

It's A Wonderful Life:

Yes, it was the first time I had ever seen it. What a fantastic movie. Besides the silly talking stars, I thought everything about the movie was great. I think took me by surprise since I was expecting silly, sappy Christmas movie. It was darker than I thought, but at the same time, had everything else - laughs, great romantic scenes, etc.. Glad I finally put this one in. 9/10

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest:

Another great movie. Had seen it before, but it had been years and years. Had forgotten how many great side characters and actors there are in this movie. I think the boat scene is the only thing that drags the movie down a point from being a 10. Also, I found Nurse Ratched to be arousing this time around. Not sure what that was about. 9/10

Also, I powered though the final 4 episodes of Six Feet Under a couple weeks ago. Don't think I have cried that hard watching something before, and don't think I have seen a better or more fitting ending to a series than what they were able to do with this show. Loved the show, although my hatred for the Chenowith's ran pretty deep.

Good point. I don't think there is a show I have loved so much where there is barely a character on the show that I liked.

Hmmmm... I prefer Once upon a Time in the West to this one (Cardinale ), and neither are near my top 10.

i'll give credit to cardinale: she's way hotter than van cleef. "Once..." is a much more ambitious film, i think, while GBU is a lot more fun. Wallach's Tuco is priceless and the role of a lifetime.

Anybody watching The 100?

It's got some brutally bad Hunger Games/ Gossip girlish teenage nonsense at the center of the plot- but the rest is like they mashed up BSG (with some of the same actors- and likely same production designers- it looks great), The Postman and Mad Max (minus the cars). Part way into season 2 and I ####### love it, in spite of lots of cringey stuff. If you're into the whole post-apocalyptic thing, with a WTF is really going on subtext- you'll like this.

I watched the first 2 episodes, and was whelmed for the most part. There were some intriguing parts but I had trouble with the teenage angst in space. Will try again

Syriana. I feel like with this cast this movie could have been soooo much better. But I liked it. I'm kinda tired of the "oil companies" are always the real evil behind everything storyline, but there is some smoke to that fire for sure.

I have watched this more than once. I think you pick up a lot more of the details in a second viewing. Solid B for me.

I'm not sure how I'd make this movie better. One of the smartest thrillers I've ever seen.

Starship Troopers - Isn't this one that a lot of people rave about? I mean, it wasn't bad. I nearly turned it off midway through but am glad I stuck with it. Denise Richards is just so damn cute. I wish she was in the shower scene. 2.5/5

Here's the thing, go back and rewatch it as a parody of the US response to 9/11. Suddenly it's subversive genius.

Yes. Or just watch it as a parody of old WW2 films, and it's effective satire.

i don't have much love for the genre either. it doesn't feel like a Western to me though. it's far too rich a tale, especially compared to other spaghetti westerns and the hollywood staple that preceded it. it's really the Tuco and Blondie show as far as I'm concerned. That essential ingredient is what's missing in the other Leone films, imo.

Extra gold stars for this one due to New Order ripping off the guitar riff played during the cemetery scene for the bass line in Blue Monday. I played the heck out of Blue Monday long before I saw The Good The Bad And The Ugly and was blown away by the soundtrack when that scene happened.

It's a beautiful movie, and this is the highest complement I can pay it: it's a movie for adults. How many movies are there for grown ups each year? Like 5% to 10% of movies are written and performed this well.

*sigh* Just not for me. I guess I like my superhero movies more on the dark/grounded side - Batman, Cap 2, etc.. Nothing new for a comic book movie - get together, learn the baddie has a mystical object, fight baddie - just with weirder characters and a more fun tone. I did like the first 15 or so mins of it, then just found myself getting bored, then there was a time in the middle I thought the humor hit a little better and I came around on the movie again. That didn't last too long, and I found myself getting antsy again. Felt like a mash up of Fifth Element and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or something (I do like one of those movies). I would put this one above the Thor movies in the Marvel universe, but I think I have liked everything else better in the new wave Marvel movies. 5/10

fair enough.

I think what makes me nervous is that looking at the slate of Marvel movies it seems they are ramping up to the more galactic/mystical so i am not sure how much i will enjoy the next wave.

I see Jake Gyllenhaal's character as part Tony Robbins, part Sheldon Cooper, part Hannibal Lecter and part Peter Sellers in Being There.

Amazing performance and I hated him, with a passion.

And that is one of the best car chases I have seen in a while. Kept me riveted. Well worth the watch

Nightcrawler:

####in' wow. Not that I have seen a ton, but it vaults to the top of my favorite movies of the year. Jake was fantastically sleazy/scary as ####. I had a slight issue with the last couple scenes, but other than that it was great. Movie looked amazing, was tense all the way through, and the performance by Gyllenhaal was brilliant. Even more of a bonus for letting me get my Bill Paxton fix. 8.5/10
