I've seen a few lately....

The best of the bunch was Broken Flowers and I'll be the first to admit this movie is not for everybody. If you're expecting the Bill Murray from Stripes or Caddyshack you won't like this. If you liked him in Rushmore and can handle him playing a much more subdued role, then you're going to like this movie. It's a brilliant performance from him and the movie leaves you guessing, wondering and sympathising with Murray's character the entire way.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit and laughed a few times even though this is far from a comedy in the textbook sense. Supporting roles are rich and engergizing and the ending wasn't anything Hollywood would typically write in to appease the masses.

Very well done, I highly recommend this movie to those who can take their time with a film, enjoy pregnant pauses where we're allowed to ponder with the lead and, most importantly, can admire the evolution of Bill Murray as a tremendous all around actor.

 to Broken Flowers

p.s. There is a fantastic nude scene with a barely legal girl, bush and all.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" down?  I thougt Crouching Tiger was brilliant, and gets a lot of undue criticism.  It is a beautiful film to watch visually, beautiful music, it's what I want out of a movie.  You kind of drift in and out of a dream while watching it.  The story is good and the acting I thought was outstanding, esepcially by the two female leads.
I LOVE Crouching Tiger. Poetry.
I thought Crouching Tiger was good, but way overrated.A better film in the same genre was Hero.

I totally disagree with that. I thought Hero was ok, but a much worse movie than Crouching Tiger. Crouching Tiger was a so much better story and the whole thing just flowed wonderfully. It was artistically great.

Also rented North Country a couple of weeks ago and I don't understand why everybody was dogging Charlize Theron for not looking hot in this film. I thought she was smoking hot playing a low rent single mother of two. Maybe I like my women a bit on the trashy side, but there was NOTHING wrong with her in this movie at all. Sure she wasn't dolled up or wearing 10 pounds of make up. But I dare you to find a lady in Hollywood who can look better playing the part of a coal miner than Theron did.

The movie was a bit predictable, but that's not to say it was bad. I really enjoyed her character and thought she did a wonderful job portraying a role of a money starved woman who just wants to do right by her kids, even if that means going through the gauntlet at work. I didn't care much for the court scene drama, but I did like the transformation of her father (played by Six Feet Under's Richard Jenkins) who had to come full circle as a dad who was adamantly against his daughter joining his line of work to one who backed her when nobody else would.

Woody Harrelson, Frances McDormand and Sissy Spacek round out a damn good cast, but I think the best scene of the movie is shared between Theron's son and McDomarnd's husband towards the end. There's a lot going on in this movie - it isn't just about a woman being sexually harassed a male dominated field.

Whoknew knows. I own both of these movies and much prefer Crouching Tiger. Crouching Tiger>>House of Flying Daggers>Hero

(But all three are very good and I re-watchable)

Watched a movie called "The Ice Storm" last night, terrible
you have got to be kidding me....that's in my all time top 25 list for life. how could you not like that?
I just don't get it with this one
Well, it may be that the movie isn't for everybody. IMO, I thought the acting, given that it was an all star cast, was sensational. I found the writing to be sharp and the drama to be intense all the way around. It was interesting to see how the dynamic of a messed up parental relationship spilled over into the relationship sought out by their children and how the parents, in the end, had take ownership of their mistakes. Of course, I've seen this movie 10 times, so I might have caught a few more things than those who view it once and mentally discard it.

It's definitely on my all time top 100. Very good film.

Absolutely. In the genre, I think Iron Monkey was a lot better than Hero. I think Hero has some laughably bad dialogue and acting. Crouching Tiger is a much better film, IMO.

Now, Hero with Dustin Hoffman -- that was FUNNY.

I would say it's Hero>>House of Flying Daggers>>Crouching Tiger, but I agree that all 3 are real good.Edited to add - In my opinion, the swirling leaves fight between the two women in Hero, might just be the most beautifully filmed scene in any movie I have ever seen.

Dust To Glory a documentary about racing in the Baja 500. Very well done and I am not a racing fan. Moral of the story, “Never offer the keys to your off-road vehicle to Mario Andretti”

Went old school and saw two movies from my youth:

The Pirate Movie (someone here reminded me of it).. Doesn't hold up at all.....but I laughed at some of the Pirate Kings witty banter....

Class of 1984 .... I remember seeing this on television when I was little and I didn't realize how much they cut out of it. It has a cult following and is in the vein of The Warriors, Clockwork Orange and some of the Chuck Bronson vigilante movies. It's pretty good though......

Jamny, skip Madagascar if you don't have kids. Not that good.
really?I like animals in toons. It's the Central Park zoo right? I live in NY so I thought that might help.

I liked both Shreks, Shark Tales, Antz and Ice Age

Didn't like Monsters Inc. or Incredibles.

Hey - I saw Crash last night and I have a question. Was it ever determined who was responsible for ransacking the middle eastern man's store?

Just watched Broken Flowers.

sort of a spoiler:

Very strange. While at first I was a bit disturbed by the lack of an ending, it really didn't bother me in my evaluation of the film. I'm a huge Murray fan and he was great in it. I didn't come away with a feeling like I was cheated or anything. I am a bit confused if I'm missing something though.

Just watched "Stay" last night. It comes out on Turesday. I thought that it was a pretty decent/original movie. It had Naomi Watts, young Obi-Wan, and the dude from The Notebook. Don't want to give too much up, but if you like flicks like: The Jacket, The Machinist, etc. you might want to pick it up. And NO- she doesn't get naked... :D

Just saw Thank You for Smoking last night. Easily the best movie of the year so far. Probably one of the wittiest movies I've ever seen. Aaron Eckhart as a tobacco lobbyist...priceless. Haven't laughed that hard at a movie in quite some time.

Saw "Junebug" on Friday. Outstanding performance by Amy Adams (Jim's redhead GF from the American version of "The Office). Was also funny to see Ben McKenzie from "The O.C." as kind of a redneck.

I liked it a lot. A pretty touching story, though it's the kind of story that's been done a lot before (guy is kind of ashamed of his roots, until he goes back.

 Not a movie for those who don't like a lot of dialogue, but I liked it a lot. Very well photographed, with plenty of subtext.

40 Year Old Virgin.

Pretty good, obviously pretty funny but I was a bit disappointed. I think after seeing the trailer and hearing some of the reviews I had my expectations set a little high. Definately some great scenes and even some great subtle humor to go along with the completely in your face humor. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Capote-   I always like movies that take you back a little in time. Got a little boring at times, but overall a good film. The hanging at the end was the icing on the cake.

Saw Good Night and Good Luck and it was surprisingly very average.

With all the hype I expected better. My wife described it as a long cigarette commercial, which isn't far off.

Saw Kwaidan last night and although I thought the photography was excellent I didn't like it very much and turned it off after watching 80% of it.

Saw two big-name movies this weekend...

Team America World Police: Some really funny scenes, but dragged out a little too long. Overmade most of their points. Still, I was entertained.

Master And Commander: Meh. It was interesting, but I also thought a lot of the middle stuff kind of dragged. The doctor's story didn't interest me, and it seemed like that was half the movie.

Great photography. I think The Insider was a better film in a similar genre.

Big Fish

Great cast, superb acting and striking visually (what else do you expect from Tim Burton). Sad, but uplifting at the same time.
edit: sorry for the multiple posts...errors from the system even though the post went through

I cannot wait to see this movie. I watched the Ebert/Roeper reviews on it and they loved it. I might have to actually go see this in the theater.

Thanks! Pays to look at the buttons once in a while :D Also saw The Ladykillers

Some good scenes, but dragged in spots. Overall, a 'meh' rating.

The worst part of the movie was I had to go to the bathroom in the middle of it. Went out to Evanston to see this movie, and beforehand I ate buffalo wings at Buffalo Joe's. The 9 30 showing was sold out (since it was one of the few theaters showing it), so I decided to have a beer at the bar...flash forward to me in a sold out theater smack dab in the middle of the row. I've got beads of sweat forming across my face and my gf's telling me how good these trailers are. Meanwhile I've got this frozen look on my face trying to invent any form of meditation that will alleviate the liquid fire chortling in my stomach. Couldn't take it anymore so I had to walk hunched over through all these ppl stumbling and tripping...and then I had to do a little jog out to the bathroom in front a movie that just let out. So of course the bathroom's packed, and the first two stalls have broken locks. But luckily I found one and did my business...felt bad for the ppl in the bathroom, since I treated them to a symphony of sounds and malicious odors. At least I didn't go in my pants. And apparently I didn't miss anything funny according to my gf.

Walk The Line - Why did Witherspoon get so much attention and Phoenix none?
Thought the movie was good as well. I didn't know much about Johnny Cash before this besides his music so the storyline was interesting. I agree that Phoenix should have received more props. He didn't sound exactly like Cash but it was very good IMO. Witherspoon didn't do too much if you ask me. Sure her singing of the Carter tunes was solid, but beyond that I didn't think it was an Oscar worthy performance. Not sure who she was up against. Was it a weak field?

Watched "Capote" last night. Pretty good. I found it pretty amazing that he was allowed to visit with the prisoners so freely. Hoffman did a really good job capturing Capote's inner conflict as he was horrified by the crime, but connected with the killer. All in all, worth the time sitting on my #### in front of the TV.

I also just saw this movie. I did expect a lot more than what was involved. It wasn't a bad movie by any means. I did enjoy it. Just thought it was gonna knock some socks off.

I saw Corpse Bride the other day. I thought it was well done visually but there wasn't much substance to the story. I'm not a real big fan of musicals as I tend to think that most of them rely on the musical numbers to pad the running time. The fact that Corpse Bride had several and still came in under an hour and a half shows that the source material was stretched thin. Comparing it with Nightmare Before Christmas, I thought Corpse Bride was wittier, but Nightmare was the superior movie. I didn't think this was for children in the way that the Pixar and Disney movies are.... and I hope Burton ( who I still think is an excellent idea man and director) still has the loyal fan base that makes doing these movies profitable.

Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire

 All the Potter movies have been overrated and, from my perspective, downright disappointing.
I watched it last night and must admit I wasn't that impressed either. But, it was nice in 5.1 on the Bose  I guess I needed to really know what was going on in the land of Hogwarts, I have only seen parts of the originals.

Tonight...

I think the problem they face is one of how you put such a large book into two hours of movie. They seem to be going with the "capture the spirit of the work" route where it gives those that have read the books something to look at. The rest of us are left to wonder WTF is going on.

I was sick on the couch most of the weekend, so I got some movie watching done.

Downfall  - The story of how things played out in Hitler's bunker at the end of WWII. Very compelling. The actor who played Hitler was superb. The whole Nazi thing can be explained thusly: What if an insane asylum were given the keys to the government of an industrial power? Yikes.
Fascinating movie, wasn't it? Weren't those Goebbels parents freaky?
No joke. "I'd rather kill my FIVE children than have them live in a world without National Socialism." The vision of Hitler was and is astounding in it's wickedness. And the fact that he nearly pulled it off with 1940's technology is even more unbelievable.
Just saw this last nite. Great summary above. Very accurately portrayed (what I can just assume was) the hopelessness of things for Germany at the end of WWII. I thought it dragged on a bit, but still an interesting watch, especially if you have any interest in that era. The scene with the kids toward the end was quite disturbing. And I dunno, hearing them say "Uncle Hitler" gave me a chuckle for some sick reason.
