Freedomland: We wondered why this came and went from the theaters so fast. YUGH! Kept wondering what the hell the point of the movie was. While watching, I figured the plot HAD to be an allegory for something else, as it couldn't possibly be as bad as what we were watching. Nope... it was that bad.

Just saw Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I'm not a fan of the title, but great movie. Tommy Lee Jones did pretty well directing and starring this movie. Takes place in Texas. You get a closer look at the relationships between the illegals, the cowboys, and the border police. I highly recommend it.

Next up on my Netflix queue - Midnight Run with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin. Haven't seen it in a while, so I've forgotten most of it.

I really enjoyed Three Burials. I also enjoyed that hottie that played the cop's wife.

And Midnight Run is one of my all time favorites.

You have good taste in movies Mr. Smith.

I wante to see Tristram... but not my wife's cup of tea. Hooray beer, hooray Netflix.Was really and happily suprised by "24 hour Party People" when I saw it. Grew up listening to and loving Factory records- especially Joy Division, and thought I'd just be getting some nice memories of the music. But it was a very well made film on top of it- good use of breaking down the movie/audience wall, and very well acted.

Midnight Run has been on Cinemax lately. If you get it, Tivo it and rent something else.

I did see that film and I liked it. I need to see it again. Frankly, I would have guessed that no one on this board had ever heard of Tristram Shandy. Nice to know the film is being seen.

Good movie. Have you seen Velvet Goldmine? That's a very underrated film. There's a lot of the gay in that one, but great original music.

I just saw Haack: King of Techno based on this post from another thread. Had never heard of the guy before, but it was a very interesting documentary about Bruce Haack. The movie shows you what happens when 60s and 70s psychadelic hippie druggie music crashes head first into electronic music. Very unique sounding. Some of it was pretty trippy, some just plain strange. But nonetheless, well worth the 1 hour of playing time for sure if you are into music at all.

Watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang last night based on high recommendations in this thread. Maybe not as enjoyable as some made it out to be, but good nonetheless. Downey Jr. and Kilmer were both very good, Kilmer especially. Probably my favorite scene was seeing the girl creeping through her home holding her baseball bat...with "Wonder Girl" etched into it. Great little homage to The Natural.

I just watched this and didn't think it was that bad. Fight scenes were reminiscent of The Transporter (same director, not sure if it's the same fight choreographer). The fight scene in the Water Closet was very well done.

We watched Match Point tonight. I never thought to watch it until people on this thread told me that it wasn't just a love story/chick flick.

I can't say a lot for the movie. It was ok. I thought there was supposed to be some kind of twist at the end. Not exactly.

But Jesus Christ if Scarlett Johanson isn't the most amazing woman in film. It's indescribable. She isn't the most beautiful woman, but her presence is amazing. She really is an "it" girl. I just waited for the next scene she was in. That grey t-shirt was awesome.

The movie was alright. At least it wasn't a chick flick. Sure wasn't a Woody Allen film either.

Movie about two Palestinian young men "chosen" for suicide mission. It was fascinating portrayal of that side of the equation. I would highly recommend it. Also, I couldn't help but think the whole time that learning Arabic would be immensely challenging.

Watched this last nite. Agree with the recommendation, it was quite interesting. Also had the same thoughts about how hard it would be to live in that environment, as well as the sense that there will never be a lasting peace in the middle east since there are so many people with such a deeply ingrained hatred of the mere existance of Israel. Good movie.

I guess it worked for me. I think I'd like to see the original L'Appartment of which this is a remake.

I'm still amazed at how a director can maintain a certain "mood" for an entire film.

I give it a solid 7 of 10.

Saw Memoirs of a Geisha and The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe this weekend. Both were decent, but not as good as I had hoped. I'd read both books over the years and knew the plots, so that might be why I was slightly disappointed.

Wardrobe suffers from some bad pacing and dialogue for the first hour but gets really good the last hour. The special effects are amazing, particularily the battle scenes.

Geisha is pretty solid the whole way thru, with my only nitpick being I was actually kind of disappointed in Zang Ziyi's big dance scene in the middle of the film. It was very good, but pales in comparison to some of the stuff she has done before like in House of 1,000 Daggers. Michelle Yoeh is just

Both films are definitely worth seeing if you are considering.

Diva- This was my favorite movie as a kid and I finally got my wife to see it. As with most things I liked as a kid, I was curious to see if it held up... and it did. Beautifully filmed and styled, interesting story (by the guy who did Betty Blue) with enough action to lift it past the horrible acting of the opera star turned actress who is the "diva".

I have a list of movies in our Netflix queue (Duck Soup, Bill Hicks) but I'd like to get something in there for wifey, since she's sat through a couple of my picks in a row. Any suggestions? Recent movies preferred...

By the time I got to the twist I felt the story was so far gone it ruined what could have been a good ending... then they draged it on for an extra 10 minutes when it should have just ended with Clive Owen leaving the hotel and returning home.

Not recent, but a very underrated film is "Flirting" with Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton and Nicole Kidman. About young love at a boarding school. LINKIf she likes sweet documentaries, "The Story of the Weeping Camel" is very good.

"Weeping Camel" is Iranian, right? After Diva, not likely she's going to want to go for antoher subtitled film. She's actually more of a Sci-Fi/fantasy/horror fan than I am- so anything in those genres would be great.

And did somebody actually like "Derailed"? Wow... I thought that was one of the worst movies I've seen this year. Badly written, characters not acting the way anybody would act in reality, and... there was a twist? If there was, it wasn't very twisty.

Max is cool because it doesn't attempt to make another "Hitler is a monster" film. We know Hitler was a bad guy. What interests me is wondering how he became what he became.Machinist isn't perfect, and it's subtle. Certainly owes a lot to films like The Sixth Sense. But Bale is good, as always.

Bruno Ganz is a fine European actor that never really hooked up with the Hollywood set. I first saw him in "wings of desire" and later in vignette in "especially on sunday". i had thought he died a few years ago but was pleased to see his name turn up for "downfall". i've been meaning to see that, as its probably better than alec guiness' turn as der fuhrer. kinda weird to see obi wan kenobi as hitler...

No doubt. I wasn't looking forward to Downfall. I've seen so many films about WWII, a new one doesn't always excite me. But this was powerful stuff.
