- I remember this film getting a lot of bad reviews. While I won't say it was great, I liked it. Pretty depressing at times, but I enjoyed it.

Overall I liked the movie, but the ending was terrible.

Spielberg at his worst (for the ending). I agree with you guys though- overall, a good watch.

Can somebody explain to me how the machines were destroyed ?

The super-intelligent aliens who mastered the physics of inter-stellar travel apparently never noticed that the earth is covered with bacteria, and of course the aliens all die as a result of not having any built-up immunity. bligatorySignsreference:

Yeah, what the hell is that? Everytime humans are in a space movie, they always have that thingamajig that tells if the atmosphere is breathable....THEN they take off the helmets.

I still want to know why an advanced alien war species would feel the need to bury their war machines on various desolate worlds?? Does that mean, that there are tripods on the moon, Mars, Pluto, etc??

They're buried on planets that they can harvest.

Why are they buried then? If they're already here, why would they bury them and wait?

So they can spread out the depreciation cost?

I watched this tonite. Very clever movie. Could not have possibly agreed more with your first paragraph. Great soundtrack, really added to the excitement level. Potente *IS* absolutely amazing when she runs, and no she isn't terribly attractive. Very short and to the point, pretty nonstop high speed. Definate , great reco.

I watched a movie called Havoc about a week ago.

This is a movie about upper-class white kids in LA who act black (and refer to themselves a "wiggers" -- their choice of words, not mine). Some of them decide to cruise over to the hood, and things go badly. Some of the girls decide to go back, and things eventually get even worse.

Basically, this film explores the issue of why people choose to adopt certain identities, and how people strive for a "real" existence instead of a stale life that they consider fake or artificial. In this respect, it hits on some of the same themes as Fight Club and American Beauty. It also plays around with issues of race and class in modern America, and does so without stooping into the kind of abject racism that marred Traffic.

Havoc is unrated for the same reason that Requiem for a Dream is unrated. It features extremely graphic, un-erotic sexuality. I only mention this for the sake of people who don't want to watch films that feature this sort of stuff.

A good example of the sort of indie film that might fly under the radar, but is probably available at your video store.

I checked this movie out last nite. It was a good movie, but something about it just missed with me. I think it just got a little out of control on the realism factor. When they first go to the hood, Toby's (he was the head rich guy right?) reaction to "things going badly" had me rolling my eyes. I mean, who REALLY does that? And then as bad as things were, the girls STILL go back, where things start to get ugly, yet they decide to go back yet AGAIN. And their decisions that lead up to the "extremely graphic, un-erotic sexuality" seemed really far fetched. I just couldn't get that anyone, let alone girls, would consistently make decisions that were THAT bad. (Then again, I'm not a rich white high school kid so maybe that was realistic behavior).I still liked it, just several things that distracted me from the main message I think.

This sounded interesting until Elway's critique. I can't stand movies that rely on "real" characters behaving in an "un-real" way just to propel the plot. It's almost as bad as the plot technique of having the main characters misunderstand eachother in a ridiculously obvious way-- King Kong's balls... I said Ping Pong balls!-- to further the plot. I call this the "Three's Company" technique.

FWIW I really enjoyed Traffic, though, and without going back and reading the other reviews of Havoc, I thought I recalled a lot of people who didn't enjoy Traffic DID enjoy Havoc. And Crash (arguably the king of "racism issues bluntly rammed down your throat with no subtlety") was one of my favorites.Havoc wasn't unwatchable by any stretch, I just didn't care for the way the characters responded to many of the situations.

Watched Quick Change after seeing some good reviews in another thread here. I was a bit disappointed. It was one of the funnier of Bill Murray's more recent movies that I've seen, but I guess my expectations were just a little too high. Got a couple of chuckles out of it, but no really good laughs.

Havoc ...... Nudity, violence, white rich kids acting poh and all gangsta, vatos in the hood making rich snobs wet their pants, naked Anne Hathaway, bling bling, naked Bijou Phillips. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. the movie is a little too annoying to be a guilty pleasure ( I wanted to smack that kid from 3rd Rock from the Son who was acting all gangsta but it's close.)

Underworld..... I'm not a huge fan of Euro trash vampire movies. It seems that all they do is sit around in a big mansion with all this technology, look pretty and wait for some big thing to happen that'll change the face of vampirism for all time. I prefer my vampires dirty....like old school movies like Dracula, and contemporary flicks like Near Dark and John Carpenter's Vampires. That being said... this one was alright. I'll watch the next one.

Tarantino's got a great mind, but sometimes he overdoes it on the dialogue. Take Kill Bill 2 for instance:Beatrix finally gets to Bill and he goes on a 30 minute schpiel about superheros, finally culminating in a "swordfight" that took about 10 seconds. Then he takes 5 minutes to die.

Followed by the 5 minute speech about death and the 5 steps it takes to actually die. It's just a minor gripe, and if the dialogue had been totally horrible, you'd see me just trashing the whole Kill Bill series, but David Carradine was just fantastic throughout #2. The whole Kill Bill series was absolutely excellent, even if Tarantino did make you scratch your head a little about his direciton.

Tarantino's got a great mind, but sometimes he overdoes it on the dialogue. Take Kill Bill 2 for instance:Beatrix finally gets to Bill and he goes on a 30 minute schpiel about superheros, finally culminating in a "swordfight" that took about 10 seconds. Then he takes 5 minutes to die.

I can see why that doesn't work for people. The reason stuff like that works for me is Tarantino isn't an action film director, he's a film artist that happens to like action. I've seen a million films where the protagonist has a 10 minute fight scene with the antagonist. So when these two have a conversation before the fight, I think it's a way to re-invent the genre.

Plus, you just can't beat the five point palm-exploding heart technique.

Followed by the 5 minute speech about death and the 5 steps it takes to actually die. It's just a minor gripe, and if the dialogue had been totally horrible, you'd see me just trashing the whole Kill Bill series, but David Carradine was just fantastic throughout #2. The whole Kill Bill series was absolutely excellent, even if Tarantino did make you scratch your head a little about his direciton.

I liked both Kill Bill films for different reasons. But I see them more of an homage to chop sockey than great, enduring Tarantino films. Given how much I love Tarantino's dialogue, I prefer Jackie Brown to both KB films.

I just watched it a few hours ago and I liked it very much. Part of Spike's MO has always been to over due the "ridiculous stereotype's". In his early years it was what was so "powerfull" about his movies. Now we look for him and others, to mainstream their movies and he has not. I have no problem with that. He is just doing what he does and making not so subtle points on America's stereotypes. He may not say it straight out as much anymore, but he puts it in all his movies, period. I expect that in every movie of his I see. This movie just happens to be very entertaining to go with it, and that is what I liked.P.S. The only other new release I could get today was Larry the Health Inspector. Don't bother. I don't see how there were ridiculous stereotypes. The Sikh (sic??) guy was so natural, I think Lee picked him off the street to play that role. There was that Jewish guy who offered to "call his cousin" to get Denzel a diamond ring. But then Spike tends to enjoy Jewish stereotypes (see Mo Better Blues). Everything with the stereotypes, I'm saying.But seriously, this is a film in New York. Pretty diverse culture. But back to the movie, Jodie foster ####### rocked in this film. One of the more interesting characters I've seen in awhile.

P.S. The only other new release I could get today was Larry the Health Inspector. Don't bother. Even for a desperation, looking for a few laughs movie, it had two parts that actually made me lol. stay away

It's not that I want Spike to mainstream his movies. It's that I want him to grow up and be a better director. He hasn't and by now I think he's pretty incapable. The racism in this movie was unnecessary and stupid and ridiculous -- like Crash. If that was Spike's goal, well, Mission Accomplished.

Dukes of Hazzard - Awful. Whoever thought up the movie concept for the Dukes should be taken out in the street and beaten with a rusty serving spoon. None of the characters matched up with who they were in the show. I realize that they wanted to make it popular to the younger generation, but those of use who grew up with the Dukes know this isn't them. Bo and Luke weren't bumbling idiots, Daisy wasn't an airhead, Roscoe WAS a bumbling idiot, Boss Hogg...while mean...definitely had a comic edge to him. I was highly disappointed.

Benchwarmers - Meh. It was alright. Definitely not the best movie out there, but I thought it was the best of these three (which, I guess, really isn't saying much). I actually did laugh a few times and thought it had a cute (although predictable) ending.

Bill Hicks, One Night Stand... he's kinda funny, I guess- full credit for going after things of substance- but his schtick left me pretty meh. A bit disappointed after some people who's opinion I respect putting him near the top of all stand-up comics.
