The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift

No, I did not rent this pile of garbage. Since I bought a plasma HDTV, I have been taping tons of HD programming just for the fun of checking it out. I made it about 15 minutes through this "movie" and shut it off.
Should have stayed for glimpses of super hot Asians. Between the hot Asians and drifting scenes I actually liked this movie.
That sound you hear is me scrambling to re-record the movie

watched lady vengeance by korean director that did old boy (far superior movie)... i'll never get that 2 hrs of my life back...

watched inland empire by david lynch... makes lost highway & mulholland drive look like the red baloon... the LEAST weird part was at the end in what looked like a wrap party, with an urban song/dance troupe, one-legged woman, monkey & a lumberjack...

Have you or anybody else watched Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance? I bought the DVD but didn't recognize that it wouldn't play in my DVD zone. I thought Oldboy was great and heard great things about Vengeance.

I saw Knocked Up on Friday.

I was expecting it to be a laugh out loud riot......while it had some funny parts it was very slow paced. It wasn't bad, just didn't keep me engaged like I thought it would.

Do you guys shave your balls? Anyone with hairy #### would love this movie.

I've seen them all. I rated Oldboy the best, followed by Lady Vengeance, followed by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Last night I checked out The Fountain

This was one of my wife's choices and I was duped into watching it as I thought it was about something else. Anyway, I kinda liked the movie. There were some nice visuals, a very metaphysical movie, with a bit going on. I didn't find the acting particularly astonishing, but it didn't detract from the story either. I will say I was getting into this one, and then around the 90 minute mark, it's as if they had a deadline and they wrapped everything up in like 5 minutes. The pace of the previous part of the movie was good, and the story was o.k...and then all of the sudden, WHAMO, the movie kinda just decides to end in one fell swoop :goodposting: I wish it played out just a bit longer, I kind of felt there was a little more story to tell/show. Overall, not too shabby, i'll give it a 5.5/10

We Are Marshall - 6.5/10

Would have been a 7 if it were 10 minutes shorter and McConaughey had stayed in character longer. As it is, it's still pretty good and I liked it better than Remember The Titans.

Wild Hogs - 5/10

My mom & dad were in town and my mom wanted to watch this. Just shows how much I love my parents. This movie exemplifies why I rarely take chances on comedies - a couple funny jokes at the beginning, lame drama in the middle, a deus ex machina solution to the "madcap" situation the characters invariably find themselves in. Not funny.

Gallipoli - 0/10

It's not that it's a terrible movie. There's nothing there to hate. The problem is that there's also NOTHING there that's remotely interesting. I wouldn't recommend this movie to any audience. It was like eating paper.

I actually like that movie. It's a little dry and obvious but Peter Weir specializes in that kind of thing.

Wow...Really? Nothing remotely interesting? This is one of my favorite films...You didn't find that ending powerful? I still remmeber seeing it for the first time when I was like 12 or so, and feeling like a truck ht me at that ending

I know I was supposed to, but no I didn't. Maybe it's because I know a bit about the military tactics and the bravado of British officers in WWI so I knew what was going to happen. That probably minimized it for me. Plus, I didn't feel any connection to the characters.

I guess I've seen too many "kid with delusions of grandeur finds war to be more than he bargained for costing him his life" war movie moments.

He certainly sucked the life out of Master & Commander.

That's another one I really liked...I'd say you just don't like Weir's pacing as a director...

Bump to add: Marisa Tomei is still cute as a button though.

:lmao:
 Liked it, but expected more lols. Found the stoner roomies too cliche, ableit funny. Wanted more from them and the movie. Wife pointed out that the lead guy was pretty much an #######, epsecially for outkicking the coverage with the chick. The movie almost acted as if it was just normal for the two of them to have hooked up- an uber-hot TV person and a fat shlubby slacker loser... yeah- that's normal, see, because he's funny. And the scenes with Paul Rudd(?), the costar from 40yo Virgin, just seemed like more shtick from the Virgin movie- as if they had some out-takes from that and just reshot them for this movie... funny bits, but still... I harp- only because I care.

I know you own a video store, but if this is one of the worst movies you've seen in a long time, you aren't watching that many movies :banned:

She's my wife. Stay away from her.

Two films I couldn't finish:

Ab-Normal Beauty

I am getting tired of Asian Extreme cinema. The dark, twisted, ugly nature of the genre was refreshing when I started with films like The Eye and Audition. But enough already.

The Prisoner (or, How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair)

Really interesting documentary about an Iraqi journalist falsely accused of plotting to kill the British Prime Minister. The problem? The sound. Worst sound mix I've ever heard in a movie. The most critical part of the film is the journalist's narration of what happened. So what does the sound editor do? The guy's voice is so quiet you have to crank your TV all the way up, only to have every other sound effect or bit of music blast your ears. Sorry. If you expect me to watch a movie, I expect professional sound editing.

I didn't think that much of the movie, but it was an ok, if laughable, watch. Not anywhere near the worst for me, but up there as the gayest (Man... there was a Pirates movie from the early to mid 70s that probably wins in that category... can't remember the name... mebbe Pirates?).

DAMN! I thought this was a movie version or even DVD of the epic British TV series, The Prisoner (where's Falconeyed? Be seeing you)- probably my favorite TV show of all time.

Had to get another job too, so I haven't been able to watch that many movies lately. Still thought this was a horrible movie. 0 dialog, and I can't stand that new wave of "special effects" that makes it seem like I'm watching a video game. If you are going to spear a guy in the movie, so be it - no need to freeze frame it, rotate it, and take up 20secs in the process to do so. I wrote up my review before, but there was also a scene on the battle field that I thought the Persian general was going to give the main character a reach around. I thought the movie was gayer than Spartacus and Top Gun combined. Trust me, I realize that I am in the small minority, and I found the movie unwatchable. JMO, but I rank this right along side of Ghost Rider as far as movies that I would never watch again.

I agree that the action genre is played, and 300 is far from perfect. But I think it achieved an artistic look that is practically unparalleled.

:wall: But so did Star Wars Episodes 1-3. And they weren't quite as gay. NTTAWT.

Miami Vice...

Figured- Michael Mann, how bad could it be? Answer... about that bad. Some nice, Michael Mann shots and a big Michael Mann gun battle... why did they make this movie?

I'm going to have to confirm El Floppo's review here, Krista. Miami Vice was so bad I stopped watching it, then tried again, and couldn't finish it. And as El Floppo will I'm sure confirm, we don't see eye to eye on everything.

comments on a few movies mentioned above...

i liked the fountain a lot... for those that don't know, by same director (daren aronofsky?) that did pi & requiem for a dream... he is imo a talented young director & worth following... apparently the production history was troubled & this almost didn't get made (at one point they shut down production & auctioned off sets, i think)...

miami vice was as brutal as advertised... even if you are a big michael mann fan (i liked manhunter, the silence of the lambs "prequel" & the vice series), i'm guessing most people can safely skip this... there must be something better, like leonard 6, or that elron hubbard inspired battleship earth by dianetics-proselytizing travolta (worst movies i could think of off the top of my head  )...

* i forgot to mention couple music videos...

eagles farewell concert I... more rocking that acoustic hell freezes over, joe walsh (one of my favorite guitarists) is very prominent...

cream reunion... they can still play, & well worth watching if you liked them before...

both of these are available in HD...

i saw the first three discs of scorcese's blues series & enjoyed them (heavy weight director wim wenders of buena vista social club & until the end of the world fame did one)...

Horrible, boring stuff. I think an inferior director kidnapped Michael Mann, assumed his identity, and made this junky movie.

Question for the group.

What movies have you rented based on reviews in this thread, and what did you think of them?

Mine have been...

The Station Agent - Which was very good and not something I would never have heard of outside of this thread.

Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang - Another really good one that I rented based on the recommendations in this thread.

Probably have been numerous others that I have forgotten about, but in gerneral the recommendations from this thread have been excellent.

Oh god, it wasn't that I really wasn't taking into account his review of Miami Vice, which is not a movie I would ever consider seeing even with a gun to my head. I just wanted to take the opportunity to make fun of him for seeing such awful movies but not being "allowed" to see a great one. :P

Your etc.,

PS: If people brought the mountainous theater movie to Muhammed, he might not be stuck watching HBO drivel. :lmao:

In The Valley of Elah

One of those movies where it seemed like not much really happened, but it kept me interested the whole time. I liked it :excited:

Eastern Promises.

Very solid flick. I didn't like Cronenberg's last effort, A History of Violence, but this was real good. Some pretty graphic scenes in this movie including a memorable fight scene. Mortenson puts in a great performance too.

Definetly worth checking out.

While I haven't agreed with every take on these films, I have netted a lot of good rentals from reading these posts regularly. Excellent resource :(

I've seen a couple of films over the last couple of weeks between Netflix and HBO:

Knocked Up

This is really two films. The first half is funny and somewhat fresh. The second half is an absolute bore. I am hoping that Superbad is better overall.

Hostel

Meh. I do enjoy a good horror film. But I must say that American horror films mostly stink these days. Grossout scenes and music that is supposed to make me feel scared is not scary. American directors need to look to the Italians and the Japanese to remember what horror films are supposed to be like.

watched the crime thriller The Lookout last night.

The wife thought it was a little contrived, but I thought it was interesting and had some excellent acting peformances by Jeff Daniels and Matthew Goode who was in Match Point.

87% rating on RottenTomatoes
Good ratings...I have it to watch this weekend....
Just watched this as well and was pleasantly surprised. Not perfect, but still better than 90% of the new rentals that have come out in the last month or so.
:goodposting: Good plot and it was very consistent throughout. The caring stripper angle had me hooked.
