Monkey Man - Finally watched this tonight on Peacock. Awesome. If you like action, hard to imagine you wouldn't like this. Reminds me of John Wick.
Just caught this. I thought it was great.

I would expect award consideration for the technical aspects.

Stunning debut from Dev Patel as a director.
Guess I'll try it again. Not sure how far I got into it but I bailed after 30-40 min. Just wasn't holding me.

Started some post apoc thing with Peter Dinlklage and Elle Fanning as so-far sole survivors... Not sure what the point of it is, tbh. Not sure I'll finish.

I didn't care for it either. I gave up on it and have no plans to try again.

The Worst Person in the World: Denmark. My first watch of this in 2022 left me thrilled. On 2nd viewing, I can say this is in the running for my favorite movie of the 2020s. Full of energy and sex and edge and intelligence. I love everything about this movie. It's what I would consider a truly modern rom-com. Our lead Julie is constantly evolving, shifting and self destructing. I will probably watch this movie 5,10,20 more times. Renate Reinsve is so awesome in this. It's a perfect match of star, screenplay and direction.
this was really good. Don't know if the mushroom trip was supposed to be funny but we laughed. There was only one minor scene I didn't like or understand the point of. WPitW, Past Lives and Zone of Interest has piqued my interest in movies with no stars or famous people.

Also watched Copa 71. Which I enjoyed mostly for getting the info that there WAS a copa 71... And for the 71' haircuts.

Oh right and Boys in the Boat, which I guess was the best of the 3.

Which scene?

I agree with you that those 3 movies were excellent and even though maybe they don’t have mass appeal or big stars, they are proof there are still great movies to be made.

I watched Dude, Where's My Car? in a watch party with some college friends. One had never seen it before (and wasn't impressed). I still like it - it's stupid and some of the bits don't work (ordering Chinese food), but I didn't mind watching it again. Only downside is that to avoid Hulu's commercials, I paid to rent it so we could stay synched. Embarrassingly, this is the second time I've paid for this movie this year - my son rented it over the winter.

when her ex is being interviewed. I'm trying to stay clear of those type of culture discussions.

At some point, I bought a DVD pack that included that one along with Super Troopers and Club Dread. Been awhile since I’ve watched any, but definitely got some good laughs out of that set 15-20 years ago.

Looking for a movie to watch like those old sci-fi movies, back to the future and such.
I've also enjoyed and already watched: Time after Time and About time

no and then

The Great Beauty: Italy. A 2013 spiritual sequel to La Dolce Vita. Jep Gambardella is a theater critic and king of Roman nightlife but as 65th birthday arrives, he becomes disullusioned with his band of Roman socialites, nighclubs and meaningless overinduelgence. La Dolce Vita has become one of my favorite movies and I was just in Rome in June so my expectations were high but I was disappointed. Maybe too high of expecations? I don't know, just didn't love it. Felt like it had nothing new to say.

Emitai: Senegal. The Diola tribe are dragged into WW2 when the French force them take up arms and fight. This is a movie about colonial resistance. Not in the way The Battle of Algiers is. Here, the primary resistance comes from the women. When the tribe is ordered to give the French their rice, the women hide it. The resistance here is stoic and passive. It comes through prayer and discourse with their gods. There are some challenging thoughts as we see a culture come face to face with a world in which it can no longer function. The older men say that it used to be that the young inherit from the old but now the old inherit from the young- in this case they are inheriting the problems of the young, specifically the tragedy of the war and the profound loss it brings. The men also beg their gods for help but the gods refuse them to which the men warn the gods that if the men don't exist, the gods won't either. Very good movie, quite different too with a haunting quality.

My Neighbor Totoro: Japan. So my "adopted" daughter is into cartoons and I've bonded with her watching stuff like the Inside Out movies, Robot Dreams, etc. She's not into any Japanese cartoons so I thought Miyazaki could be a new world of cartoons she would like and we could explore. So I optimistically checked out my first Studio Ghibli film. Unfortunately, I didn't get the appeal. It was cute I guess but I was bored through most of it and it's only 86 minutes. Maybe someone can explain to me why I should check out a different Ghibli film or that this one is different than most? I am very hesisitant to try another and I certainly won't recommend them to the kid.

The Big City: India. Satyajit Ray is a master film maker. I've only ever seen 1 other movie of his but this pretty much seals it for me. Think Ozu and Yang, this unassuming story of a family forced to buck tradition and send the wife into the workforce to help provide financial support is so simple yet layered and touching. Characters are three dimensional and dynamic. The melodrama of everyday life while also representing a massive societal shift. It's so good with both the little and the big. Loved this and the performance by Madhabi Mukherjee is maybe the best of anyone in my little summer of foreign films series.

Wife and I are about halfway through the most recent Kingdom of the Apes.

Still up in the air. Though the special effects are top notch.

Yea it didn't get any better for me. Not sure why, typically something I'd like but this one fell flat for me.

I liked it but I grew up on the originals so I'm kinda hooked for life. Charleton Heston screaming on a beach in front of the statue of liberty head is iconic. https://youtu.be/pbBpinyqE-0?si=WD8PdqsBwSiWk8Us

Aguirre, The Wrath of God

If Terrence Malik directed Apocalypse Now...

And thank goodness he didn't.
I still haven't gotten to this one, and I know you meant the bolded as a pejorative, but that makes me want to watch it more now.
I know. It's like our own interpersonal BatSignal. :hifive:

I didn't dislike it, to be clear. I just think it has about 60 minutes of material that gets stretched to 90-ish. The opening and closing scenes are pretty great. I think it has the bones for a pretty decent remake. Seems tailor made for Pedro Pascal (or Oscar Isaac).

Yeah, I can't recommend it because I haven't seen it, but I know it belongs on that list.

I watched this sometime this month. The main actor Klaus Kinski commands the screen - just captivating. I've read he was the worst to work with - there's some quote from Herzog, who cast him in a lot of movies, that roughly says he's the greatest actor and also a monster.

There were some odd bits in this movie that didn't work for me (the daughter scene near the end is one), but as a descent into madness, it was really well done. Apocalypse Now is the correct comparison.

I watched all 3 in the past year. They were well done, but something was missing for me. I found myself walking away for a week before finishing the second half.

Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping (Peacock): I found this hilarious. A modern take on Spinal Tap that had me consistently laughing the whole way through. Tim Meadows was a good side character here - his deadpan delivery works well in contrast to Andy Samberg doing an over the top pop star act.

If you like that you should watch all the Samberg/lonely island stuff. Bash bros for example

I liked it  Kinski's performance is a meal but I can't think of any actor who'd be better.

I love Werner Herzog. He can be slow but is always interesting. I'd recommend Stroszek to everyone. It certainly has more laughs than Aguirre. It's on Tubi.

So funny. I might have to watch that tonight now, I saw it was on Peacock too. Or maybe Hot Rod.

Rough week last week, so I was trying some random comedies and watched a double feature of mistaken identities - Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest.

The new Elizabeth Taylor documentary on HBO Max is pretty good. It's built around a series of audio interviews she did in at the peak of her fame in the mid 60s. The bio moves at a good pace and it's a good gimmick to have her own voice driving the narrative.

The woman led a scandalous life even by current standards and she was also quite a dish.

Three Amigos was my favorite movie for part of my youth. I haven't seen it in years, but think I could still quote most of it.

During the filming of Fitzcarraldo (in Peru, with hundreds of Native actors and extras), Kinski was so difficult that the Native leaders came to director Herzog and offered to kill Kinski for him.

Not even the only time. The producer of the film Crawlspace also suggested they kill him for the insurance money.

Plane to CA, watched League of Ungentlemanly Arnold movie imitation, which I assume was intended to be dispassionately silly.

Also watched Copa 71. Which I enjoyed mostly for getting the info that there WAS a copa 71... And for the 71' haircuts.

Oh right and Boys in the Boat, which I guess was the best of the 3.

I tried to watch Boys in the Boat on a plane. I knew I was in trouble from the opening sequence. So much string music. I just couldn’t.

Lol. Formulaic to a fault, including the strings, but it was a story I didn't know that felt relevant. The story is better than the telling of it here.

I knew the story (PNW lore) so didn't feel like I needed to see it there, but it makes sense that it could be worth watching if you didn't.

after seeing the new Deadpool last week and all the xmen references and easter eggs, I went through the X-men catalog in chronological order.
The New Mutants, never heard of it and damn it was horrible .
Such a range of movies from crap to pretty good for this franchise

I hope that one gets a proper reboot, it was one of my favorite comic series growing up. I got into it kind of late right when they spun it into X-Force

Floppinha is a tennis player, so decided to watch Challengers with Zendaya on the plane home yesterday. Wow is that an unredeemably terrible movie.
