The Way Way Back (2013): I had never even heard of this until @KarmaPolice suggested it but it's a really good coming of age story about a shy kid who gets dragged a long with his mom and her new boyfriend to his summer home in a beach town. It's predictable- funny, lots of heart, etc. but where it really shines is the cast. Steve Carell as a DB supreme, Toni Collette as the caring but conflicted mom, Allison Janey as the drunk boundary stepping neighbor, Amanda Peet as the fun loving beach town flirt, Maya Rudolph as a sweet but tired water park employee but the real show stealer is Sam Rockwell. He's the owner of the local water park and simultaneously manages to be the coolest guy you've ever met and a complete loser. This great for people of any age but if you have tweens or teens, I think this is the perfect summer movie to watch as a family.

I recently watched this as well for the first time. Not tippy top (i think the boy's character was the weak spot), but still very worth watching in the coming of age genre.
Yeah the weak spot is the young characters in it. I do agree there. He is supposed to be awkward which he sells but it's just less compelling than the adults.
I love the movie, but agree with all this. Not best of the decade fare or anything, but a very nice surprise. Rockwell is the main draw for me as well. Like you said - he manages that balance of loser guy just getting by and a warm father figure you'd want to be around for the summer too. Carrel as the DB was a great job by him.

I'm glad to see a few people here tried it and liked it.

My music theme started with quite the odd mix: Del Toro's Pinocchio, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

I have a few other new-to-me options written down, but the main rewatches were going to be Once and The Broken Circle Breakdown will be my bridge movie into foreign language week.

Eurovision Song Contest, Will ferrell

And speaking of...i watched Coda for the first time last night.

Nice movie- writing a little formulaic for the coming of age aspects (albeit adding deafness to the equation, which was new for me), but well done. I had forgotten this won the oscar- doesnt seem that level to me, despite being a nice movie. Really enjoyed the performance of the dad.

That is one i didn’t think of. That's the newer one with Rachel McAdams too?

I enjoyed Accountant 2.... Lacked something from the first one but still decent
I found it to be confusing. So many different groups of characters, was hard to figure out who was connected to who and how/why.

The first one was far simpler and just better.

Good, sweet movie. Absoluely baffling it won best picture. That year Power of the Dog was the big favorite for months and months out, almost became a foregone conclusion it would win until a couple weeks before the show. I think it was divisive and certainly not uplifting. With COVID and everything going on in the world, the positivity of CODA really appealed to voters. Also CODA was a big beneficiary of ranked voting. There were a lot of better movies but most of them were polarizing in just enough of a way that they likely got ranked low for a chunk of voters. I doubt anyone disliked Coda enough to rank it at the bottom.

The Broken Circle Breakdown

Absolutely devastating movie, which of course means I loved it.

So now it's 21st century music-related movies?
I've just been having fun doing a theme a week to focus on a couple movies I wanted to watch or rewatch for research on the list. I went through year by year and wrote down anything I remember liking enough to recommend at the stores or here, or ones I hadn't gotten to yet. That list is easily 700+ movies. Some years had 40-50 movies written down. I did a gut reaction quick list of ones I had the strongest pull towards as I read the titles and came up with 50-60, so that will be a core starting point, but I thought these themes would help focus down on a few and each one had a core movie I wanted to rewatch for the list such as Before Midnight, About Time, Tree of Life, Rogue One, and this week with Once.

Broken Circle is another one I am pretty sure I have seen and remember really liking, but don't remember much about so I thought that would a good bridge to next week's foreign movies. For that week Diving Bell and the Butterfly is the main rewatch target and I have a couple other ones I want to watch for the first time, mainly a couple from Kore-eda I have been wanting to get to.

you've likely already seen it and it might be fresh enough on your mind that you don't feel the need to rewatch but Whiplash is a solid music watch
I watched that at the start of the summer for a refresher. Hint: I love it and it is on my list somewhere. I haven't been listing all the ones I watch or all my reactions so there can be some surprises. There are also some I have watched that I had very highly rated when I did my threads several years ago that I was surprised I didn't click with quite as much. One is listed in the post above to Krista.

Star Wars Ep3 would be an example of that. I had myself convinced that it was one of the better ones, but I really did not enjoy the watch a couple weeks ago. I probably would have shut it off if I was watching alone, but I was watching with my daughter and she was having a blast. That is way more important than my enjoyment.

See, we like some movies. We can still be friends.

I wasn't active as far as posting in your fantasy/sci-fi thread, but I was nodding my head at a lot of those picks. Big points from me for inclusion of movies like Krampus, Rare Exports, Brave, Dark City, and Stranger than Fiction. We definitely have a good amount of crossover in movies.

It was just fantasy, scores did the fantasy/sci-fi one. I need to stop being lazy and watch Wings of Desire before I make my first edit

Sorry, I totally misread the title of the thread.

As far as that movie, just watch the Nic Cage remake, right @krista4 ?? That is one that I need to rewatch - yet another Criterion 4K I own but haven't gotten to yet.

If referencing Once, the obvious "should also see" is Sing Street , by the same guy from the Frames who directed Once. Also fits the coming of age bill. A movie that surprised me, like Once, by having a fairly slender story that just works.

For the millionth time...

There really is no other movie like Blade Runner. The look and sound are just amazing. What struck me upon this viewing is how episodic it is - I think an interesting stylistic choice would have been using chapter titles.

And what's not talked about is how Gothic it is. It has so many elements -
Atmosphere of Dread & Sublime
Monstrosities
Forbidden Knowledge & The Mad Scientist
Etc

I think from now on I'm going to describe it as Future Gothic Noir.

And Deckard is human.

At first I was like "there was no remake!" but I googled it and it's City of Angels. I might have to watch both to compare and see why Wings of Desire is held in such high regard while City of Angels seemed to be mostly well liked by fans but not that well liked by critics. Iris is such a great song.

Maybe you have said elsewhere, but why is that?

For me in general I just think the prequels look terrible. The GCI is bad looking to my eyes, and there is a lot of it. I think it's also clear George is a big picture, ideas guy and doesn't excel at directing actors. There are some top notch stars in these but it felt like everybody was mailing it in. I could have just been in a pissy mood the other week as well. I haven't revisited 7-9 recently, so it's possible I have an even stronger negative reaction to those, but I remember at least some of the action scenes felt better when I saw them in the theater.

It’s definitely campy but I think that final 30 minutes or whatever with obi-wan vs Anakin and Yoda vs Palps are some of the best scenes in all of Star Wars

Also it created so many great Star Wars memes

Anytime I see it on TV I’m tuning in and finishing it. I tried to get the wife to go see it on the big screen for the 25th but no luck

If I'm going to do a "haven't seen it again in a decade" rewatch, which version of the original am I looking for again?

He was just ribbing me because Wings of Desire is my favorite movie and City of Angels is dreck.

The Final Cut

Family movie night - "Without Limits" based on the brief but brilliant running career of Steve Prefontaine. Never saw it when it came out back in '98 but it's decent. Anything with Donald Sutherland is going to hold my attention and the interactions between coach and athlete (Billy Crudup was really good) was well done. A little cheesy in parts but a good family film for folks living in Oregon. I'd probably prefer a documentary on Pre to the Hollywood version of his life, but this was a decent little movie.

Oh, and I'm going to see F1 tonight with 2 friends and I am all kinds of geeked up for this one. :bag:

I know it'll be formulaic and predictable and just like Top Gun Maverick, I don't care. I just want to be mindlessly entertained for 2 hours.

Found a good one on Peacock last night. The Outfit. Really good. I love movies that are literally are shot on a single set. 8/10
only one outfit, or is there a change of clothes on the single set?
Interestingly enough, it takes place in a tailor’s shop, but the reference to outfit is not clothing
Just had no idea what this was about.

But these one or limited set movies seem like theyre always from plays. I just watched one that was completely pointless...dammit lol...completely forgotten the name.

Update?

Wasn't sure if this was the thread for it since I saw it in a theater.

I liked it. Was confused a few times during the racing scenes as I have no idea how F1 works or the strategies involved, or 'team' racing, but that's okay, I wasn't there for an education. Just there for mindless entertainment and it fit the bill. Nothing ground breaking and I'm in no rush to watch it again, but like Top Gun Maverick, it was a fun watch and I'm glad I saw it on the big screen.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

Strangely paced for a Hitchcock movie - it sort of limps along in fits and starts. Definitely not among his best.
It grew a bit on me the 2nd time I saw it and I do like it more than his 30s version but I agree with you that it isn't Hitch at his best except for the opera scene, that is among the best things he's ever filmed.

the final duel would be 1000x better if neither talked.
I agree here - even McGregor's stuff seemed bad to me. I guess i just wasnt feeling it.

I also think the Yoda fight in 2 was better and ended on a better note.
I won tickets to a screening of this when it first came out so the theatre was full. When Yoda came out everyone clapped and cheered. You (probably) don't get reactions like that anymore. The last few times I've been to the theaters it's been just a handful of people.
