Pretty much. If I was running a movie studio I would just hand people like Aster all the money.

I am guessing I wouldn't make any profits, but I would probably really like the movies.
He feels like he is on the Paul Thomas Anderson deal with A24. We don't care if your movies make no money at all, just keep making them.
I do wonder if that will continue to be the case. Hereditary and Midsommar profited about 100M combined for them, but Beau and Eddington seem to be gearing up to be big losers. Obviously I hope it continues, but I am guessing they do want some money back on these at some point.

Yeah if I am A24, I tell him he needs to return to horror.

Listening to him in interviews, my impression is that was never what he really wanted to do in the first place, or definitely not the only thing. Horror is just a genre where it's much easier to get a movie greenlight for a newer filmmaker.

Hes had a shell script for Eddington years before Hereditary and wanted to do a western/dark comedy but it never worked out. During covid while editing Beau he reworked it to incorporate his idea of setting it in 2020. There is a good interview on a recent episode of The Big Picture, and I am pretty sure he said that of his next 3-4 ideas one is a horror movie.

Now I remember - he said he had an idea of a sort of sequel to Eddington, a horror movie, and a sci-fi movie that he hinted was some sort of adaptation swirling in his head.

Even more importantly to people like @Andy Dufresne his production company is involved with getting other a24 movies off the ground and is a part of movies like the upcoming Yorgos film Bugonia. It looks like he was producer on several movies that has come out in the last couple years - Dream Scenario, Death of a Unicorn, Rumours, and Sasquatch Sunset. I have only heard of the first one all look to be bizarre movies.

I believe someone here (Dan?) saw Sasquatch Sunset and said it wasn't bad. Ari's track record with producing isn't that hot either.

I get that but I would think at some point the studio would want to stop losing money on his films. Maybe they are getting enough back through streaming rights that they aren't as big of a loss as they seem but it sure looks bad when you see a $35-$50 million budget onm Beau is Afraid and it made $12 at the box office. Eddington was $25 and has made $4 so far. That just seems unsustainable.

Yeah, and I don't know what the answer is. Obviously I like what he brings to the table and how his mind works about movies. I said elsewhere in the last couple years I could listen to him and Bill Hader talk about movies all day. They have Tarantino-esque encyclopedic knowledge about movies, but for movies that I like and click with. They geek out about weird Japanese movies and stuff like The Brood instead of spaghetti westerns and Blaxploitation flix. I don't see many of those movies making much money if any at all, but obviously I am all for studios trying to get those weird voices on screen.

It does seem like a lot of his movies end up on Prime, so I wonder if part of the process is even if they don't make money in theaters they still get green lit more than we might think because they could find their niche audiences in that format?

Rumours looked interesting and has Cate Blanchett in it, so I might give that one a try. I still can't do Nic Cage movies so I have avoided Dream Scenario so far despite seeing Aster's name attached to it.

Highly recommend Sasquatch Sunset

to be fair I was pretty high when I watched it but I found it entertaining. just be prepared there’s like no talking in the entire movie. It’s like watching a National Geographic movie without a narrator

I would also contend Beau is Afraid and Eddington are both awful names for movies. That surely didn't help matters.
I would counter that Hereditary is not a great name for a movie either. Horror has a dedicated built in crowd that will largely see just about anything though. A 3 hour Beau is a tough sell, and I think everybody involved probably knew a movie in 2025 largely about covid/Floyd protests would be a pretty hard sell as well.

Maybe, I kind of like Hereditary as a horror title. But yeah they had to know Eddington would struggle at the box office. Hoping for big awards buzz down the road? But then why release in the summer? Not sure what the process is there.

I was going to ask how many edibles were involved.

There's no way I watch Beau - everyone who sees it says it's 3 hours of how it feels to have anxiety. No thanks.

Yeah, that's about what it is, and it's sort of broken up into different scenes or situations that represent a different type of fear or anxiety. Aster had a very weird and dark sense of humor.

I would not recommend it Not for any anxiety or anything but just because it makes no sense and It’s just not good. I didn’t care for it at all.

Apollo 13 will be rereleased exclusively in IMAX on September 19, 2025.

Sadly, Happy Gilmore 2 was predictable Sandler slop. Obviously the original was no piece of great art....but I'm guessing they wrote the script for this one in about 11 minutes. Plenty of cameos and I actually think the real golfers that were in it did pretty well (Using Zalitoris like that was a home run) but overall pretty awful. The ending "competition" was about as cringe-worthy as it gets.

Again....not a shock......every "comedy" he's made for the past 15+ years has been total trash.....but I guess I held out a LITTLE hope that he might be able to re-capture a LITTLE magic for this one. No dice.

If I may retort - it wasn't as good as the original. It was really dumb...And also very funny. I laughed a lot.

I mean - if you like Sandler's dumb comedies (and who doesn't) - then I don't understand why you wouldn't like this.

I was expecting it to be much worse so I was happy through the first two thirds of the movie but the last third was bad. That said I was expecting much worse and was entertained enough to recommend watching it to others.

If Gilmore 2 came out as not a sequel, basically was the first in the series, I would have not liked it as much.

It being the sequel bumped it up for me. Great movie, not even close. Did I laugh at parts absolutely.

I enjoyed it.

Nicklaus asking for lemonade ice tea made me laugh more than it should

Just saw the cast of Nolan's The Odyssey coming 2026. My goodness. Please be good.
It's Nolan, it will be good!
He certainly has a strong track record but going to ancient Greece feels like a big leap for him. I hope it pays off though, it's important to have good filmmakers making unique movies and them being critically respected, loved by the general public and raking in big profits. He's one of the rare people in Hollywood who can make a claim for satisfying all three of those areas. It is kind of funny though him tackling The Odyssey as it's basically the Marvel comics of it's time. I was tempted to make a joke about it being another lame IP movie.

I mostly agree, although there were a few scenes that made me laugh pretty good. The ending golf sequence was pretty dumb, though.

Spoilers for anyone who is still going to watch Happy Gilmore 2...

but I did like that they flipped the Shooter character and put him and Happy on the same team and gave him a bit of redemption rather than making him the cartoonish villain that the early stages of the film teased he would be.

I watched The Vanishing last night. The 1988 Dutch version (Dutch title is "Spoorloos"). Holy crap, has anyone ever seen this? It's available to stream on Criterion Channel and they have a 1 week free preview if you want to watch it for free. Great movie.

I've talked about this one several times on this board as probably the most terrifying movie I've ever seen, one I'm glad I watched and never want to see again.

Yep, fantastic movie. There are a few scenes that stand out to me starting with the tunnel.

Is @Nipsey going start pimping the Criterion Channel around here too? :gang1:

We watched Happy Gilmore 2 tonight and enjoyed it. At the end my wife said "I'm not a fan of Adam, but like both Gilmores and the first grown-ups"

Not sure what you all thought you were going to watch, but it had plenty of :lmao: moments.

Loved John Daly's role as well.

Me. I don't like his comedies at all. But I do like him. I just find zero value in his "comedies". Just painful for me to watch.

Watched two fairly recent films the last couple of of days.

1. Heads Of State. Idris Elba and John Cena as the UK's PM and the POTUS. I think they were going for satire here, but kept pulling back and wouldn't fully commit to it. As a straight action movie, it's fairly tame. It's fine for what it is, but don't expect a lot.

2. Nobody. I'm a big Odenkirk fan, so take my comments with a grain of salt. I really enjoyed this one. You have to hand-wave away some dead-end plot points and ride with it. You can tell Odenkirk had a blast making this (I think his production company was involved). Christopher Lloyd was an absolute maniac

Also watched Happy Gilmore 2 over the weekend. Pretty much what I expected. Some nostalgic call backs and great cameos. If you liked the first, worth watching just for that, and if there is nothing else on. Some good laughs, very predictable though. Not the worst movie I've seen.

My watches this weekend: The rare sequel only double feature, Jaws 2 and Happy Gilmore 2. I don't mind Jaws 2. Of course, nowhere near the original, but it is fun in a stand alone way. Happy Gilmore 2... well I laughed at everything Jon Lovitz said which was 2% of the movie.

Re: Jaws 2

It's been a good long while, but I recall the teenagers being so incorrigible that I ended up rooting for the shark
