I really didn't like any of the "X" movies. Green Knight was a lot of nothing.

And I just couldn't stand Midsommar at all.
They do lean dark and bleak with their movies, and that doesn't seem like your typical choice in film. Of the ones i listed above The Farewell is one I'd recommend to you. Maybe After Yang, but i honestly dont remember the full movie, mostly that it had one of my favorite openings to a movie.
After Yang was pretty dull. Maybe that was just Colin Farrell.
That was my gut feeling as i typed. I remember loving the start and the idea, but that it might have tapered off as it went.

Have you or others seen Locke? Again its been awhile. I remember really liking it and thought it was much better than expected for a movie that is just a dude in his car.
I haven't but Tom Hardy is cool and the description sounds intriguing. I'll check that out sometime.

Andy's post does make sense and maybe it was more empathy but I did feel like there was some infatuation involved.
I did too. I mean she was beautiful. Of course to me she's an actress playing a robot and to the character she is just a robt but I can see where the attraction stemmed from. And the empathy like Andy said.
It was there for sure. It's been a bit, but didn't he design her a bit with Caleb's search (porn?) history in mind? I took Andy's post to mean that the falling in love part wouldn't be necessary for the outcome of the movie to be the same since it was also very much pushing those empathy buttons.
Yeah, you can't discount completely the attraction factor. Let's be honest, you'll forgive a bad driver more readily if she's hot than if she's an uggo.
Yes “pretty privilege” is a very real thing

Tell me about it. I get away with all sorts of ****. ;)

I still haven't see the bolded, and never heard of Warfare.
Warfare just came out (couple months ago). I rented it, was an alright war movie. It was not Hollywood and directed by one of the SEALs that was actually involved in the action so it was about as true to the actual happenings as you're going to get. As with most war movies, it's difficult to identify the players but by the end you get the gist of it. If you're a Jocko fan, he had the guys on his podcast to go over the event. The group of SEALs involved in the action were the ones who relieved Jocko's group in Ramadi.
Black Hawk Down also had some involvement from a Ranger who was in Mogadishu for the firefight. A guy I went to HS with was one of the main characters (played by an actor, not him) and he served as a consultant to the film. He actually went on to consult for a few other war movies.

It's just nice that somebody is out there making original concept works and willing to 1) take chances, and 2) give a broader spectrum of artists a voice. It's not banking it's future on establishing the next franchise to shove down our throats for 20 years. Yeah, they have a fair share of "misses", but, a lot of those are just meant for a micro-audience rather than Joe Moviegoer anyway. They've proven you can be successful even with a batting average in the .200s. The big studios should learn something from that.
I kept thinking that the whole time I was watching Dead Unicorn. It's not a great movie but at least it 1. isn't another freaking remake and 2. not a copy of a theme that's been done to death.

Heh well, to be fair, I watched the A24 film Opus last weekend, in which John Malkovich invites a bunch of people to a desert compound and horror and ironic comeuppances ensue, and we did comment that a fair share of movies recently have had that structure... "some random group of people are gathered at a remote location and get what they deserve"... The Menu, Death of a Unicorn, Opus, A Murder at the End of the World, etc... maybe all the execs are chasing The Traitors vibes lol
This was one way to make movies during Covid.

On Hulu I added Locked the other day as well. Looks like Pennywise gets trapped in an SUV with Hopkins running the show and messing with him? I thought it looked interesting enough to add to the queue for a WTF watch one night. Could make a good double feature - Locke and Locked.

My discgolf buddy set me up with his Plex account and holy moly guacamole does this guy movie hard! Dude must have thousands of films and docs and TV series on this thing. What a gift!

Last night, my old man came over and along with my oldest son, we watched the original Dirty Harry. Can't believe I've never seen it before and even though I knew some of the famous tag-lines and had a general idea of what it was, I was pretty enthralled by it. Dean Wormer plays the mayor, that's fun! Had some gratuitous nudity which is always a plus and the bad guy was really really creepy.

And, I learned just now that Eastwood's cop partner also played Sloppy Poppie on Seinfeld.

I finally got around to watching Presence. I am a big Soderbergh fan and enjoy clever camera movement and long takes so it's like this movie was made for me. The voyeuristic camera gimmick worked most of the time although it affected pacing and made the blocking of some scenes with a lot of characters seem a little awkward. It's not really horror which was OK by me; the ghost story was intriguing and I especially liked the way the film gradually revealed the family dynamics.

I never got around to my view on Presence - I thought the watch was OK but after it was over I liked it more and it stuck in my head for days, so it was effective that way.

Based on the review and hype, Weapons is a must see in the theaters ASAP.

Weapons is the follow-up from the director of Barbarian. It sounds like it's sort of Magnolia as a horror film in the sense there isn't a main protagonist but it follows a bunch of different characters in sometimes and someties not intersectig plot lines. The general plot is all the kids but 1 from an elementary class disappear over night.

Watched the Billy Joel documentary. Two parts, 2 1/2 hours each. It was very good. The guy has had an amazing life. Up and down like everyone else, but amazing nonetheless.

Might see that tonight or tomorrow while on vacation in OC MD. Floppinha already heard of it and is in.

Yes that was his first movie, this is his follow-up. Zach Cregger is the writer-director.

Oh sorry, I haven't seen it yet. I was just saying it's a must for me. It's getting exceptional reviews but then again so did Barbarian so I don't know where that leaves you.

Incendies - slow but wow

Has Villanueve ever made a bad movie? Guy is an artist. Such great shots and sound with him. I don’t really like Arrival but it wasn’t “bad” and I had in my overrated list. One I need to revisit

A few I still need to watch by him, his older stuff Malestrom and polytechnique

Oh blade runner 2049 kinda sucked too

My answer is no he hasn't. For my tastes I wish he would go back more original material, but he seems now to be stuck in the cycle of doing franchise movies. Blade Runner sequel, 3 Dune movies, now Bond. I much prefer the Incendies, Prisoners, Sicario, and Arival run before it.

It was one of my favorite movie experiences in the last few years, but I get that it gets a bit much toward the end, especially the very end of the movie (Kool-Aid Man).

I agree Arrival is overrated but still a good movie. I did not like Enemy but it wasbn't awful. Blade Runner 2049 is slow but I do think the look and sound of it is enough to get me coming back for more. So yeah, he rocks.

I recall some decent tension building, and rhen finding the whole premise silly. It looked good i guess.

Another four 21st century movies

  • The Master (2012)- Brilliant craft here from PTA. Phoenix deserved a Best Actor Oscar. Phillip Seymour Hoffman a best supporting actor award. But to me it's like this extremely fancy meal at a Michelin star restaurant where the chef is using multiple challenging techniques, everything is very refined, the presentation is immaculate but I walk away unsatisfied. It lacks depth of flavor, it doesn't all come together and I'm still hungry. The questions it wrestles with of subservience, is man beast or divine, the BS of ideologies, etc. don't resonate for me here. Not because I think they are boring ideas but because in the movie they are explored but I am not sure anything is actually found. It was my second time watching it and likely my last.

  • Mother (2009)- Don't worry this is the Bong Joon Ho movie, not the one with Jennifer Lawrence about who knows what. Another rewatch for me but this was a rewatch I thoroughly enjoyed. I don't care for when Bong does sci-fi stuff but when he gets into his grimy crime thriller stuff, it's just awesome. This is a neo-noir take on the detective movie. Instead of following a cop, we follow a mother who's intellectually disabled son has been accused of a grizzly murder. The cops have it as an easy open and shut case so she takes it upon her hands to play detective and find the real killer. If you like Fincher or Hitchcock, I think this one is for you. It's available on Prime, check it out.

  • In Bruges (2008)- My opinions on The Master and Mother didn't change on rewatch. My opinion on In Bruges did change though. I liked it less on 2nd watch. It's still funny, with some great twists. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson have such great chemistry together. But Martin McDonagh's dialogue, while often some of the best dark humor written, can get a little too uncomfortable with me. There's a too much racial stuff and all the stuff about the little people is weird. Maybe I am getting soft but I don't have the stomach for some of that anymore. I know these are bad people saying bad things but based on some of the other things McDonagh has written it often feels like he goes out of his way to bring race into things. There isn't a single Black character in the whole movie so why in the world is there so much discussion of Black people? It's still a darkly funny and suspenseful thriller, I just dropped my rating a 1/2 star.

  • The Theory of Everything (2014)- Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Yeah Redmayne's performance is good. Everything else is cookie cutter Hollywood biopic stuff. Felt way too formulaic. It's not bad, it's just boring. I would only recommend this to people who are very interested in Stephen Hawking. I wasn't before and am definitely not now.

I did some 21st century rewatches and thinking as well. I watched Ford v Ferrari last night, and Knives Out this morning. My daughter I and are on dinner break, and are currently 1/2 way through Rogue One. We need to get that done so I can catch the Ichiro # retirement if they show that on MLB before the game tonight.

Not sure if I posted, but recently I watched Moneyball again as well. I was thinking about watching that with her, but I wasn't sure if she'd be interested. She did ask about FvF though, which was a reason I was revisiting that one.

Wife took us to freakier friday today.
Gets a little confusing at times to remember who switched with who, but overall lots of  moments.
3.5 out of 5

There are some scenes from Incendies that sure stick with me.

I didn't know these were two different movies - I've been putting off watching this one because of the weird stuff I heard about the other one.

Anyways, I decided to be helpful and watch a movie to let KP and 80s know a movie NOT to include in their 21st century countdown -Wet Hot American Summer

I clicked on it only knowing that it was a comedy and somehow has a 75% score on RT. It has a 39% critic score which is still too much. At first, I thought this was just a poorly written comedy (I guess it still is) but it's an absurdist parody so I guess if you are into things like that then you might like it. TBF, I chuckled a few times so I guess there's some redeeming value? 5.0 for effort

This also spawned 2 shows on netflix. Have no clue why.

an artsy star wars? pass I've seen Arrival and don't need to see it again.
No, an amazingly shot, well-acted Star Wars with great action. Have you seen Dune or Sicario? Im not sure what is "artsy" about those. (Or Arrival for that matter).

When I jokingly use that phrase or see it used my mind goes to directors like Malick, PTA, Von Trier, Kubrick, or Aronofsky. Weird camera angles, overly ambiguous plots, long takes, things like that. IMO artsy sci-fi would be titles like 2001, Solaris, The Fountain, and I am assuming Under the Skin.

I had a similar reaction - with the people involved, I was expecting a little funnier.

I will repeat this in a few weeks, as we put our finishing touches on our lists and expect to start it fairly soon. For me, a list of 100 movies in 25 years was MUCH harder to tackle and narrow down than our submission of 70 albums for doc. I literally grabbed one of my notebooks and went through each one of THESE pages on wikipedia, from 2000-2024. I wrote down any title I saw that I remember liking enough to rewatch, recommend to customers when I ran the stores, or would recommend to the FFA. All 7/10 or higher type of movies in my rating (which is a bit odd, I admit). Just that was probably 500-600 titles. THEN I looked at lists of horror movies because I love those and watch a lot of those and wrote down probably another 50-75 (many did show up on those lists above because they are foreign or a lot release direct to dvd or streamers). THEN I looked through foreign language movies and wrote down another 50-60 there. You get the idea. There are going to be so many "I can't believe this isn't on the list!" type comments that I am probably going to agree with and is a movie I have written down in this notebook I am looking at (I am working on my 41st-50th ranked movies this morning)

In the end, I decided to not stress about it too much and approached it much like I did the album countdown. I am going desert island style and trying to build a collection of 100 movies that I would love to have on my shelf from that era and it will have something for anybody who is at my house (hopefully). These are movies I own already, that made me cry or laugh a lot, that made me fall for foreign language movies, genuinely surprised or that I have enjoyed watching with my family the most. My weird tastes and quirks are represented (no Marvel and few action movies, for example) but when we are talking an average of only 4 movies/year there are going to be a ton of great movies not showing up on our collective countdown. I'd expect we have less crossover than our lists that focused on one decade, so in the end we probably will have 160 or so movies and hopefully people will find a handful of movies they will discover because of it. Like the album countdown, this is all about the discussion and love of movies.

What I do plan to do as we get to about 75-50 or so in the countdown and get to movies high on our individual lists or ones we agreed on is like doc did in the album countdown reveal mini lists of movies with fun (to me at least) categories. [ if @Ilov80s thinks this is a fun idea too, of course ] When I went through I saw themes, actors, and directors pop up on my lists. Many of them are the ones I did each week about a month ago. I wrote ideas on the margins from Ryan Gosling movies to crappy families to time travel to best movies with worst titles to my most uncomfortable watches. Things like that to have fun and provide even more suggestions for people.

The Way Way Back and My Old *** are perfect examples of movies I really love that are not going to make the cut when I have to hack this to 100. (sorry for the 2 spoilers) I have been pretty tight lipped about some of my reviews and feelings this summer that will probably show up and have been dropping titles and suggestions like those two of the type of movies that I love but when I have to cut 500 will get left out of my "collection"

@KarmaPolice @BLOCKED_PUNT In regards to Wet Hot American Summer, I know you both didn't care for it. My 17 year old wants to watch it with me. She had it highlighted as a summer movie she's interested in. I am not worried about the quality but just content. Is it going to be too uncomfortable to watch with her? I am not worried about her seeing or hearing anything, I just don't want to watch a movie that's just dirty sex jokes and naked women and totally crude. A little bit of that is fine, we enjoyed Fast Times together. I just don't want to cross into Porky's territory.
