Thanks For Sharing 6.5/10

Up In The Air 8.5/10

This Is Where I Leave You 7/10

The Judge 8.5/10

Obvious Child 6/10

Zodiac 8/10

Labor Day 9/10
Labor Day was the best of this bunch?
:lmao: For me yes, but probably because I knew nothing about it going in and was shocked how good it was. Maybe I was just feeling very sappy that day.
Fair enough. Haven't seen it, just busting your balls a bit. I have seen Zodiac a few times now and am believing mote and more that it is Fincher's best and one of the best of the 00s. Also really liked Up in the Air. Anna Kendrick =

Saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Friday night. Eh. 7/10.

Saw Nightcrawler last night. 95% on Rotten Tomatoes? Huh. I dunno, Gyllenhall (sp.?) was terrific/spooky/creepy as all getup, but the movie itself? 7/10.
Wouldn't 7/10 be a movie that you liked? Seems like you didn't care for either of these.
That's the inherent problem of the 10 point scale

because it doesn't go to 11?

i'm with jamny though- to me, 7/10 is a really good movie, not a "meh" movie. for meh, I'd go 4 or 5/10.

this is the same for women... people are always talking about 9s and 10s- but IMO, those are otherworldly beauties that are insanely rare like this. 7s and 8s are the super hot girls that you get to actually, but only occasionally, see around town.

The Imitation Game - 8/10

The metaphors could have been heavy handed but were not. I appreciated that.

I haven't seen The Theory of Everything yet but I can't imagine Redmayne's performance was better than Cumberbatch's.

I understand that it's rife with historical inaccuracies but the spirit of the events is still maintained, IMO. It's not billed as a documentary, after all. Which is the same leeway that I gave to The Social Network (although the inaccuracies there are much worse, I think).
I saw both and don't see this that at all. Cumberbatch was playing character that showed little range of emotion.

I give the movie 7/10, it got really slow in some parts.
I think it was more subtle than you give it credit for. Cumberbatch's performance is nuanced to show a man living with a secret. Just because he's not flailing about or drooling on himself doesn't mean it's not a strong performance.
The most nuanced Oscar goes to Wilson, the volleyball that was really deflated on the inside. ;)
I thought Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels were very nuanced in Dumber and Dumbesterer, they were robbed of co-oscars! :)

exactly. Hard to get a bead on people's ratings in here. I would think that 5/10 would be a middle of the road movie, and one that underwelms someone would be a 4/10. We need a universal rating system for the thread!!

Haven't seen Labor Day yet but it doesn't look awful. However, I am skeptical of your ratings after seeing The Judge with 8.5.
Too high?
Yeah, I didn't like it much. Parts were good, but thought it was too long and formulaic.
I love Downey, but really would like to see him not be smarmy guy in a movie now.
If you haven't already you should check out A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. He still brings the smarm but tones it down a lot.

My ratings are like the offdee scale - if it's under 6 you don't want to watch it.

but a 6 is an above average movie...

Do you ever give 2s or 3s?

Tropic Thunder might be his best character in a long while.

"I'm the dude, playing the dude, playing the dude..."

Zombeavers - Bill Burr and John Mayer are the best part of this movie and they are only in the opening and closing scenes. Stuff happens in the middle that kept me entertained enough. I give it a normal scale 6/10 (just above meh). It wasn't quite Tucker and Dale level satire.

For sure, and forgot about that one.

Although they are enjoyable, seems he has been rehashing the same guy in every movie lately, and I think he is a better actor than that.

10 is a perfect movie that accomplishes everything it set out to do (like Kingsman)

9 is nearly perfect, might have had one minor flaw

8 is a borderline great movie, with a few minor flaws

7 is a good movie but a few flaws

6 to me is watchable, but with serious flaws

5 is a bad movie, but may have a some scenes worth watching

4 is terrible, but might have a hot chick and/or cool effects (Transformers/Pacific Rim type)

3 or less would be a movie with no redeeming qualities

Could you give me an example of each?

I started Kingsman and turned it off about 30mins in when they started the training. May continue later, but meh.

IMO- 10 is perfect on all fronts... not perfect for attempting something and succeeding. If it's not trying to do much... it's not trying to do much- so lower grade. my favorite movies- Wings of Desire, 7 Samurai, The Third Man, Dr. Strangelove... I'd put those up there as 10s. 7 Samurai for sure.

I think I am with this, but with a little bit of my favorites sprinkled in, so I am sure that up and down my rankings it is a little inconsistent.

For me:

10/10 - One of the best movies ever. Some of them would be genre specific too. SO I would have movies like Psycho, Boogie Nights, and Back To the Future up there. Basically my top 30 or so movies of all time.

9/10 - Excellent movie. Maybe not best ever, but more like best of the decade. Movies like Eternal Sunshine, City of God, or Sweet Hereafter would be here.

8/10 - Great movie. Not best of decade, but would be on a list of best of the year. This could be anything from Pulp Fiction to The Lego Movie.

7/10 - Good movie. I really enjoyed it, would watch it a few more times, but not best of the year. 21 Jump Street

6/10 - Above average movie - I liked it, and would probably watch it again if it was on HBO or something - Pitch Perfect

5/10 - Average movie - liked it, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again - Guardians of the Galaxy

4/10 - Below average movie - I personally didn't like it, but I would probably still recommend it to people that I think would dig it more. Pacific Rim

3/10 - Bad movie, but I was able to get through it. Wouldn't recommend to people. The Happening

2/10 - Crap movie, but I FF to a least see what happens - GI Joe

1/10 - Total #### - I couldn't even be bothered to finish it. Tammy or Into the Storm

I think a lot of movies fall into the 6/10-7/10 range for me, especially movies in the horror, rom-com, or comedy genres as I don't elevate many of those into a "best of the year" category.

My ratings match up perfectly with this. 5 is exactly middle of the road, average, meh.

Don't get scales like cstu did.

Yeah- I might quibble with which movies are placed where- but overall I pretty much agree (although 10s to me are all-timers, not genre specific... those can be put in the 9s and 8s)

Pitch Perfect!??! You couldn't pick a better example?

I haven't seen it so maybe I'm off.
6s and 7s are a sweet spot for me more "guilty pleasure" type movies. You don't like that one? I think The Fast and the Furious movie would be something in that 6 range too - decent action flick. Being a little silly with the movies I listed and probably wasn't the best representation of movies in my post.

Such as?

I don't think I have seen nearly the amount of classics that you have, so that might be a reason my 10s are sprinkled with other movies. I guess I figure even if it isn't winning any awards or anything, if I consider something an all-timer in a genre, that has to count for something. If I think Die Hard is the best action movie ever or Halloween is the best horror movie, I think that should be in the running for a 10. But yeah, mostly would be movies from Hitchcock, Kubrick, etc..

Who came up with this tagline for San Andreas?

Taglines: A rescue pilot survived an earthquake, this is what happens next
Don't waste your money
Is it that bad? Looks like a good summer action flick, but then that's what the previews are supposed to do.

:goodposting:

It is DisaterPorn.. If it isn't your thing then stay away..

Myself.. I'll be grabbing a big Tub of  and sitting back to enjoy the ride

I just assumed it would be Day Afrer Tomorrow or 2012 level bad.
And...?...I don't know why anyone would spend $ to see it in the theater, but I will be sure to watch it on dvd or HBO and laugh at it?

Day after tomorrow tried to be too serious for a DisasterPorn movie and thus failed on multiple levels..

But 2012 was a great fun ride.. Loved it in the Theater.. We own the DVD and have watched it numerous times..

It is one of those Disaterporn movies that never took itself too serious.. Limo Jumping, RV jumping and don't forget Woody Harrelson's Hilarious character..

From what I've read from the Critics, they placed this slightly above 2012 so I am all in for this afternoons fun  ride

I honestly don't typically pay to see this stuff in theaters but occasionally I want to see what California would look like sliding off the continental shelf into the Pacific Ocean and when I have a hankering for that I am all over films like 2012, Day After Tomorrow, The Core (one of my very favorite disaster films and IMO highly underrated), Armageddon and, yes, San Andreas. And I don't watch them to laugh at them either, frankly I really don't like that attitude because if you expected anything other than what films like these deliver then the problem is with your expectations not the films.

I feel like I just got scolded by my parents.

I get what you are saying. Sure, I have liked a few as well, but sorry, most are pretty bad so I end up watching for the funny lines and the sometimes apocalyptic pseudo-science. Just like anything else, there can be a huge difference in quality in the disaster genre - it can go from something like Perfect Storm/Armageddon to crap like Into the Storm. To me, stuff like Day After Tomorrow and 2012 fall in the middle. The good ones for me have a combo of decent actors and decent effects. Middle of the road ones have one or the other, and the bottom ones have neither. Also the good ones for me stay away from the "we are ruining the planet, so this is what is in store for us" crap too. My expectations for San Andreas is the middle category. You know me and GCI, so I think while the Rock has charisma to elevate the movie I think the f/x will fall short for me (and it might dip into the preachy stuff too).

Any genre or subgenre has the ability to put out good movies. I will never subscribe to the "it is just a ________ movie, what do you expect" line of thinking.

Berberian Sound Studio

What the #### did I just watch? OK, it's obvious I just watched a tribute to Italian horror master Dario Argento. This is an expertly made thriller. But I won't be the only one wondering where the last 15 minutes of this movie went. Very abrupt finish.

Ultimately I don't disagree with you. There are plenty of crap movies in any genre, which is why I don't go to the theaters to watch many films.

Watch The Core. Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo & Bruce Greenwood. It may be my favorite disaster movie.

It has Alexandra Daddario it's a must see
Well ####, i didn't know that..
she runs a lot, leans over for a nice tease and goes all wet tshirt near the end :excited: And for a Disasterporn movie it was well worth watching.. much, MUCH better then Day after tomorrow .. IMO inline with 2012..

As for "disasterporn".. watch for the effects/action forget the plot ..

you know, much like watching porn.. not that I'd know what a pornography movie is like or why people watch it. ;)

Only Lovers Left Alive.

Not missing much if you pass. But if you like anything vampire-related was interesting. Jarmusch, T. Swinton, T. Hiddleston. Kind of a slow drawl but I dug it.

6/10

Jodoworsky's Dune

Documentary about an avant garde director who tried to make Frank Herbert's Dune in the 70s. This guy Jodoworsky is a nut, he made this movie called El Topo which is like Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi if he was on acid. Dune was an ambitious effort - he had Giger doing the art, Orson Welles and Salvador Dali agreed to be in it apparently. Some say it went beyond what Lucas ever tried to do in terms of effects as well.

Great doc, I'll probably watch it a few more times. It has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes which is how I found it

5/5

Critics Consensus: Part thoughtful tribute, part bittersweet reminder of a missed opportunity, Jodorowsky's Dune offers a fascinating look at a lost sci-fi legend.

caught the pilot episode of the cinemax program "Banshee" on Amazon Prime. it's not good at all. it makes me appreciate the old Fx show "The Riches" all the more.
