Watched The Departed for the first time in quite a while. Enjoyed it but on re-watching it really struck me how badly Scorcese deals with the passage of time in this movie. It's either confusing or clumsy and obvious. Don't know why I didn't pick up on it before. Also, the female character is awful and shallow. In fact, most of the characters are pretty damn shallow. Even DiCaprio, who is the most developed character, seems more caricature than character at times. The movie is a fun watch but I definitely get the criticism that it wasn't Best Picture/Best Director worthy.
I love this movie in every way, so I'll refrain from arguing with you :hifive:
Even the elevator scene at the end? That was the weak point for me.
Loved it

Just pretend Tarantino wrote it and it will be ground breaking.

Or just be a true movie lover and watch the original. ;)

Interstellar 4.5/5

I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. Long movie that didn't feel as long as it was. Drawbacks for me were the ending and the Matt Damon character.

The Gift 4/5

Intense and entertaining with an interesting plot twist, but nonsensical character decisions or lack therefore brought it down a notch.

Not saying it's a perfect movie.

I wasn't 100 on board with it up to this point, but I thought everything after the wormhole was garbage.

The Specialist

Haven't seen this in years. A terrible Sylvester Stallone movie with James Woods, Sharon Stone, Eric Roberts, and Rod Steiger. So much to laugh at here: Why is Rod Steiger playing a Hispanic character? Why does Sharon Stone walk like an 8 year old girl trying to look cool? But let me say this: There are few actors that can be both menacing and funny - and James Woods is one of them. The guy always delivers a great performance.
Salvador was his pinnacle

Snowpiercer - 4/5

This one surprised me in a good way. I hadn't heard much about it. There is a drastic cooling of the earth. Most life dies out. The remainder of humanity is confined to a small continuously moving train which circumnavigates the earth.

It has some pretty good twists.
I posted a thread about it and liked it so much it's one of the few movies I've seen more than once.
You seem so passionate about movies - this does not compute. Care to unpack this a bit more?
I'm referring to recently released movies. Unless a movie is incredible or I feel like I missed things the first time, I won't watch it again for a long time. Too many new movies coming out all the time (I probably see 200+ a year).
I'm with you on this, but we are in the minority in here

Angel Heart - 6.5/10

Eh. It was okay I guess. DeNiro's villain was more cartoonish than menacing.

The film noir visual elements were pretty cool though.
i think of it as one of those films that fits the era when it was made. while it looks good and is full of *atmosphere*, i guess, it is a mostly dumb script, indulgent directing and mugging for the cameras.
this was the one where me and my friends realized Mickey Rourke wasn't the next coming of Brando, and was just a hack.

oh.

and Lisa's Bonets.
He's well above-average. Pope of Greenwich Village was his pinnacle.

A Streetcar Named Desire - 10/10

Whoa, what a movie! It wasn't what I expected at all and I loved it.

Vivien Leigh is incredible (as is Brando, of course). It could have come across as too much of a stage performance or even campy/melodramatic, but it's controlled and amazing.

Blanche DuBois might be the most tragic character I've ever seen in a movie.

It's almost a horror movie toward the end.

There's just nothing to criticize in this movie. It's perfect.
STELLA!!!11!

Yeah that got a bit ridiculous. Whenever a movie messes with time travel it tends to trip over itself.

Watched a couple Manhattan movies that I was hoping I would like more than I did:

The Seven Year Itch:

I have really liked most of Wilder's movies so far, and one of my favs was Some Like it Hot where I just adored Marilyn in that role. I found this one to be a bit repetitive and dull. I think a lot had to do with the start of the movie and just having Ewell talking to himself too much. I suspected that it was based on a play as I was watching it, as it really had that feel. The movie depended on the chemistry of the leads, which I thought was non-existent. Couple fun or iconic moments, but mostly meh. 5/10

Manhattan:

Only seen a handful of Woody's movies, and I think have only really liked one so far (Annie Hall). This one was more of the usual: ome great scenes, some witty dialogue, but I think I find his movies too exhausting to really enjoy. After awhile the rapid-fire, too-witty dialogue gets tiring and I feel takes away from the more honest feelings and ideas at their core. This was one of the better I have watched, but I think after a handful of movies I am putting him in the Wes Anderson camp for directors - I appreciate what they do, I just don't enjoy it much. 6/10

Sicario

Best movie I've seen this year. Works on several levels as a political statement, a morality play, and a top shelf actioner.

Benecio del Toro gives a career performance, rising above his legendary smarmy charisma to possibly the best working actor in the world. Blount is good in an unrewarding role and josh Brolin is his typical badass self.

4.89/5 stars

Really wanted to see this last week. Think it'll be the next one I see.

Any Blue Ruin fans interested in investing in the lead's next film, shoot me a pm. In final negotiations signing on as a Co-producer. More details to follow, but the script is great and they've already begun shooting. Well be doing some meetings with the producer over the weekend to confirm c financial feasibility, but looking really good.

Avengers: age of ultron 3/5

I'll note that I was ridiculously tired when I watched it. But I was pretty underwhelmed and it was the first avengers movie where I couldn't really follow along with the storyline. Still entertaining, but definitely a step down.

The movie was absolutely brilliant. 2nd best movie of the year after Mad Max: Fury Road. Del Toro is simply awesome.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - 6/10

Like most Guy Ritchie movies (the first Sherlock movie being the exception) it's too much style, not enough substance, and the pacing runs in fits and jerks.

It couldn't decide what kind of film it wanted to be.

Didn't really like it.

Loved Lock, Stock and Snatch. Didn't care for the Sherlock movies. But this movie was different and better than Ritchie's recent failures. Not saying it's a great movie, but I liked the humor and art direction. I think it bodes well for future Ritchie efforts.

The Martian

Two thumbs way up. Loved it. Feels heavily marinated in real science and astrophysics. Entertaining from start to finish, and probably the best movie I've seen all year.

McFarland 3.5/5

I'm a sucker for feel-good sports movies. This delivered but fell short of the top plateau.

saw it too.

was pretty ok on it, but overall solid (well made, paced and acted). thought it was heavily formulaic (pitch: hey- instead of the shuttle or space-station, let's put Sandra Bullock on Mars... she's booked? ok.. how about Matt Damon?) and didn't get into any of the psychological aspects of being stranded on a planet... which would have made it "good" instead of "ok" for me. but yeah, it's well made and kinda fun and feel good, so

we saw it in 3d due to limited window for viewing for us. does not need to be seen in 3d

That's surprising.

Avengers: Age of Ultron -

I will admit that I had fun with it to a point, but I think that was mostly because my 9 year old was enjoying it so much. One of the first "big boy" movies that he has been able to get all the way through without anything bothering him (which was a surprise to me since it was a tad dark - esp with the visions Scarlet Witch gave them). Just thinking purely my enjoyment, I would say that it was slightly above average, and the only thing keeping it that way for me is Wheedon's ability to still have some great quiet moments with the characters and take the time to touch on all their story lines. Besides that, I found the action scenes to mostly be blah as we have the need to slow down the action so we can have our GCI heros pose for the camera. I really do hate it when movies do that, so I was grumbling about 5mins into the movie. Also thought the final battle was bland compared to the first Avengers movie. I think this one is in the bottom part of the Marvel movies for me. 5.5/10

Really excited for Captain America - Civil War next year, and although I am sad that Joss isn't doing the Avengers anymore, I am really glad that the guys behind the camera for Winter Soldier are doing the next Avengers movie. I still think Winter Soldier is easily the best Marvel movie so far.

I agree that it's formulaic. So was Gladiator.

I will buy into the formula if the script is really good, and this script was really good.

I'll agree to disagree on that. thought it was hokey and obvious.

Black Mass

Great performance from Johnny Depp, equally good performances from the secondary characters.

Not sure what it was I didn't like about this movie, but something was missing.

6/10

Sicario

Pretty intense at times. Would prefer to have seen someone come up with a movie that has the same cast and same intensity that was based on a true story, because I wouldn't be surprised if there were plenty of true life material to pull together to create a similar movie and story line. Another movie that seemed to just not quite pull together a complete satisfying finish.

7/10

So I'll be making a decision within 48 hours whether to invest in the film I mentioned a couple of days ago.

You guys uniformly loved Blue Ruin, right?

I think it was one of the best movies of the last few years that I have seen. Curious what the new project is about.

Once Upon A Time In America - 8/10

Good movie. Enjoyed it. Wouldn't watch again simply because of the length.

It's at least as good as The Godfather.

We need an in-house RT style system here now. That said, I think most posters expressed their appreciation for it. All 11 of us.
