Is The Nice Guys a Tipping point?

Heavily promoted.  Two apparent big leads.  Great reviews.  Box-office dude.

If I'm a studio head I wonder if I put Ice Cube in Crowe part does the film open much bigger.

Movie opened at 11mill.  Should have at least doubled that.

Barely a female fingerprint on the trailers either.

 
Saw two movies:

Keanu

I am not a big fan of Key and Peele's TV show, but I laughed hard several times watching this movie. Two thumbs way up.

Captain America: Civil War

The end was a little anti-climactic, but this movie is cool in a way that Batman vs. Superman wasn't. Very entertaining. 

 
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is on one of the HBOs right now. It's been so long since I last saw it I had forgotten what a great cast it had.

great cast (Hiddleston, Irons, Seinna Miller) and source material (JG Ballard) with a very capable director (Ben Wheatley, "Kill List" and "Down Terrace") here. It's a throwback film in a lot of ways that is not going to be a hit for everyone. I thought it was loopy fun but those who joined me were not as amused.

dying to see this.

the book was really hard to find, but maybe my favorite of his. completely missed that they were making a film version until it came out.

love Ballard too. i got introduced to him via "Cocaine Nights" and it stuck. i really liked "Day of Creation". When I worked by the WTC, I used to hit the Strand Annex and grab books there.

it's sort of run-of-the-mill euro thriller. i liked it well enough but it's pretty straightforward.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit when it came out. Yeah- pretty straight forward at this point in the story and story-telling, plus Harrison being Harrison... but definitely worth watching. 

caveat- haven't seen it in a long time- wonder if it might be dated.

 
In 1977 OPM was the only 13 year old boy in America who disliked Star Wars because he thought it was boring and completely lacking in story structure and nuanced dialogue.

One of those movies where it takes a couple of viewing to really enjoy it... We saw it in the theater and thought it was good, but not as Great as the hype..

Daughter never got a chance to see it so bought the DVD and watched it last night and enjoyed it a lot more :thumbup:

Well written heist movie that has obviously had influence down through the ages, including the shotgun in the flower box from T2. Felt rather Tarantino-esque too.

I thought the fractured, non-linear narrative was the best thing about it (and Sterling Hayden), which was in the novel*, and intricate flashback structure seems like a clear influence on movies like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown.

* After some bad audience tests, the studio may have pressured Kubrick and his producer/partner to recut it in chronological sequence, which they started to do, but then thought, if we are going to go down in flames, let's at least do it with OUR film (similar to the back story of the making of 2112 by Rush). It didn't do great in its theatrical release, but it was a great success for getting Kubrick's foot in the door in Hollywood, leading to next projects like Paths of Glory, Spartacus (hired gun for Kirk Douglas based on the previous film, after firing Anthony Mann in the first week - Kubrick vowed never to take on another project in which he didn't have absolute creative control, but still an outstanding film for its genre that won like four Oscars), Lolita and Dr. Strangelove.

I think The Killing has been critically reappraised over the years, and has become a classic/minor masterpiece in Kubrick's canon.

 
wife wanted to see some teen apocalyptic thing called the Fifth Wave. I like teens. and I like apocalypse stuff. this, not so much. just terrible.

 
3:10 to Yuma (Bale and Crowe version)

i really enjoyed it accept the ending, didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me, I mean I get it but the final scene seemed odd

I watched this over the weekend and I agree with this. It seemed like it should've been better but the third act was ####.

 
I watched Fury over this past week.....twice.

I don't get the hate for this movie when it came out. I love this movie.....and Shia LaBeouf  who I get is a bit of an odd character in real life was amazing in this movie.  His performance was deserving of an academy award nomination.

 
  1. Neither I nor my kid (15) has seen any of the Fast and Furious movies.  Worth it?  If so, should we start from the very first one and then slog through them in order?  Or does it matter?  Skip any?

loaded question, IMO.

I've seen bits and pieces of a few of them and found them each completely idiotic, so didn't bother watching the rest or taking the time to watch the entire thing. and I like idiotic movies.

the people who have seen them all the way through and can comment on what order, etc will obviously have liked them well enough to have seen them all the way through... they'll obivously advise that they're worth it.

I love them all.  Completely pointless car chase scenes, action actors with nothing to do but give one liners and do fight scenes, the chicks are hot, the camera work is pretty good and they are just turn your brain off fun rides.

Unless you weren't being serious.  Because it appears my sarcasm meter is broken from another thread and I'm not communicating properly lately.

No, I was being completely serious.  Last night in my hotel I was flipping channels and came across the beginning of Furious Seven.  Watched for about 15 minutes before I had to go.  But made me think of this thread to ask if they were worth checking out.  Based on your comment we will try the first one the next time we are at loose ends for a movie to watch.

They are fun and I am sure the kid will have a blast with them.  Personally, I would consider skipping 2 and 3. 

 
Wow, I thought I was the one with the out of wack comedy meter.  A few of you guys seriously didn't find anything funny about Deadpool?

Very good film...that cast really seemed to have great chemistry.

7 was awesome and the ending was really good with Paul Walker.  Jason Statham is perfect for the series.

The scene at the dinner table didn't work and the final battle with Pitt trapped in the tank was uber stupid.

The Tiger tank battle was the the only good part.

I agree with this. 3 wasn't bad but the lead actor sucked.   If you plan on watching all of them you need to see 3 for the call backs in 7.

Hated these at first but now I love them.   Once they stopped taking things so "seriously" they hit their stride

As the numbers have gone up so have the "suspend belief" quota per movie..

But if you enjoy :popcorn: flicks than there not many that are much better then the F&F Series.

The 1st time I saw it was in the theater with my wife.. We both enjoyed it but I didn't quite get the hype for it... Then we bought the DVD so our daughter could watch it and there were so many funny moments I missed the first time through that it now has entered my "Must re-watch" group of movies :thumbup:
