I'm not a horror/gore movie fan.  Just not my cup of tea.  But as I posted a few pages ago I caught Saw and Saw 2 and they weren't awful, so with that thought in my head I actually watched Hostel 2 last night.

What a downright stupid movie.  People paid money to see this?

Have you seen Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions? If the beginning doesn't hook you, you can turn it
off. It slows down to build the story/characters then takes you for a ride. Suspense with some gore.

I didn't know what to expect when I sat down to watch Saw but it was generating all kinds of buzz at the time.  I gotta say that I really enjoyed it.  Not enough to watch Saw 2, which I still think is a solid decision by me.

I thought the first Hostel was terrible, literally nothing but 90 minutes of torture porn,  so I never bothered with any of the others.

Have only seen the first, but I liked the message it sent about how we exploit other people.  I get how people could boil it down to torture porn but I saw it as much more than that.

I am used to being in the minority on this one too, but I think Hostel > Saw.   I took Saw as a lesser version of Se7en.  Don't get me wrong, I do like some of them in the series (I seemed to like the even ones more).  Like cstu stated, I thought Hostel had a little bit more to say about people in general.  We have seen all the bad guys doing the bad things in countless movies, but the Hostel movies (only seen the first 2) took it to an interesting level with who was doing the bad things and why.  #2 is worse, but it does have an interesting gender switch and you follow a couple guys as they are visiting the Hostel to participate, and I liked that dynamic.  To me that was more interesting than anything in the Saw movies.

I've said it so many times before, but damn does the phrase "torture porn" annoy the hell out of me.  What does it even mean?  It seems like it is just a quick term to throw out there if a movie is gory and you didn't like it.  Been a little since I've seen it, but do we really see more than 3 deaths in Hostel? Hell the first 30-40 minutes play more like a college frat movie.  Just don't get it.

They might have been trying to make that message but I just couldn't view it on a level any deeper than its surface.

Because they show people being gratuitously tortured for 90 minutes and audiences eat it up. I think the average movie goer who chooses to see Hostel is not like you guys who view it on multiple levels and understand the nuance and message.  They are mouth breathers who become aroused by the superficial levels of the film.

Again, you probably see more deaths in the Saw movies and more consistently.  Are they torture porn too?

Maybe I am just a sick ******* or more of a fan of the slasher movies that I grew up with, but a lot of the fun of the genre was watching people get offed in various ways.  I don't think people were watching Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street movies for any deep message, they probably wanted to see some #### and the bad guy hacking up some teens.  I guess I just see these movies as an extension of that (hell, most horror movies as an extension of that urge).  Again, I watched a ton of stuff like Hellraiser that was probably just as bad 20 years ago, and usually think horror movies are saying something a little about human nature/fears/urges (probably more than the people making them intended ;) )

I get old granny who doesn't know better throwing the term around, but not people who like and get movies in general, or who seem to like horror movies.  Sorry, I grew up with horror movies and heavy metal - I have a chip on my shoulder from defending both for decades....

Definitely agree with the bolded about the sequels.   The originals of these movies had a message and weren't simply made to make people cringe.

Oh, for sure.  Just saying overall that has been an impulse and a reason for people to watch the genre.  It didn't start with Saw/Hostel and movies like that which seem to get the label the most.

great horror movie!
Yeah, It's Horror/Suspense/Mystery which is probably why it wasn't as big $$$
as it could have been. You go to look at movies by category and Event Horizon
and Alien will be SciFi and will be recommended watches while this gets pushed
out or down by Saw 57 -Retirement home revenge.

Interesting movie for sure, and couldn't get the character of Nix out of my head when seeing Kruger on Seinfeld.

Event Horizon is one that I recommend from that time as well.  Took a group to see it in the theater, and one of the girls was crying because she was so scared.  It is a movie that really is aided by the surround sound though.  I have heard people didn't like it as much at home, but I bet it would still do the job now if you have a good setup.

posted this in the netflix thread...

I think we saw this movie on Netflix- but apologies if it was Amazon...

4 Lions- british satire/comedy about british domestic terrorists (muslim), with the kid who plays Nas on "night of". found myself laughing a lot- it's goofball, with most of the humor coming from the goofball idiocy of the guys. as muslim jihadists, there's a bit of a... creepy... undercurrent to the humor, especially what their ultmate target is*. turns out this was made in 2010, so the proliferation of attacks on the continent and abroad hadn't really hit yet. I liked it- found it funny- but wonder whether it could be released today... i don't think so.

*

they settle on attacking the london marathon... this was made and released before Boston... so made both the wife and I cringe and wonder if there was any influence. fwiw- they're dressed, literally, as muppets for this.

The Finest Hours

I am the guy that usually likes the sentimental, heartwarming movies but this felt "overDisneyized" even for me! A good story to work from, with good effects, but felt like they were "playing a violin" though most of it. Weaker than expected.

Brooklyn

After enjoying it the first time, I rewatched it on cable and think that this is one of the best recent films. Ronan was amazing in it and the supporting cast was also very good. This is how you make a sentimental, heartwarming movie the right way.

My Cousin Vinny:

First time seeing it.  Tomei was ####in' sexy and great.  I did laugh a bit, but at the same time wondered why it was on so many 'greatest' lists.  I think I do have a bias against Pesci, so take it for what it's worth there.   Definitely good, but I wouldn't put it in the great/Academy Award category.

Aliens:

I had to watch this yet again.  Was thinking about movies for the 80s thread that MOP has going on, and I hadn't seen this one for a bit( and by that I mean this year).  So ####in' great.  Sorry for the spoilers, but I think this would be #3 on my favorite 80s movie list.  I will admit that some of the stuff looks quite dated - mostly the wide shots in space and ships flying.  Overall, I think this could hold up with damn near anything that poses for a blockbuster today.  This one has is all - scares, laughs, action.  I can't believe this on is 30 years old.  I know I have said it before, but a key ingredient to make any movie great: Bill Paxton.  Cracks me up every damn time.  I have been combing through 90s movies and he seems to show up a bit in my favorite movies of that decade too  Instantly improves the movie by 30% by being in it.

"The Commitments".   Never seen it before a few days ago so I think it had really limited release & not because it wasn't popular.  Don't know why.   Older(1991?) movie about a guy in Ireland puts together an R & B band.  Ends up with all white band.   Story is good & music even better!!!

Highly recommend!

4.5/5
Sing Street just came out on DVD. Very different yet very similar to The Commitments, I loved it.

Hudson (Paxton's character) had a record number of good lines in it. I still quote many of them today. When I am watching the Super Bowl and it becomes totally one sided, I start saying "Game over, man, game over!" in Paxton's whiny voice.

For many, many years I used Paxton's line from "Weird Science" - You're stewed, buttwad - more than anyone on Planet Earth.

I love Vinny, but then again I think a good comedy is really hard to make. The movie is a bit of a zeitgeist, but I think it works well still. Aliens is one of the greatest movies ever made.

I'm hoping somebody watches this. partially because I found it genuinely funny and would recommend it for that- but would love to compare thoughts about the whole jihadi terrorist thing working/not-working as comedy. "rubber dinghy rapids"

eta: here's a scene pretty representative of the humor throughout.

Yep.. Even the edited version on TV gets me    .. So many great parts and lines.

Sausage Party:

Meh.  You know what you are getting when you see the trailer, obviously.  I guess maybe I was hoping for something that went a little farther like we got from South Park or Team America.  Nope, just groceries swearing and hitting on all the stereotypes like you'd expect.  I am not saying that it wasn't funny at all or that I didn't laugh, just overall I had enough after about 15mins or so.
I'm a very easy laugh and I think I chuckled twice. And when I say easy laugh, I laugh at the MC Hammer 3M commercial.

Liked Team America and loved South Park movie, but Sausage Party never really connected for me.

REC4   I loved the original REC movie. Very tense, scary movie. Never saw 2 or 3

This? Too many characters I didn't care about and kinda predictable, but the use of the boat motor on the monkees reminded me of the lawn mower scene from Dead Alive.

And Manuela Velasco is still cute as the spunky reporter

Bad Moms - 9/10  Worth going to the theater to watch.  The uncircumcised penis bit was one of the most hilarious things I have seen in a long time.

Remember the days when films were usually better than TV? That seems like so long ago now.

Stranger Things

This show is outstanding. The attention to detail, from the font in the opening credits to the analog synth in the soundtrack, is pitch perfect. I'm only four episodes in, but I am hooked. Highly recommended.

The Night Of

Brilliant series by excellent crime novelist Richard Price. This show is just simply flawless. The acting and writing are top notch, and even the casting of so many real looking actors is perfect. John Turturro is a highlight in particular. Every note he hits is dead on. And I didn't remember this, but Turturro can work a little humor in a drama like this that in lesser hands would be clumsy.

We watched the 3rd episode of Stranger Things last night. It's getting better, still not hooked yet though. I like the nostalgic feel of it. You should check out The Night Of thread. Most people, myself included, do not agree with your assessment. I loved the first episode but it went downhill for me with each episode where I could barely get through it and was glad when it was over.

It definitely took me like 4 episodes to get into Stranger Things. And I don't ever think it was brilliant. It was good. Much better than The Night Of. I agree with you - that was SEVERELY flawed (as discussed in the thread). It was long form Law & Order.

Glad to hear that about Stranger Things. Maybe there's some heightened expectations since everyone is so in love with the show but it's just been ok at this point. The 3rd one definitely had me more interested so I hope it continues to get better.

I understand. I won't try to convince you that you like it, but it sure works for me.

I found Stranger Things highly entertaining, but at the same time quite predictable and, after some contemplation, full of plot holes.  Still would recommend it.   I really liked the 90's retro feeling and nostalgia that the show brings.

Is The Night Of completed now?  I am getting too spoiled, and don't like to wait if I get hooked on something, so now I try to wait until a full run/season of something is done before watching it.  I think I have 8 or 9 episodes on the dvr?

Yeah, it's done. 8 episodes total.

Terminator Genisys:

Yeah, I pretty much hated this movie.  Crappy looking action, bland characters/actors, and it was just plain stupid.  There were a couple mini-nuggets of good ideas buried in there, and that is probably what kept me from shutting it off, but I did have the urge to do so for most of the duration of the movie.  Depending on my mood it's a toss up between 1 and 2 which I'd rather watch, but I think they have gotten worse with each one that get made.  3/10

I also wasn't prepared for this being 1/2 way a reboot/rehash, as they felt the need to hit on a lot of stuff from the previous movies.  I don't know how Star Wars was able to do it so well (for me, at least - and that is probably the most recycled of these movies as far as story/plots go), where all the others in the same vein have fell so short - this, Jurassic World, Ghostbusters, etc..

Kubo and the Two Strings

A work of art. This stop-motion animated adventure took years to make. Highly recommended if you have kids, but I saw it with adults and I loved every minute of it. Incredible.

Looks amazing but my kid is just shy of 8 and it would be too scary for her.
