I didn't know what to expect when I sat down to watch Saw but it was generating all kinds of buzz at the time. I gotta say that I really enjoyed it. Not enough to watch Saw 2, which I still think is a solid decision by me.Yankee23Fan said:

They might have been trying to make that message but I just couldn't view it on a level any deeper than its surface.
Because they show people being gratuitously tortured for 90 minutes and audiences eat it up. I think the average movie goer who chooses to see Hostel is not like you guys who view it on multiple levels and understand the nuance and message. They are mouth breathers who become aroused by the superficial levels of the film.
Again, you probably see more deaths in the Saw movies and more consistently. Are they torture porn too?

Maybe I am just a sick ******* or more of a fan of the slasher movies that I grew up with, but a lot of the fun of the genre was watching people get offed in various ways. I don't think people were watching Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street movies for any deep message, they probably wanted to see some #### and the bad guy hacking up some teens. I guess I just see these movies as an extension of that (hell, most horror movies as an extension of that urge). Again, I watched a ton of stuff like Hellraiser that was probably just as bad 20 years ago, and usually think horror movies are saying something a little about human nature/fears/urges (probably more than the people making them intended
I get old granny who doesn't know better throwing the term around, but not people who like and get movies in general, or who seem to like horror movies. Sorry, I grew up with horror movies and heavy metal - I have a chip on my shoulder from defending both for decades....
Oh, for sure. Just saying overall that has been an impulse and a reason for people to watch the genre. It didn't start with Saw/Hostel and movies like that which seem to get the label the most.
Yeah, It's Horror/Suspense/Mystery which is probably why it wasn't as big $$$
Interesting movie for sure, and couldn't get the character of Nix out of my head when seeing Kruger on Seinfeld.
Sing Street just came out on DVD. Very different yet very similar to The Commitments, I loved it.
Hudson (Paxton's character) had a record number of good lines in it. I still quote many of them today. When I am watching the Super Bowl and it becomes totally one sided, I start saying "Game over, man, game over!" in Paxton's whiny voice.
For many, many years I used Paxton's line from "Weird Science" - You're stewed, buttwad - more than anyone on Planet Earth.
I love Vinny, but then again I think a good comedy is really hard to make. The movie is a bit of a zeitgeist, but I think it works well still. Aliens is one of the greatest movies ever made.KarmaPolice said:

Cabin/Tucker & Dale would be a great horror double feature for people that don't normally like horror.
I'm a very easy laugh and I think I chuckled twice. And when I say easy laugh, I laugh at the MC Hammer 3M commercial.

I loved the original REC movie. Very tense, scary movie. Never saw 2 or 3
We watched the 3rd episode of Stranger Things last night. It's getting better, still not hooked yet though. I like the nostalgic feel of it. You should check out The Night Of thread. Most people, myself included, do not agree with your assessment. I loved the first episode but it went downhill for me with each episode where I could barely get through it and was glad when it was over.
It definitely took me like 4 episodes to get into Stranger Things. And I don't ever think it was brilliant. It was good. Much better than The Night Of. I agree with you - that was SEVERELY flawed (as discussed in the thread). It was long form Law & Order.
Glad to hear that about Stranger Things. Maybe there's some heightened expectations since everyone is so in love with the show but it's just been ok at this point. The 3rd one definitely had me more interested so I hope it continues to get better.
I found Stranger Things highly entertaining, but at the same time quite predictable and, after some contemplation, full of plot holes. Still would recommend it. I really liked the 90's retro feeling and nostalgia that the show brings.
