Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (14 Viewers)

I hovered on the Criterion Channel yesterday and knocked out 3 shorter movies.   

Dr. Strangelove - I got a couple more chuckles, but just not my humor and one of my least favorite Kubrick's.  

The Wicker Man -  boy these 70s horror movies were a trip.  I might have been too sober for this one watching it at 1 in the afternoon.  Christopher Lee was great in this role.   I see where Midsommer get's it's influence, but even in the 70s they didn't take it as far as having a pube hair pie.  

Deathdream -  One I had never heard of, but I really like Bob Clark's other movie from the same year - Black Christmas.  This was was better than I expected.   It's a bit dated, but I loved that it was a mash up of a lot of interesting ideas - soldiers returning from 'Nam, the disintigration of the family, all mixed with a Monkey's Paw + zombie movie.  

 
The movie with the pill that makes things happen but you're not sure who really is good or bad was pretty good :P

Watched Project  Power on netflix with Foxx and Gordon-Levitt.  I really enjoyed it. Wasn't the best movie but overall really liked it

I haven’t heard of that? Is it a new release?

 
Last night’s movie isn’t at all a classic but the director is a legend and it’s both his last film and the last film of his that I hadn’t seen. This however wasn’t one of my favorites from him. It was weird enough and full of enough nudity to keep my attention but it was also so weird that it never resonated with me either. This movie may have started the whole Q thing with secret sex cults of powerful leaders, human trafficking, murderous coverups. Also lots of shades of Epstein and his ilk. It’s even creepier the more I think about it. Anyway, my biggest knock is that the movie has 2 megastars in it and the first 1/3 of the movie they get equal billing. However in the final 2/3 of the movie the gorgeous Aussie lead actress is reduced to nagging housewife and stay at home mom. It shouldn’t be a surprise, the director never did know what to do with women in his movies.

I agree with Kubrick and women in his movies, but not sure what else Kidman should have been doing in the movie.  It's been a bit, but isn't her and her dream about the sailor mainly just a catalyst to send Cruise on his adventure and spiral into exploring that side of his mind?

Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard.

There's two likely reasons for this. You've either consumed too much fluoridated water or you haven't been denying others your essence.

Yes the dream of her cheating sets Tom out try and cheat himself and that’s where he gets into trouble. The start of the movie she almost cheats with a fancy Hungarian guy. It really seems like she might be the center of the film more than Tom. She’s elegant and looks fantastic in this movie. But after about 40 mins she disappears other than to make an occasional phone call asking when Tom is coming home. I’m not sure where else the movie could have gone but I was expecting her to somehow become involved in the sex cult.

Strangelove is probably my fave Kubrick.

I guess I didn't take it that way.  I thought they were both flirting at the party, but neither were going to take it that far.  Then I think the debate is if Nic's dream story was real or made up to hurt him as he busted her chops about flirting at the party.   

Again, fully admit it's been years since I have seen the movie.

She wasn’t going to cheat there but I think the guy made some headway. If he contacted her again, she seemed maybe open to it. Either way, she had something to do. Be seductive and interesting. She was allowed to even leave the house!

Yeah, I hear that. I'm in the same boat. Seemed like I've seen all the recent films I wanted to see. Even the ones I was iffy on I've tracked down over the last few months. I don't go too much for pre-1980 stuff so I don't usually dig too deep into the catalog. But I was staying at my girl's place the other night and she has different streaming services than I do. She said a friend of hers unearthed a good overlooked movie from like 2008-2012 era. I vaguely remembered hearing some buzz about it in the press before it was released, but I guess it was one of those movies that didn't make it out to the multiplex so I never caught it and somehow just missed following up with everything else going on at the time. Really good cast but since it was a smaller film, you could tell they were happy to do it for scale pay because they loved the script so much. Good engaging story, well made, and the whole second half was one really good slow burn buildup that had me totally into it with the tension, I was like locked in for the whole final hour totally into it. I think what I liked most about it was they took the kind of story that is typically done by the popcorn-hollywood studios as a mindless action film and instead turned it into a cerebral nail-biter. From what I've read of your posts and the type of movies you'd like, it's totally in your wheelhouse.

Man that’s vague (or i just haven’t seen it and am missing the big clue) and it would be super funny if you just made all made all of this up and there was no movie but I’m going to think on it.

Rereading it, there's a pretty massive clue right in the beginning of the post. I think I'll watch this thread and give you guys until Monday.

 
Maybe the “same boat” reference. Googles movies about boats from 2008-2012... Triangle?

Always Shine - just a random one on Criterion that I vaguely remember hearing about for a horror/thriller suggestion.  It was OK, some good performances, but fizzled at the end.  

The last couple nights after the edibles kicked in have yielded some great movie choices.  Watched Freddy vs. Jason the other night and Kong: Skull Island last night.  Maybe tonight is a Next Karate Kid night.  :bag:

nice to get past all that Strangelove-y drivel and watch some REAL movies...

 
Has anyone discussed Pieces of a Woman here yet? It’s on Netflix with Shia Lebouf, Sarah Snook (the daughter on Succession), Ellen Burstyn and most significantly surefire Best Actress Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby. One of those movies like In the Bedroom or Woman Under the Influence where it’s all about the actors. Really tough to watch at times because the pain and isolation Vanessa Kirby goes through just leaps off the screen and into your soul. I felt so deeply for her. The plots pretty simple: how a pregnancy gone wrong can completely derail the life trajectory of a woman. How things can happen in life that cause us to stop dead in our tracks while the world moves forward around us. Well worth the watch if you are in the right mood and willing to share in the trauma.

Didn't turn my crank. Found myself frustrated with their actions... Which was likely the intent, just didn't care enough to enjoy the ride.

Interesting. I didn’t find anyone’s actions all that odd. There was one thing that seemed a little ridiculous but they mostly seemed to act like normal people would under that kind of emotional stress.

I think, iirc...she especially didn't really change grow until the one moment where she did. Once the trauma hit, felt like I was watching the same behavior over and over without much change. That got tiresome more than interesting for me. Caveat- watched it late and had no idea what I was getting into.

I guess that’s how I see things in life. People don’t change until they do. Also she never wanted what happening. It’s what everyone else wanted. She just finally spoke out against it and asserted herself. Also I do think it’s a movie you kind of need a heads up going into. You have to be ready for it.
