after seeing the new Deadpool last week and all the xmen references and easter eggs, I went through the X-men catalog in chronological order.
The New Mutants, never heard of it and damn it was horrible .
Such a range of movies from crap to pretty good for this franchise

I hope that one gets a proper reboot, it was one of my favorite comic series growing up. I got into it kind of late right when they spun it into X-Force
There are so many great characters and story lines, you think they could do it right at some point but i dont have much faith considering on how the Marvel Universe started and where it is now.
Then add in Deadpool, the studio wanted nothing to do with it and only got to where it is because of Ryan Reynolds desire to push it through

I'm riding with the others who didn't care much for The Bikeriders. I hated the narrative gimmick of the interviewer and narrator--I guess it was supposed to make it seem more authentic but I thought it hurt the flow of the story, not that there was that much plot to begin with.

The mostly dark and elegiac tone did little to convey the appeal of the gang and what bound the the characters together. There are a lot of low budget biker exploitation movies of the 60s and 70s that did a better job of it than this one.

X-Tinction Agenda would be fun

Aguirre, The Wrath of God

If Terrence Malik directed Apocalypse Now...

And thank goodness he didn't.
I watched this sometime this month. The main actor Klaus Kinski commands the screen - just captivating. I've read he was the worst to work with - there's some quote from Herzog, who cast him in a lot of movies, that roughly says he's the greatest actor and also a monster.

There were some odd bits in this movie that didn't work for me (the daughter scene near the end is one), but as a descent into madness, it was really well done. Apocalypse Now is the correct comparison.
During the filming of Fitzcarraldo (in Peru, with hundreds of Native actors and extras), Kinski was so difficult that the Native leaders came to director Herzog and offered to kill Kinski for him.
Totally believable

I really enjoyed Alien: Romulus. Best since Aliens for sure. Special effects, set design and sound were all amazing.

They finally returned to what made the first two installments the best of the franchise. There were a couple of eye roll moments in the name of fan service that I wish they had left out, but overall, Romulus is a fantastic installment for the franchise. Two thumbs up!

Just got back from it, enjoyed it quite a bit, solid entry and has me wanting to throw on one of the other installments.

Kiddo and I had a movie day yesterday. I narrow it down to 4, and she picks. I was in an animated mood, so we ended up with Puss in Boots. We both really liked it, but I might have liked it even more. About 30mins in I looked at her and said "oooh, I know what would make a fun double feature with this!" Her:  let me guess - Rango?

The Puss in Boots sequel (The Last Wish) is a surprisingly good stoner movie, especially the ending

I am confused why you are bringing this up to me.

The Instigators (apple) is a fun romp. Matt Damon plays straight and allows Casey Affleck to take all the good lines. I'd be surprised if any of you didn't enjoy it.

Really happy to read this, I've been excited to check it out

Oh yeah took the kids to Borderlands yesterday. I never played the game but based on what I heard it was going to be terrible

It wasn’t great but the pace was swift and I was entertained enough. Kind of felt like being in a video game

Ridiculous but super fun, some of the banter felt very reminiscent of Midnight Run to me (in a good way) with Casey in the Grodin role. Some solid laughs throughout and a heckuva cast.

I really liked it - it felt more 3D than usual, it somehow felt like I really knew the surroundings at each stage.

That said, the final stage was pretty Resurrection, and I didn't like it that much.

I might have to check it out, don’t think I ever saw Covenant
I think the only real link to Covenant was about how long David worked with the black goo to create the proto-xenomorph, and how bad of an idea it was for Rook to try to speed that up to make black goo useful for humans.

Lucy (Peacock): 2014 sci fi movie, IMDB 6.4. Luc Besson movie with Scarlett Johanssen and a bit of Morgan Freeman. I expected this to be Jane Wick for some reason, but it was something completely different. It looked good, the villain was good, but the whole premise was so dumb that it had a cap on how good it could be. 10% of the brain stuff is the basis of the movie. Still, Johanssen was good and the movie was about as good as it could get given such a poor foundation.

Some thoughts about the scene where the cousin dies of acid... Was this the first time we've seen the big cocoon/vagina that the chestbursters hang out in while turning into a full xenomorph? And where did the acid blood come from - did he damage the xeno, or was it just from the cogina?

Didn’t he shove the shock stick in there which would have presumably injured the xenomorph?

Yeah, but it didn't seem damaged at all when it came out.

The Great Beauty: Italy. A 2013 spiritual sequel to La Dolce Vita. Jep Gambardella is a theater critic and king of Roman nightlife but as 65th birthday arrives, he becomes disullusioned with his band of Roman socialites, nighclubs and meaningless overinduelgence. La Dolce Vita has become one of my favorite movies and I was just in Rome in June so my expectations were high but I was disappointed. Maybe too high of expecations? I don't know, just didn't love it. Felt like it had nothing new to say.

Emitai: Senegal. The Diola tribe are dragged into WW2 when the French force them take up arms and fight. This is a movie about colonial resistance. Not in the way The Battle of Algiers is. Here, the primary resistance comes from the women. When the tribe is ordered to give the French their rice, the women hide it. The resistance here is stoic and passive. It comes through prayer and discourse with their gods. There are some challenging thoughts as we see a culture come face to face with a world in which it can no longer function. The older men say that it used to be that the young inherit from the old but now the old inherit from the young- in this case they are inheriting the problems of the young, specifically the tragedy of the war and the profound loss it brings. The men also beg their gods for help but the gods refuse them to which the men warn the gods that if the men don't exist, the god won't either. Very good movie, quite different too with a haunting quality.

My Neighbor Totoro: Japan. So my "adopted" daughter is into cartoons and I've bonded with her watching stuff like the Inside Out movies, Robot Dreams, etc. She's not into any Japanese cartoons so I thought Miyazaki could be a new world of cartoons she would like and we could explore. So I optimistically checked out my first Studio Ghibli film. Unfortunately, I didn't get the appeal. It was cute I guess but I was bored through most of it and it's only 86 minutes. Maybe someone can explain to me why I should check out a different Ghibli film or that this one is different than most? I am very hesisitant to try another and I certainly won't recommend them to the kid.

The Big City: India. Satyajit Ray is a master film maker. I've only ever seen 1 other movie of his but this pretty much seals it for me. Think Ozu and Yang, this unassuming story of a family forced to buck tradition and send the wife into the workforce to help provide financial support is so simple yet layered and touching. Characters are three dimensional and dynamic. The melodrama of everyday life while also representing a massive societal shift. It's so good with both the little and the big. Loved this and the performance by Madhabi Mukherjee is maybe the best of anyone in my little summer of foreign films series.
Global Film Fest pt 6

Spies: Germany. Fritz Lang's follow up to Metropolis is probably the oldest movie I will watch for this. It's a banger though- plenty fast paced. You can see a lot of early James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock in this. It's a full on complex action spy thriller at 2 hours 20 mins with twists and set pieces. The leader of a secret international spy ring discovers one of his Russian spies has fallen for a German government agent. If you have any interest in silent movies, this is highly recomended.

Argentina 1985: Argentina. My second film delving into the military coup of 1976 and it's fallout. This is a classic court room drama focusing on the monumental process for a civilian court to bring charges forward on the military leaders responsible for the atrocities of their brief dictatorship. It's formulaic but well done and given that the subject matter is generally fresh for Americans, I think it's a good viewing. There's a lot to be learned from this. It was partly an Amazon production and is streaming there.

The Piano Teacher: Austria. So this was labeled an erotic psychological drama but literally no description could prepare me for this. There's some kink in this (and kink shaming) that I've for sure never seen in a movie before. It's shocking and not at all sexy. Didn't care for it but it never lost my attention that's for sure.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: Spain. I've seen maybe 6 or 7 Almodovar films now. This is still my favorite and I think his most accessible. A somewhat crude- maybe even tacky comedy. It's bright and slapstick. It's like Almodovar was trying to give a nod to the Bringing Up Babys of the late 30s, early 40s but drencehd with color. You've got spiked gazpacho, shiite terrorists and a young baby faced stuttering Antonio Banderas. Big big fan of this one.

Watched The Union last night. Rotten Tomatoes got it right but still not a terrible movie to watch. Just don't expect an Academy award winning performance by Marky Mark.

ETA - I also watched Furiosa over the weekend. Didn't care for Fury Road but I did like this one for some reason.

Finally got around to The Iron Claw. Pretty good, pretty depressing

Between seeing this and Ricky Stanicky recently, man did Zac Efron age horribly.

unfortunately ...

Efron injured his jaw several years ago when he was running through his house with socks on, according to Men's Health. The actor said he slipped while running and caught his face on the corner of a granite fountain.

Ah that could be it, definitely looks like he had some work done

we watched this last night as well.

not sure where RT puts it, but if it got it right it should be solidly between "meh" and "well, whatever".

Luckily I linked it but people ignore me on a pretty regular basis so...38% Tomatometer, 26% audience score.

Watched this last night. Completely agree. They somehow managed to make Halle Berry unattractive, too.

Yea no kidding, she did bounce very well throughout though...

Mark Wahlberg: getting up insanely early to workout 6-8 times every day of the week to be a part of absolutely dogshit movies for you!

Keeping in the same vein of watching **** movies, I plowed through Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F last night. I had put it off thinking it was just going to be a terrible money grab for someone but being a child of the 80's and remembering Eddie in his hey day I knew the tug to watch it would win out eventually so I hit play.

The only thing I came away with was who needed the cash? The movie was just a carbon copy of the first two, down to the music, but with much much older stars who just shouldn't have. I was particularly impressed with the amount of time I imagined the hair stylus spending every morning trying to get Taggert's hair that color. In short, it was exactly what I thought it would be and while disappointed would probably be too strong, it certainly made me wonder who put their stamp of approval on this one?

It was still better than part 3

Just got back from Alien Romulus. It was a'ight. I love the Aliens franchise, and there was just really not too much new and/or exciting.
I'd put it between second and third tier I suppose.
Alien/Aliens/Prometheus are the nuts
Covenant/Resurrection second tier. I know I'm probably a bit alone on an island with Resurrection, but I loved it and the story was more original.
Romulus/AvP Yes I'll include these and AvP had a good story, but execution lacked a bit.
AvP requiem. So/so, too much ridiculousness and bad acting.
Alien3 terrible

fwiw, to me, there is a direct correlation to the number of humans on screen to the rankings of the movies. Less humans is better.

The Killer (new on Peacock) is a remake of John Woo's 1989 Hong Kong action classic directed by the great man himself. The new version moves the action to Paris and keeps the same character relationships but makes the assassin character a woman which adds some tension to what was a bromance in the original.

It has all of Woo's cinematic signatures to fill your bingo card: fluttering birds, Mexican standoffs, religious iconography, bloodstained windows and gun barrel shots. He can still stage a gun battle with the best of them even if you've seen his technique a lot in other movies. The direct-to-streaming budget is evident at times but it was better than I expected going in.

It's mostly in English with a bit of subtitled French.

The original a classic. I don't know if I can stomach watching this.

I've mentioned my 16 year old sort of adopted daugher and our bonding over movies. I am trying to see if she's really got the movie bug and checking out some more serious movies beyond the cartoon movies she especially loves. When she said she loved Karate Kid, Back to the Future and Baby Driver I figured she might have some taste beyond the Tangled, Inside Out, Minions stuff. So far, we are 3 for 3:

Jaws: said it was really scary, jumped a couple times, was engaged all through

Stand By Me: she laughed a ton, thought the train sequence was terriftying and had a bunch of questions about what happened to the kid actors, enjoyed it

The Shawshank Redemption: fell asleep about 30 mins in and I woke her offering to take her home but she said she was fine. I was really worried I pushed too much too quick with this. I mean it is a movie set 80 years ago about a bunch of guys in prison. When Brooks goes, I thought I heard a little sniffle but was expecting more. Ok, maybe it was not for her but then when it seems like maybe Andy hung himself and we get the dramatic disappearence she was begging me to tell her if he hung himself or was alive and what happened. When Red got out, she said she just knew he would stay in the same room Brooks was in and at the end she said it was such a good movie and had the best ending ever.

So yeah, as someone who grew up watching movies with his dad, this is like a dream come true. She has never once looked at her phone during a movie. Next 2 up are Field of Dreams and Good Will Hunting.

Have you tried John Hughes?

No, I've tried literally the 3 movies you see. Though I have asked about a lot and she has seen them. She seems to have good taste and has been exposed to a decent amount so that's what got me trying more and more. I suggested The Princess Bride to her a few months ago and she watched it on her own. She said she liked it but didn't seem to love it so I guess that was maybe a slight miss based on her reaction. I for sure have Ferris Bueller on my shortlist.
