Red Zone Channel - Be Better (1 Viewer)

Just had five consectutive minutes of full-screen, one game at a time, game play without any interuption from Scott Hanson. IT.WAS.GLORIOUS ... and rare

I've been a Scott Hanson fan for a long time, but lately (and maybe it's just this season) it's is seven-hours of mass-distraction where it seems like I'm constantly staring at a triple box with Scott Hanson calling one game while the game audio seems to be for a different game. JUST STOP.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, BUT, I do find myself "escaping" to the late afternoon dedicated broadcast, where I happen to watch a lot of commercials. Coincidence?

Wait, you're complaining about Red Zone seemingly doing exactly what it says it will do?

I think his point is that they've gotten a lot more aggressive at putting up split screens instead of focusing on one game, even when many of the games in the split screen aren't in a scoring situation.

I kind of agree. If there's a team on the 10 and 3 teams at midfield I'd rather see fullscreen of the team on the 10 than a quad box of all four games.

Far too much triple split yesterday.

Add Best Buy and giant screen television manufacturers to the list of entities involved in the conspiracy.

It's been a long time since I watched Redzone with the sound on. Scott Hanson began to telegraph upcoming plays a few years ago with specific intonations and word choices where it became obvious what was about to happen. Have simply had the muted pictures with music ever since I decided enough was enough and enjoy my viewing experience much more for it.

The standard of commentary on sport in general is abysmal in my opinion. It frustrates me more than my team performing badly, so I've simpy checked out of it. Strongly recommend.

I have said the same thing in other threads. SH yaps WAY too much. It would be much better if he talked about 80% less. He's gotten a little better at not tipping plays but he still does it. Constantly makes mistakes or misses obvious things that happen and has to correct himself after the fact. I really wish they would pivot to another host who doesn't have that game show delivery/personality. Hanson should be hosting Card Sharks, not RedZone. Imagine how great RedZone would be with someone like Rich Eisen?

Adam Archuleta ruined the Jets game yesterday. Just pooped all over it. Ruined my experience. I was hot under the collar about it.

I have never watched the Red Zone channel.

ETA-I feel like an extreme outlier

Nope. Unless we’re two extreme outliers. Never understood the appeal. The red zone is not a great way to see so many elements of the game I want to see, especially speed. If I want twenty bulls in a china shop I’ll go watch twenty bulls in a china shop.

It's fascinating to watch but not for the reasons one would think.

and then they go to a single box and a penalty occurs and they stay there the entire time the refs confer and stand around and then make the call. like ok it was cool you went to a single screen because the team was in scoring position, but when the team then calls TO or a penalty, SWITCH TO A DIFFERENT GAME FFS!!!!

If you're gonna give Scott a break for a minute or two, and they do and should, at least put it on something interesting FFS. There is action elsewhere and we're watching refs stand around for some rando in-game call.

I kid but the reality is it's an amazing product and Scott really is amazing. Nothing but love and respect for how difficult that job must be. It's the timbre of his voice though, and it isn't his fault.
Rich Eisen at the exact same pace would actually work much better (for me).

I've snagged Sunday Ticket these last couple years and so I tend to throw up my own quad box with three regular feed games and the 4th box is redzone. The audio is from whichever of the 4 boxes I highlight so I'll go between game feeds but almost never Scott anymore.

I am such a junkie that if I leave the room to go do something, I'll put Red Zone on my phone, but then they'll switch to the triple box and I'm squinting like "what the hell is happening? What are these ants on the screen doing?"

The lack of commercials is the thing that is worth more than its weight in gold. It is sooooo dang nice to only suffer through broadcasts on Th, SNF and MNF.
Said it before but as a UK based fan it is the only way I can actually absorb the sport. The amount of ad breaks in a standard game is just not something my brain can handle, our TV isn't like that over here, at least not the bits of it I watch.

Soccer (Football) is my first choice sport and over here it is 45 minutes of uninterrupted play, ad breaks and half time analysis, 45 more minutes of uninterrupted play. Once you're used to that, ad breaks every few minutes feels like a third world experience.

I love RedZone but I also have a 2 TV setup so I am switching through primary games on my other screen and using RedZone more as an instant highlight reel than trying to analyze football in any way.
I basically switch to redzone during the ad breaks and halftime for the one main game I'm watching. That way I get the best of both worlds.

I have a two TV setup as well and would rather have control of the game I am watching. I tried the redzone channel a couple times on one of the TV's and I much preferred just flipping from game to game on my own. It's not that hard to know when a game is nearing the "redzone" to switch over if I want to.

I personally hate when it goes to quad boxes, octo boxes, etc. Like you can't see a single thing about any of the games lol.

Back in the 90s when the average amount of real estate on a TV was, at most, a quarter of what it is now, did you just not watch football as you couldn't see what was going on? Or did you use binoculars?

Put me into that outlier group as well. I much prefer to switch game to game myself. I have a two TV set up so if the Vikes are on they will be on one tv and I use the other as my own redzone channel. I will flip around to various games primarily based on my fantasy teams and what players I want to watch. It's easy now to see when my players are on the field to go to those games or flip around if a game is getting interesting. The redzone channel is ok but not preferred.

I think it's more info overload. At least that is what it is for me. I can see what is going on but with all happening on the smaller scale I would rather just watch a single game.

I've been watching NFL football since 1983 at 6yo and the commercials started pissing me off then.

I suppose the issue is that given the number of breaks in play, if it isn't adverts it's some inane commentary or hot take from a talking head whose opinion I have no interest in. There's no winning really.

Red Zone is a flawless product and Scott Hanson is better at this job than any other human on the planet.

I'm going to disagree with this. Andrew Siciliano was better and the DIRECTV Red Zone was better imo.
This 100%. I can't believe they dumped Siciliano for this mindless dolt.

I don't think they dumped Siciliano. If I recall there were two separate redzone channels. One on DirecTV as part of Sunday Ticket with Siciliano and only available to DirecTV customers, and one on regular cable as part of a sports package with Hanson. When DirecTV lost Sunday Ticket their Redzone product went away, and the cable one is the only one that remained.

I'm American and after I started watching Soccer (Football) in the mid 90's it was hard, really hard to make it through American sports commercials. Red Zone helps with this tremendously.

I'll second the take that Red Zone is going downhill, fast. Scott's commentary is often way off, late, and inconsistent. My biggest beef is the split screen viewing. I have an 85" OLED I set about 10 feet away from my sectional and in many cases I have trouble seeing what's going in in each game. It's ridiculous. Bring back the days where they would cut back and forth from game to game. Even if some cuts are delayed by a few seconds, it's fine (they are anyway, especially in the late window), let's get back to the full screen. I get it, you guys have great technology. The "Octo-boooooooooox" and the "QUAD-BOX" are glorious marketing ploys and allow for in screen marketing, but they fall flat for real viewers. If I want to watch the NFL like this, I'll buy the ticket and put them on different screens. Redzone isn't what Redzone was, that's a fact Jack.

Question for you or anyone that may know. I have Xfinity and paid for the sports package that includes Red Zone channel and I believe it is Scott Hanson and watch it on Sundays. I used to have Directv and remember they had a Red Zone channel that I would watch and sometimes just flip back and forth with a specific game I liked

I have been considering switching to YouTubetv and when my brother was visiting a few weeks ago he logged in to his YouTubetv account at my house where he has NFL ticket. I have used his log in the past few weeks and I like the 4 screen option a lot in the afternoon games when there is only 4 games going. However in the morning window I just prefer Red Zone channel but I can't find it on YouTubetv and have to switch back to Xfinity to watch it. Do NFL ticket subscribers not have access to Red Zone channel? If so, what channel is it on?

I rather they have 2 max, or quickly jump back and forth if there's a few in huge situations.
Even when it's only two games the viewability sucks because there is so much dead space or marketing on the screen. You can't see who's who and I have a massive TV I sit way to close to. I'm tiring of it right now. I find myself flipping between the 2 games far more often than I'm watching Redzone these days. The problem right now is we don't really have a better option, but Redzone is most certainly not as good of a product as it was 5 years ago.

It's definitely a lot going on.

So because technology used to suck (I watched the 85 Bears on a 25 inch tube TV FWIW), we should be happy that they're not taking full advantage of the newer technology these days? That's a ridiculous argument. Single games on huge screens > Split Screens >> Quad-Boxes >>>>>>>OCTO-Boxes....

but Redzone is most certainly not as good of a product as it was 5 years ago.

In your opinion, what specifically was better about it 5 years ago?
I kind of already detailed what was better (for me) back then. There is far too much split screen/quad-box/octo-box these days. Back then, I had a 65-75" TV. I now have an 85" OLED. It used to be that there was normally a single game on the TV, and they would quickly flip between them as action occurred. If action was missed, they'd show the highlight when they had downtime. There was very little split screen, typically only during opening kickoffs or at random times, not for the entire 6 hours which seems to be the case these days. One screen viewing allowed for better player identification, and I've also noticed Scott's commentary is much less accurate and consistent with so many games on the screen now vs then. I notice so many blatant errors in his commentary these days, it's off-putting, and that's not even taking into account the times they cut to a game and he has absolutely no idea what's even happening and he tries to fill dead air with inaccurate or uninformed filler, which is on the producers IMO. I like Scott, but he's being put in a position to fail with what they're currently trying to do.

I might like it if I was using a projector onto a barn wall, but on my 85" TV it's a hard watch.

I just said something really raunchy but being discreet is a better side of valor here.

I don’t really understand the problem with quad boxes on an 85” screen. That should be more than doable. Mine’s 55” and I’m just fine with it.
I CAN see what's happening, just like I CAN see what's going on in an NBA game broadcast in SD vs HD vs 4K. It doesn't mean the SD is on par with the HD. That also doesn't mean I should like it just because it's OK or manageable. I want the best possible view of what I'm watching. If I wanted to watch a game on a 20" screen, I would.

Yes that same redzone channel is available on Youtube TV but it requires the sports package which is an extra $10-15 per month.

Thanks. I like the quad and octo box, but I can see how one might not if they didn't have a setup to see the screen well.

I'm not bothered by the occasional error, as I know how difficult it is to understand what hes' trying to do. But you're right, the goal should be zero mistakes. I don't know him but had a chance to talk with him a couple of years ago and I'm sure that's his goal too. He went through his prep for the day and it's pretty wild.

Oh yeah, I’m not going to tell you what your personal preference should be. I’m just saying I have absolutely no trouble with it and am surprised people do have trouble. But hey, some people like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and others Cookies n’ Cream, so . . .
