Refs have ALWAYS stunk (1 Viewer)

Does no one remember this? Seahawks fans whined for an entire offseason after their Super Bowl loss. The Calvin Johnson "non catch" last year? Fans have ALWAYS hated the refs and claimed that they stunk.

I don't get why fans are outraged? Because its the Packers? The refs didn't steal the game from GB. GB played like crap for 3.5 quarters and put themselves behind the 8 ball. Take it from a guy who watched fisher ball for ten years. When you keep the score close, you always risk one call screwing your team.

The bottom line is that refs stink they have always stunk and they will always stink. Lets talk football.

That's not the point. The point is that unqualified refs should not be in the position of making the calls to begin with...especially when a call will dictate who wins or loses. It's not their fault--the game is too fast for them. Sure, the "real" refs could have blown the call last night too (the missed interception and the missed pass interference), but they could have at least used their experience, knowledge, and expertise to make the call. The refs last night never had a shot. That is what people are upset about.

Nothing the replacements have done is worse than the Trey Junkin playoff game in 2003. Sheer referee stupidity knocked the wrong team out of the playoffs. One ref called the play right, but the head ref never consulted with him and called the wrong penalty out of nowhere and cost a team its entire season. It was so bad that, unlike today's letter from the commish, the NFL's official statement said the final play of the game was completely miscalled at every turn and that the losing team deserved one last play. But they weren't going to do anything to fix it. That's a worse referee mistake than anything we've seen so far.

The erfs have always stunk and the NFL is trying to make changes to improve the officiating, but the union is not allowing it.

At least the guy who made the bad call was qualified to do so. I hope that makes sense...

Good point. I had forgotten that one. Officiating has been horrendous for years. At least now some players and teams can misdirect attention from their own crappy play and blame scab refs.

they have had bad games too, but they knew the basic rules and could generally be relied upon to manage the clock efficiently. There were Hochuli games and there were even games in last year's playoffs where they missed key fumbles. But the games generally had a flow to them and there were far fewer 'key' mistakes.

I guess people who blame the refs are misdirecting their anger. People should be mad that the situation between the union and the nfl has lingered this long and that hopefully each side will get their act together.

That game was stolen. This is a bad fishing trip, right?

Refs will always made bad calls, it comes with the business, but the most that fans and players can hope for is that the referees out there are qualified to administer and call the game to the best of their ability. There is no question that the guys out there are not qualified, so any mistake they make is compounded because they are not fit for the job to begin with.

The issue is not that the replacement refs are bad or worse than the "real" refs. The issue is that players, coaches and fans perceive validity in the outcome of a game officiated by the "best" refs available. Replacement refs call this validity of outcome into question.

Albeit, this is the reason the NFL is trying to get full time refs and actual reviews of their calls. Because history has many examples of poor refereeing with the "best" refs. But the media engine is out to destroy these replacement refs and this last questionable call is their scapegoat to pile on their agenda...

The problem with the replacement refs is that they can not control the games. There is just way too much confusion during games and they are throwing way too many flags. They are taking away from the overall experience of watching an NFL game.

The irony is that the call to end the game was correct
Maybe it was, but they also missed a blatant offensive pass interference.
should have been called, but (wrongly) I don't recall the regular guys making that kind of call....maybe they have/would, but that ind of call doesn't ususally get made
Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. That is the point. Hopefully we get the guys who are fit to make/or not make those calls to be in there, so the game seems legitimate.

I heard a stat that zero offensive pass interferences have been called on a Hail Mary play in many many years....over 50 plays worth. That wouldn't have been called either...
What has happened in the past does not necessarily reflect the future, though. Maybe it would have been called. Would we have been shocked? I wouldn't have. 50 plays is a small sample size (statistically speaking).

In the end, the reason people are mad is because a call by a unqualified ref actually could have cost a team a win--whether that was a pick or not, is up to you.

The fact that a real ref would have made the same call is irrelevant.

Which makes the entire argument seem stupid.

The real refs have had bad games no doubt but look at the sample size. The replacements refs have blown more calls in 3 games than the real refs do in 16 games. Some NFL crews are better than others. Personally, I like Mike Carey and can not stand Triplett. I can't imagine game going south like it did last night with Mike Carey making the calls.

Laugh all you want, clown. These games are a mockery. The sad thing is that likely the outcome of 10+ games has been affected by this...

Called exactly the way the normal refs would've called it. PI never gets called on a hail mary.
Not exactly true... they'll let a lot of contact go and there are many bodies in close proximity but if they saw a shove in the back, they probably call it.

SB Referee Bill Leavy (Hawks fans had a lot to complain about...)"It was a tough thing for me. I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that. It left me with a lot of sleepless nights, and I think about it constantly. I’ll go to my grave wishing that I’d been better … I know that I did my best at that time, but it wasn’t good enough … When we make mistakes, you got to step up and own them. It’s something that all officials have to deal with, but unfortunately when you have to deal with it in the Super Bowl it’s difficult."

Dumbest statement (in bold) I've seen in a long time...

Who cares! This is a childish attitude. The NFL is a business. If you don't like it dont watch it or watch something else. They can decide how they want to do business. It doesn't change the sport of football. Sports have always required teams to overcome adversity including officiating errors. This idiot hysteria is make each marginal call into hyperboleted hysteria. If you listen to the replay the announcer stated that there was simultaneous possession during his description of the play. It was afterward that he started calling the refs decision erroneous and then outlandish. He should never be allowed to call an NFL game again. I wish every one of the stupid announcers that are involved in this hyperbole would be canned.

If a 5'10", 200pnd WR is putting you to the ground with a little shove, there are more pressing issues.
 Yes...it was pass interference and the NFL agreed it was. The pressing issue is the replacement refs need to go.
There's likely 50+ penalties a game that don't get called that are clear as day.

Assuming regular refs, we would have been talking about this play no matter what. the play itself is the main story. It was win or go home where the call of catch or interception is not 100% percent clear. The'refs' come into the situation because of the seeming disfunction and lack of direction when the call was made. The normal refs would minimize the chaos around the play not the controversy over whether the call was correct or not.

So you would prefer that we just skip this football season. Not me, I will continue to watch and to enjoy. I am just going to turn off the sound since all the announcer talk about is the travesty that is the NFL. I don't care to hear their lobbying against their employer just to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

So, it's gone from "where the player uses two hands to shove a defensive player in the back to put him to the ground" to "a player getting pushed in the back like that" with "the NFL stating that the refs missed that call."Quite a goalpost shift. This should be pretty simple, but you don't seem very confident in your initial statement. Would you like to see "one hail mary where the player uses two hands to shove a defensive player in the back to put him to the ground" with no flag in a game officiated by the normal refs? I've already found three in about five minutes of youtubing. But no, the NFL did not come out with statements condemning these non-calls, and even if it did, I'm sure you'd find something about the plays that aren't like that one from the other day, so I guess they wouldn't meet your revised criteria.
