RIP George Kennedy (1 Viewer)

Loved Kennedy. Great character actor. I remember him in all the Airport Movies, Dirty Dozen, Earthquake, so many movies over the years in the 70's and 80's.

RIP.

Leslie Nielson always said that Kennedy never got enough credit for how good he was in the "Naked Gun" movies. He was a perfect straight man.

RIP

As noted, outstanding, underrated character actor that generally elevated whatever movie he was in. Played a great heavy.

My favorite movie with him he received a co-starring credit with Clint Eastwood.

Most of his obituaries omit how he got his start in show business.

In the 50's Phil Silvers had a comedy sitcom about life in the Army, called Sargent Bilko (aka You'll Never Get Rich, and also Bilko).

Anyway the show contacted the Department of the Army to send over a technical advisor so that they could portray things correctly. George Kennedy was who the DOA sent over and Silvers somehow recognized he had acting ability, or at least was a natural to play a serviceman. Anyway, they started casting him in bit parts and as they say, the rest was history. Not an overnight breakout or success but he gradually kept landing better and better roles until he was recognized as being one of the finest character actors of his era.

He was a very good one.

Line from Airport: "The only thing these 707s can't do is read!"
