all 3 siblings had a fairly tough upbringing, though all are super successful.  IIRC, their stepfather committed suicide.

If I'm not mistaken she completely sold her empire to Macy's sometime last year.  There were some rumors at the time she was personally struggling.  Wife is a big fan of her stuff.

Yup. When Chester from Linkin Park did this, he left behind something like 6 kids.

Sucks. At least the kids are pretty much set financially (you would think).

It's a company called Tapestry that owns the Kate Spade brand. Also owns Coach and a bunch of others. Our friends have bounced between the various lines (mostly at Coach) for 20 years.

Ugh. Wife just reported that our one friend just started up again with the brand after getting shifted out of coach. Also said Kate hasn't had anything to do with the brand for a while.

probably just hitting puberty, poor girl is going to have a tough time getting through this but can’t imagine there is any good age to deal with a parent committing suicide.

If you were ever asked to buy the wife a purse, you'd have heard of her. Hers was THE handbag for most US woman for a lot of the last 25 years or so.

Yeah i had no idea there was a connection.  I always thought Kate Spade was just a made up name.

Oddly i also thought David Spade was just a made up name also but never once thought there could be a relation, even by marriage.

When I think of lack of mental health care it’s generally those that can’t afford it.  It’s really expensive.  Obviously Kate Spade had resources.  

Maybe she was just overwhelmed. Sometimes as people get older degenerative diseases impact the defense networks that have allowed someone to previously cope with things like depression.

As to the business and wealth issues...

I believe she sold Kate Spade over a decade ago for like $150 million.  Now, thats a lot of money, but it was then sold to Coach (well, their parent) for like $2 billion+

Now, 150mm is a ton of money, but money can also be lost and I have no idea if there were any financial stresses... or if there could have been a part of her that was now only her in name, without her any say nor ability to not only make money off that, but perhaps moreso, influence how her very name would be recognized worldwide.
