The Dallas Cowboys announced on Thursday that second-year defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland passed away on Thursday morning. A second-year player from Western Michigan, Kneeland was just 24 years old. The team did not announce a cause of death. Kneeland appeared in 18 games during the past two seasons, registering 26 tackles and a sack. In a statement, the team said, "Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family."--Nick Piotrowicz

I know football is not life but crazy to me this was two nights before he took his life
Not so crazy when you imagine what the adrenal comedown is post game.

If you're already struggling, I'd imagine the down time without games is tough. I'd imagine that having a career highlight and then sitting with it after the fact and not finding it especially fulfilling would be an absolutely crushing feeling, like you worked your whole life for that moment and it did not deliver in the way you expected.

Who knows what was going on with him really but it's not so tough to imagine a negative state of mind being amplified by that play I don't think.

I don't understand what happened and I'm not going to try and understand or deep dive into it.
24 year old took his own life for whatever reasons, sad day and my heart goes out to the Dallas Cowboys fans, we have many on the boards
This is a growing trend among younger folks, sometimes it involves shootings of others first like what unfolded near the NFL offices in NYC
I hope we continue to pour resources into finding or understanding more about what is triggering these types of events

Thoughts and Prayers to anyone impacted

Extremely sad.

According to reporting from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation "on the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Boulevard." The time was just after 10:30 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and a chase ensued in which troopers lost sight of the vehicle. The chase was terminated at that time, according to authorities. The vehicle was later found abandoned, showing signs of having been in a crash "on the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway."

That location is very near the Cowboys' headquarters at The Star in Frisco.

Officers from the Plano Police Department responded to a "welfare concern" at an address associated with Kneeland around 11:40 p.m. No contact was made at the address.

At the crash scene, per Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS, authorities conducted a search upon receiving reports that a male subject had fled on foot. "During the course of the search," notes Hill, "officers received information that Kneeland had expressed suicidal ideations."

TMZ is reporting that Kneeland's girlfriend received a concerning message from the Michigan native. She relayed to police that Kneeland was armed and "had a history of mental issues … and she was quoted saying he would 'end it all.'"

The NFL also apparently contacted local police about a player "texting his family goodbye."

Kneeland's body was found by authorities around 1:30 a.m. He was dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It doesn’t get more sad than that. Devestating loss of life. You never know how people are suffering. This reminds me of Anthony Bourdain for some reason. As an outsider he looks like he had it all, but was suffering in ways we could never understand, to get to a point where they feel suicide is the only option. Truly heartbreaking.

It only takes one bad moment for those people when they're in that state of mind to get them to the point that their brain thinks it's the only option. It's scary when you get there. Rational thinking people can be completely broken down in this moment. Chris Cornell. Robin Williams. Chester Bennington. They have things they're maintaining and struggling through just to live every day. Then they have one bad moment and can't fight it anymore. It's truly sad and scary.

That's why you always need to check on your friends and family. If you ever seen a strange post or a weird text that seems out of character, reach out immediately. Don't wait and think "it's probably nothing." That might be their weakest moment. They need a voice to bring them back.
