According to
reporting from Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation "on the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Boulevard." The time was just after 10:30 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and a chase ensued in which troopers lost sight of the vehicle. The chase was terminated at that time, according to authorities. The vehicle was later found abandoned, showing signs of having been in a crash "on the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway."
That location is very near the Cowboys' headquarters at The Star in Frisco.
Officers from the Plano Police Department responded to a "welfare concern" at an address associated with Kneeland around 11:40 p.m. No contact was made at the address.
At the crash scene,
per Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS, authorities conducted a search upon receiving reports that a male subject had fled on foot. "During the course of the search," notes Hill, "officers received information that Kneeland had expressed suicidal ideations."
TMZ is reporting that Kneeland's girlfriend received a concerning message from the Michigan native. She relayed to police that Kneeland was armed and "had a history of mental issues … and she was quoted saying he would 'end it all.'"
The NFL also apparently contacted local police about a player "texting his family goodbye."
Kneeland's body was found by authorities around 1:30 a.m. He was dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
