RIP Percy Sledge (1 Viewer)

RIP to a great voice.

Always think of this scene every time I hear his name.
I loved that show. I saw Percy Sledge perform several years ago at Myrtle Beach. He was in great voice, and very entertaining. I bet he regretted up to the day he died for letting two of his old bandmates take songwriting credit on "When a Man Loves a Woman" to be nice, when Percy was the main songwriter. Oops. 74 isn't very old. I heard today he had liver cancer. He was one of the best voices in soul.

RIP

His catalog is worth digging into a bit if all you know is "When A Man Loves A Woman" and like 60s soul. "Take Time To Know Her" is my favorite.

And if you like Sledge, check out James Carr. Another second tier soul singer who was fantastic, though he never had a hit anywhere near as big as Percy did.

:o Percy wasn't no second tier soul singer. He was 1st tier!! Percy and James Carr both did great versions of Dark End of the Street.

2nd tier was still pretty great. But he wasn't on a level (from a publicity standpoint, which is what I meant) with Otis, Aretha, or Sam Moore
