Robo-calls (1 Viewer)

Just got a call from Cambodia, supposedly... but then the voicemail left showed it was from an 855 number.  Some lame recording about my computer being infected.  I don't even own a computer... pshaw.

The calls had actually stopped for a few weeks but have picked back up.

I got a call from Jordan (the country, not MJ) this past weekend while at the airport in Vegas.  Then the same number called TWELVE times from midnight-7am the following night.

i like to try and keep the people on the line as long as possible and i give them the full hulk hogan voice treatment where if they ask if my computer is running right i tell them you bet you little brohanamaniak i give my computer vitamins and it works out every day so that it can run wild on the internet it is pretty great having them not understand how awesome i am being but hey i have a good time and maybe me and the laroosh on the other end share a laugh and learn some things about life and that my friends is what a robo call should be about take that to the bank bromigos

I used to love to mess with the computer virus guys, but after messing with the last one, they started spamming my home phone starting at 8:00 in the morning until 9:00 at night just non-stop.

Just put nomorobo on my home phone today, so we will see how that works.

I’ve had 4 calls from a number I didn’t recognize. Picked up once, was recorded message saying my Social Security # was “suspended” due to “suspicious activity”. Directed me to call a number, etc.  This scam is pretty persistent, I’ve got same number 4 straight days and  it’s leaving voice mails (saying same thing as recorded message). Never had that before. I also get the calls that look like they are local. Seems typically those are credit card solicitations (lower your interest, etc). All pretty damned aggravating.

maybe i need more friends but i sort of look forward to them cripes kids dont call but the credit card and computer guys always seem to be thinking of me so i will allow it take that to the bank brohans

Hey, my SS# just got suspended, too!

You have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity. So if you want to know about this case, just press one. Thank you. This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration. I thought Google must have made a few errors in transcription, but just listened to the message and it's completely accurate.

This is the kind of possibility that's always kept me from messing with them. I figure that if they want to, they can annoy me a lot more than I can annoy them, so better to just ignore them.

We rarely even answer our phone at home because there are so many.

"Is John Smith there?"

Me: "Hold on, I'll get him for you......" (then go back about my business until they hang up)

What is the robocall business model? Even if I answer by mistake, they just hang up.

Where is the money made?
They're just confirming it's a current useable number for the other branch of the company. When you answer their job is done.

Given the virtually every single number has voicemail nowadays, I find it highly unlikely this is true. Has to be more to it.

Three days in a row now with no robo-calls, something definitely has changed since the crackdown was announced.  Plan on getting the Verizon spam filter app in the future when the calls return.

While I haven't had a robo call in a couple of days, Saturday morning I got a text from a phone number similar to mine that said "STOP ####### CALLING ME!"

So I guess some people aren't as lucky.

Less than last week, but still getting them on Verizon.  Both personal and business cell.

It's open enrollment for healthcare and zero percent interest on credit cards if you didn't know.

But they keep calling. If my number was valid all three times they called yesterday, pretty sure it would still be valid the three times they call today.
in "college" i worked as a telemarketer. we got a stack of phone numbers to work through each day. you called, if they hung up or the call went to an answering machine it got recycled and sent to someone else for the next day. if someone answered the next day, the call went to the manager the day after that and he called to put the full court press on if someone answerd. if they donated, then the number went to the manager's boss who really turned the screws.  if that failed, the number went back in the pile for one of us numbnuts to call again the next day.

wash, rinse, repeat. every. day.

"No my computer is not running right--it was born without legs. I think it is cruel to call and joke about such things."

Anyone else having issue finding Verizon Call Filter in the Google Play Store? I have Caller Name ID in the Verizon bundle on my phone, but not clear if that is the same thing.

I don't get a result either from play store. I googled 'verizon call filter' and got the result but says my phone not compatible. Perhaps try that way

I block them right from phone with Verizon by holding the # from my call log and selecting 'block number' and has worked well enough for me

Thanks for the tip. Got the same message even though their webpage says my phone is compatible.

I had Caller Name ID on my phone, but disabled.  I re-enabled it and then updated it and I'm pretty sure it updated with the new Call Filter name. (I say pretty sure bc this was a couple weeks ago and I already forget exactly what I did to get it working).

Are you paying for this? When I go through the setup, it brings me to a page where it says it is $2.99/mo if I select the "Subscribe Now" button

No, I'm using the free version.  When you go into Account - Subscription Status there's supposed to be a "See other options" option which gives you the chance to say yes to the free features.

When I first updated the app, "see other options" wasn't there where they said it should be.  I closed the app, re-opened and still no.  But when I opened it again the next day, the option was there.  Weird.  There seems to be a lot of complaints that they made it hard to find the fee option to get people to sign up for the paid one, and they're saying they're going to update it to make it more clear.

So far I'm not sure if it's doing much.  Hard to trust that they'll make it work well when they're pushing the paid version so hard.

Things died down for awhile but they are really back in force the last couple weeks.  They are doing number spoofing outside my own first 6 numbers also.

And, to make it worse I'm getting calls back to me as people are using my number to spoof other people asking why I called them.

They are getting smarter about number spoofing too, they are using numbers that are actually listed and show up on hiya so it comes in as some warehouse or a carpet installer, things that you aren't as suspicious of.

I feel it too.

There has got to be something that can be done. I got no clue tho.

These f'ers on are on fire today.  And I'm getting calls from "unknown" numbers so I can't block them.  Ugh....

My personal cell has been doing ok, but my work cell has been getting up to 30 calls a day.  All different numbers, all telling me my SS# has been suspended.

Yup that's the one I'm getting... 3-4 a day, all from unknown number.  And iPhone is so stupid, can't block unknown numbers.  Infuriating.   :hot:
