The injury happened on a running play during 11-on-11 team drills about an hour and 20 minutes into the Saints' morning practice. With Aaron Stecker carrying the football to the left, Brown went down in a heap after apparently getting tangled up with defensive end Josh Cooper.

Brown, a third-year pro, was carted off with his jersey over his face after trainers worked on him for about five minutes.

Already speculation at the saintsreport.com forums that he is done for the year.

Payton will apparently address it very soon:

(A post from the boards over there):

Sean Payton is expected to address the injury following practice and Jim will have the latest on Eyewitness News at Noon and on WWLTV.com.

Ouch!

Is it just me, or have there been alot of knee injuries thus far compared to other years? Someone probably says this every year.

Brown was the 13th selection overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played right tackle his rookie year before moving to left tackle to protect Drew Brees' blind side in 2006. He was named All-Pro by the Associated Press and was a first team Pro Bowl selection.

whoever it is that takes over for Brown, you can bet that TE mark campbell will be next to him. eric johnson is a fine receiving TE but the man is a weak blocker. campbell can do a little catching but is a superior blocker compared to the competition. i don't know that many were expecting big things from the TE position for this team, given the amount of offensive talent on this team, but still...

I'm pretty sure he played RT as he was up against Carolina's Julius Peppers all the time...and dang good too.

Article on ESPN.com says he was down on the ground about 20 minutes before they carted him off... doesn't sound good.

A little more from nola.com:

JACKSON, MISS. - Saints All-Pro left tackle Jammal Brown suffered a right knee injury during the Saints' morning practice session on Tuesday and needed to be carted from the field.

The severity of the injury is unknown, but the concern was evident as General Manager Mickey Loomis, Coach Sean Payton and even owner Tom Benson gathered around the fallen Pro Bowler while trainers treated him.

The injury occurred on the second play of live running drills. While engaging a defensive linemen near the end of the play, Brown toppled to the field and immediate grabbed his knee. He writhed on the field in obvious pain and could be seen wiping his face with his jersey as he lay prone on the field. He lay on the field for several minutes before he was helped to the motorized cart. He could not bear weight on the injured leg when he finally got to his feet.

Brown has endured knee problems for much of his career. He wears knee braces on both knees during practice and games. He was voted to the Pro Bowl last season but skipped the game in order to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. Brown said last week he was still experiencing slight pain in the knee.

"It's a little sore but I just got to fight through it," Brown said as he limped slightly from the interview tent.

I could see this leading to second-guessing of the coaching staff. Should he have been practicing at all, etc.

from wwltv.com:

Head coach Sean Payton said he didn't want to speculate on the severity of Brown's injury until it has been examined. Payton said the trainer initially looked at the knee and said it appeared 'stable' which he said was better than it appearing to be loose.

Good news there. I would also think that would rule out a ruptured pattella because the trainers would not think about performing a ligament stress test.If the swelling was bad enough during the tests they could get a false possitive.

Just watched the noon report from wwltv.com and they said they'll know more later this afternoon on the severity of the injury. They had some video footage of the play Brown got injured on and he seemed to be able to put some weight on the leg when he was helped to his feet. Payton sounded optimistic but seeing the pain Brown appeared to be in as he was carted off makes me think he'll be out for some time.

Zach Strief, whom Payton also called out for poor play in the HOF game, would start at LT in Browns absence.

Just watched 5pm news (WWLTV.com)

Jim Henderson reported no ligament or cartilage damage; Just a bone bruise with some swelling and Brown should be back sometime during the preseason.

From NewOrleansSaints.com

BREAKING NEWS: BROWN'S INJURY DIAGNOSED AS BRUISE; KNEE STRUCTURALLY INTACT

NewOrleansSaints.com has learned from Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager that Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown has suffered a bruised right knee. The results of an MRI taken this morning show that there is not any structural damage to his knee.

The Saints are going through their afternoon practice and NewOrleansSaints.com will be in attendance following practice to speak to Saints head Coach Sean Payton.

At this time, there is not a definitive period set forth as to how much time Brown is expected to miss, however the report is certainly a best-case scenario for the Saints.

LUCKY break (pun intended)

Damn, the Saints must be feeling a lot better about themselves at this point.

Hoo.

Is this kind of thing lingering? Could it allow him to play, but limit his effectiveness for a chunk of the season (similar to turf toe)?

If it really is a bone bruise, then no, when it heals, it won't linger. The saints need to handle him with kid gloves for the rest of August, but this is great news for them.

4 - 6 weeks to totally heal. Afterwards there is no likelihood of the injury lingering or leading to recurrence.
