San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (1 Viewer)

Per Schefter:

And with RB Raheem Mostert announcing today that he is out for the season with a knee injury he sustained vs. Detroit, the 49ers now are signing former Lions’ RB Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad, per his agent @DrewJRosenhaus.

Sidenote: Johnson was just on the Eagles practice squad. Guess who we play next week? 😉

I just can’t believe how fragile Mostert is. If the guy could stay healthy, he’s a top tier talent, sucks!

Mitchell looked great, Sermon, etc… not a huge area of concern at RB, tbh.

Defense def looked out of sync, especially at the end of the game, but they did get the job done with it all on the line, so I’ll look to the positive.

When we shut them down on 4th down, and Jimmy fumbled the snap on the next play, I was in shock! He settled down and looked good, but I’ve never been in his camp. We have Trey cheap for the next few years, I think he needs to play, def a conundrum.

I’m cautiously optimistic, but I still feel like we have a top tier defense. They dropped the ball a little this week, but the game was mostly in hand by then.

After what happened to us in week 2 last year, I’m terrified of this upcoming week.

I hope they give sermon a chance to carry the rock as well.  Again he appears to be in the doghouse so who knows

The D really looked worrisome to me.  I mean, they may have just been flat because it was the lions, but they got no pressure and there were lots of holes
I’m starting to wonder if Shanahan should recuse himself from personnel decisions. Spending significant draft capital on Sermon was dumb given that the RB coach finds undrafted or late drafted gems every year, and it doubly hurts if Sermon isn’t going to be great. (I know that’s a week 1 overreaction, but that’s why we’re here.)

the interior of the DL has been a mess since Buckner left. Ford and Bosa bringing pressure off the edges doesn’t mean much when the guys in the middle can’t hold down the fort. I’m more worried about that than losing Verrett.

It also hurts Sermon as a person because he could have been great somewhere else.  Lots of people thought he was the most pro ready.  I was pretty excited to see the guy play.

It was hard to watch during the detroit game for sure.  There is going to be running room on the 49ers if they don't get it together and fast.

“49ers claimed RB Trenton Cannon off waivers from the Ravens.

The claim serves as a stinging indictment of Trey Sermon, who the team made a healthy scratch in Week 1. The loss of Raheem Mostert should have been enough to get Sermon on the gameday roster but Cannon entering the mix puts that in doubt. San Francisco added Sermon in the third round of the draft this year but Kyle Shanahan has clearly been disappointed with his performance in practice so far. Sixth-round rookie Elijah Mitchell rushed 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in his Week 1 debut. If Sermon is passed on the depth chart by Cannon, he can officially be written off for fantasy purposes.”

😳

I think this a bit of an overreaction to the Cannon signing. I could be wrong but I think Sermon is still a part of the plan.

Rotoworld, so take it with a grain of salt for the color they add, and I certainly agree with you because if true, it is a stinging indictment of sermon.

my expectation was Sermon would be an automatic call-up & would have a chance to prove his draft stock.

the doghouse exit may not be that easy though.

Please. This is obviously a ploy to motivate Trey Sermon.

I mean, I have no idea what’s going on with Sermon or if motivation is the issue.

it’s a weird situation, and it’s frustrating as a Niners fan. I have no FF holdings in this backfield except a share of Hasty on a dynasty roster in full rebuild, so he isn’t relevant to my thoughts here.

its just weird. They spent quite a bit of draft stock to get Sermon.

Shanahans ego/antics are starting to really get on my nerves. Players get in his doghouse and he refuses to play them, which hurts the team, as well as affecting the players' confidence.

Play the players you drafted in the higher rounds for F sake!!! Either they play good or they don't, but unless they play we won't know. We all saw Dante Pettis have a nice 2nd half of his rookie season, and Shanny never gave him a chance after that, and he never rebounded. Idiotic. Don't keep Sermon off the field, let's see what the kid can do.

As far as Aiyuk goes, if he has a hanmy issue, fine, but why let him return punts but not play WR? Makes no sense. Either rest him til he's 100% or let him play the position you drafted him to play.  I for one don't really care of he drops passes in practice, Sundays are completely different. We've all seen him make plays, we all know he's a YAC monster, let him do what he does.

Frustrating.

Random thought, but when Lance hit Sherfield on that bomb in preseason, it just reminded me of how bad of a deep thrower Garoppolo is. Like as in not just below average, but BAD. I can't even recall a single instance in a 49er uniform that he hit a WR in stride on a deep pass. One of Peyton's strengths was catching the defense playing run and making them pay on deep bombs to Marvin Harrison, but instead Garoppolo makes them pay on PA passes with 20 yard ins? whoopuhdeedo...

I also wish they'd stop w/ this pistol RPO silliness with Lance and just let him play ball. Wasn't the whole reason he was appealing was that he had done a bunch of under the center PA stuff w/ his back to the defense? Why are they having him reenact the kaepernick years?

The first half was rough but Jimmy rebounded pretty good against that tough Philly front.

Jimmys final stats:

22-30, 189 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 100.6 rating.

@JohnLundRadio via twitter:

Jimmy Garoppolo now 26-8 as #49ers starter, today perfect example why. Started shaken by wild Philly road crowd, off target in 1st qtr, 3-7 19 yds. From there, hit 19 of last 23 throws, led two 90+ yard TD drives, two key sneaks, one for first TD, one to seal game. #Winner

Stand by this, he looked half respectable bc the Lions.

He sucks.

Norman looks really bad too. Two critical PI calls against in the first half.
I thought today was a good example of why they kept Jimmy.  I very strongly suspect Lance would have struggled badly given the lack of a run game and the OL allowing a lot of penetration.  Jimmy was pretty inaccurate in the first half but had the composure to successfully guide the team down the stretch.

This game was won by the defense bending, but not breaking. Deebo was the offensive hero, IMO (but the offense as a whole didn’t look good at all).

My mentality is simple; SB or bust. While IDK if Lance is the guy, I know Jimmy is not.

Also, the loss of Verrett and what it means to the defense was painstakingly obvious to me today. We were already thin there.

Ravens: We're going to have all the best RBs from 2016!

49ers: Hold my Anchor Steam.

(What's funny is that I realized after I wrote this that I literally had Miller and Latavius as my top two RBs in 2016 and Bell, Miller and Duke in 2017. And I'm sure I had Yeldon as well at some point.)

I know we're 2-0 but I don't understand how right guard has been a problem for this team for what feels like the entire Shanahan era.The fact that they whiffed on Banks is starting to become a serious problem. It bothers me that not only was he not a schematic fit, but also just not ready to play. Watch to see if they sign a veteran guard later this season... it will be a sign that they've more or less given up on Banks.

49ers RBs tonight:

Trey Sermon, No. 28

Kerryon Johnson, No. 48

Trenton Cannon, No. 49

Jacques Patrick, No. 35

Geez, 3 of these guys were signed in the past week or so.

3 weeks in and I feel like the defense is just going to be the achilles heal this year.  No pressure and no coverage.

That and Jimmy G is a loser...he's just not a winner.

Terrible start and script for Sermon. I was hoping to see something. Maybe we see it in the second half.

No K'Waun, no Norman, and of course no Greenlaw.

Just too much to overcome tonight in the secondary against Rodgers.

Also, we really need Mitchell back.

Seattle next. Let's get it!!

1) add CB to the list of positions that SF has been totally unable to develop young talent at. 2) this team’s title window closed the moment Buckner left - a questionable decision at the time that has aged poorly. 3) this team is in an awkward spot - a Jimmy led team will never be a contender absent an amazing defense and run game, and they have neither. At the same time, the roster seems too talented (and old) to totally waste a season developing an extremely raw QB.

Who else is secretly kinda rooting for them to lose so we can see more Lance?

I'm not gonna lie, this ain't a Superbowl team. Shanny looked like he had to pull out all the tricks in the bag to try and manufacture a running game. And Jimmy, for as much as he looked liked a hero for a few minutes, is just not good enough to take you over the top. Teams will dare him to beat them on deep throws outside the hash and I don't think he can do it. Instead his receivers will just keep getting clobbered over the middle. I'm not going to blame the defense for this one, they did ok considering the injuries and being -2 on turnovers.

Unfortunately the deeper problem is just how many whiffs this team has had in the first 2 days of the draft. There was a shot of Lynch in the booth and he looked like a guy that was concerned about his job.

This is a good post across the board.

GB CBs running on fumes last night and we couldn't do anything.  Our oline looked completely overmatched again against some real nobodies some of the time.  What happened to these guys?

If you are hoping josh norman is going to plug the holes at cb i have some swampland to sell you in florida.  This defensive backfield is terrible.

It does borderline feel like they are in rebuild mode.  Bosa looks like a shell of his formal self.  They should trade him while he is still worth something.  That dline is getting bossed around in every game

You had me until the Bosa part, unless you are convinced he’s a guy that’s just never going to stay healthy. There’s just no one else on the defensive line who offensive lines constantly need to account for. Bosa dominated one on one on the first drive, and then GB made a more concerted effort to take him out of the game, and nobody else could take advantage of the extra attention he was getting. For a guy coming off an ACL tear, Bosa has been a bright spot.

Bosa looked fine to me... he's not gonna get 2 sacks every game. The packers clearly made an emphasis on rodgers getting rid of the ball quickly.

I don't think Bosa looked like garbage or anything but i think he definitely looks like he is still trying to get in the flow of things.

He has a lot of value right now so the 49ers just have to ask themselves what they are doing.  They are going to have to pay him huge soon especially after the Watt deal

This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read in a 49er thread. Have you seen Bosa the past 2 games before last night? SMH.

As for the game, the fact that we had Green Bay beat even with all the injuries and sloppy play is reason to not start freaking out. I don't know what the deal was last night, but I think it had to do with preparation, maybe we were too cocky, thinking we would roll through them because of the players that were out for GB on defense and their OLine,  maybe we got caught up in the fact that it was our home opener and thought the crowd would be a factor, or maybe Green Bay just wanted it more, I don't know, but play was just sloppy on both sides of the ball. DPI penalties killed us and kept GB drives alive...if we don't make those mistakes as well as Jimmy's bonehead fumble, I think we win the game.

Also...anyone notice Rodgers kept testing Lenoir (and winning)? I kept screaming for Shanahan or Jimmy to go after the Packers rookie CB Stokes, who was playing due to Kevin King being out...one of the times we did, he got called for DPI...we should have been throwing his way all game to exploit the rookie but it didn't happen. Frustrating.

Shanahan definitely doesn't trust Sermon or any of the other RBs that are healthy right now, and it showed. We need our top RBs for the offense to go, there's no way around it, and we STILL came back and took the lead with 37 seconds left. With Mostert out for the year,  it's gonna be tough sledding unless the young guys (and Wilson when he comes back) can stay healthy.  Hopefully Sermon will get better the more he plays...he needs to be more decisive and run downhill though,  he's a bit too dancy behind the LOS. That should come with more playing time and carries. If we can't run the ball effectively, our offense isn't gonna be pretty. At all.

Bottom line is Green Bay barely beat us even though we looked terrible for most of the game. I wanna see Dre Kirkpatrick active next week (last year he played in 14 games and started 11 of those for Arizona and finished with 56 tackles, seven passes defensed and three interceptions)...and  for the love of god I hope Donte Johnson never sees the field again, he's easily one of the the worst defenders in the league and I don't get why he's still on the roster.

As for Lance...I DO want to see him get more snaps. Shanahan should rotate him and Jimmy more often like he did against Green Bay in week 1, but listen. The plan was never to let Lance start this season. Jimmy is gonna be the guy this year unless we fall out of the playoff hunt, period. I know a lot of people hate that, but it's a fact. We are 2-1 right now, the wheels aren't falling off (yet anyway), and Lance needs time to develop, especially in this system. If we finish 12-5, that's prob good enough to get in the playoffs, so another few losses as the season goes isn't gonna a prompt a QB change. Just accept it. Jimmy and his salary will be gone after this season, so we should be in good shape cap wise, and Lance will be behind center in 2022.

So we've got to tighten some things up, but I'm nowhere near throwing in the towel and writing this team off. We are absolutely still a contender, and if we could just stop losing players to injury every single week we would be in much better shape.

Mostert isn’t coming back and while I like Jeff Wilson, it’s asking too much for him to be a savior. They’ll have to have a couple of the newbies step up, and they’ll have to get more comfortable airing it out more consistently and on early downs.

I forgot Mostert is out for the year, I edited my above post. I think Mitchell, Hasty, Wilson and Sermon will be fine if they can stay healthy.

Welp. Maybe we will get to see more Lance going forward, but this team is cursed with injuries for some reason.

Time to start thinking draft next year.

SF needs a new medical team.  There's got to be something wrong for them to have been this injured two years in a row.
I’ve been saying this for a couple years, but… I think this year’s problems go deeper. The offense has been a mess, period. Not sure if that’s because they can’t get the offensive line figured out, Shanahan is slipping, or they did a really poor job of filling out the RB room.

I've noticed a distinct lack of presnap motion from the bits of games I've seen.  I wonder if that's because of the injuries to the rbs and has limited the playbook.  Deebo is having a breakout year though, so there's some good news for the offense.

The training wheels need to be taken off Lance. Game plan can’t be to run this read option every play. He isn’t a Tom Rathman hybrid. We mortgaged our future for him so let’s limit the punishment he takes. He’s big, fast, and has a rocket for an arm. Let him go out make mistakes, learn from them, and let’s see if he can shine.

The Seahawks have now beaten the 49ers three straight times and 13 of the last 15 times they have played. The two SF wins came by a total of 8 points, and one required OT.

Have a pleasant day. :)

Oh no, we suck again
Honestly, the defense looked good for almost the entire first half, borderline great (even with that mediocre secondary).

But I can't fault them for this. When you're getting zero support from the offense, it's difficult to maintain that same intensity.

I also came to a conclusion yesterday that the play calling is outright awful. In times when we're averaging 5 ypc, it can mask that, but when that isn't working, it's very transparent. The league figured this read option out during the RG3 days, let's completely toss that please! Outside of the fact that we're going to get the guy we traded our next 2 drafts for killed, this isn't the NCAA. Use his mobility on bootlegs, scrambles, etc... He also needs to learn the game from the pocket. He has the tools, let's try not to screw this up.

Now that we have a QB with a legit rocket for an arm, and a game plan usually based off of the run, we need to start taking more deep shots and I hope that's what Trey does. Aiyuk and Deebo are two legit burners, let's use them for more than 7 yard posts and outs. (I'm disregarding Deebo's long TD here bc that was just blown coverage). We need to get them up the field a little more and that'll open Kittle up underneath. Just terrible play calling and hopefully they adjust.

They’re about to start pulling fans out of the stands to play in the secondary, which is their biggest Achilles heel right now.

I will concede this:

Oddsmakers had us at 10.5 wins this season, and we started 2-0 which is usually a recipe for getting to the playoffs (>75%). My hopes were sky high up until 37 seconds left in their previous game, amazing how quickly that turned.

Sadly, it is now looking like this will be a lost season. I'm giving Trey a lot of rope and I have no issues with seeing some bad football out of him. Let him learn the game, he'll make mistakes. If he is the future, we need to start now.
