San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (2 Viewers)

Say he stays with the team - they refuse to trade him. Whether or not he plays, after this season the 49ers can use the non exclusive tag on him, and if they decide not to match any offer he signs and he leaves, they would get 2 first round compensatory picks, no?

If that's the case then I see no reason for them to trade him. He can sit or play, but we'll get two 1st round picks after this season. Why settle for less right now in any trade offer? Then again, maybe theyll decide to trade him so they can draft a replacement WR for Lance to develop with instead of waiting til 2023.

Here's the non exclusive tag explained, copied from here

Non-exclusive franchise tag: The non-exclusive franchise tag is the most commonly used method to keep unrestricted free agents from hitting the market. The one-year tender offer pays a player the average of the top five salaries at the respective position over the last five years, or 120 percent of his previous salary — depending on whichever is greater. In the meantime, the player can negotiate with other teams but the club applying the tag has the right to match any offer or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation in case the player leaves.
Let's say Deebo doesn't play this year...yes he's cutting his nose off but it also is going to put a dent in that multiple 1st round picks idea you put forth.

-My observations this off season is that WRs are calling the shots right now. Maybe their agents are running the ship, seems unlikely they all had a meeting and came out with the game plan to kick and scream their way into a new contract on a new team. On the surface that seems like a terrible battle plan but in fact that actually has been working to most of their favors although I never heard Hill say he wanted OUT of KC, think they just decided it as easier to bring in new blood at WR vs paying him $30M a year or whatever my Phins are shelling out.

Miami happens to be one of the buyers in this recent Gold Rush at WR. I can't sit here and say for sure how they will perform because we have questions at QB, but I am confident we did the right thing going to get Hill using mostly the picks we had left from 2022. This class is a little weak and I'm sure there are gems to be found but I think sure things are a premium at the moment.

Hill, Adams and I'll say Diggs doing it for 2 teams now...they seem to have longer track records than Deebo Samuel.

This is a rough spot for the fan base, I wouldn't turn on Deebo immediately but this does look pretty childish and selfish...but it's the NFL in 2022, every man for themselves, mostly.

Things are not going well in Arizona with Murray, when players turn off their social media accounts or unfollow their employer that pays them and whom they want paying them a truckload more, that seems like terrible optics. Could you ever imagine Tom Brady behaving in a manner like this? I'm not talking about his wizardry behind the curtains...for example he was present front row when Arians announced his retirement...maybe it's scripted and I heard a lot of chuckling from different sports writers as to Brady's intentions but he is laser focused on optics and keeping up appearances  ;)  (he's got incredible plastic surgeons)

There's a rush because of the Draft of course and then the May 2nd deadline or the day when teams announce if they want to exercise team options, those decisions are life changing and its playing out in front of our eyes.

Highly entertaining I might add when it's not your team.

Between the usage last year, the injury plagued sophomore season and the likelihood of a lessened stat line/ injury again in 22, and all these other wr contracts, it’s not like it’s a mystery why he sees this as good timing to push.

Don’t forget, shanny seems like kinda a dink. Look at the way he treated Aiyuk. Maybe it’s effective, similar to Belichick. But having a surly curmudgeon as your coach might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

I get that everyone is getting huge deals but I just don't think you overpay for this kid.  He's good but not great and a lot of it has to do with the system.  I suspect he would not be as successful on another team (say the jets).

As for the 49ers its a big blow with the Lance trade and Lance not being ready (so they say).  The rest of this team is ready so it will be interesting to see what they look like this year.

Yeah.  We all love Joe, but not sure he has much inside info and how Lance is progressing.

@Faust posted a couple of good links in the Trey Lance thread with Kittle and Lynch's comments. Imo, there's nothing to achieve by bashing the kid. I take anyone's opinion as just that, especially it they haven't been around the day-to-day workings of the team and/or Lance. Anyone being negative at this time either isn't a 49ers fan or just likes being Eeyore so that can say 'I told you so' if the worst-case scenario happens. I prefer not to be around either type but especially the latter.

That covers a lot of the fanbase who post on the 49er forums

I love talking football and discussing good moves and bad decisions.  But man, some of these guys are non-stop doom and gloomers.  Don't understand how they get any enjoyment out of watching a sport that is a form of entertainment.

I really don't get the Shanahan/Lynch hate.  After two years rebuilding the horrible roster they inherited, they have gone to a super bowl and an NFC championship game the last three years.  Could have easily been two super bowls if Tartt didn't drop the worlds easiest interception.  They obviously know how to build a team.  If Lance ends up hitting, they will contend for the next decade.  Have they made mistakes?  Sure, quite a few, but most were in the first couple years drafting players that didn't fit their scheme and overpaying for free agents.

Process-wise, I totally agree with the decision to trade up and the decision to take Lance. I think Lynch/Shanahan correctly  concluded that having an elite QB is the gateway to sustained success. Look at the Vegas Super Bowl odds, it's all top-end QBs, and the 49ers because the roster is there and Lance has that potential (which Garoppolo does not).

Whether Lance turns out to be a franchise QB or not, the move was correct imo, and I have the belief of a fan that he will develop into one.

I haven't followed much of the Deebo drama. Trading him will definitely hurt in the short-term, even moreso if the draft pick(s) don't pan out - see Kinlaw, Javon. I'm more concerned about how the O-line will be handled, especially if Mack retires. They'd need 3 new starters on the interior. Banks didn't show much, being a regular inactive. Moore was drafted to move inside. I think he'd be in the mix for one spot.

All eyes on the Deebo drama. I don't see a trade happening any time soon.

I was just thinking about the Dante Pettis and Jalen Hurd picks. If either of those guys panned out we'd be in a much different situation right now. And who knows, maybe  Deebo never even becomes a wideback.

Here's hoping to no whiffs in this draft, we can't afford any more early round busts.

Aiyuk isn't a bad substitute for Deebo at least.

I like Aiyuk, but hes more finesse, where Deebo is a bruiser. It's not easy to replace that junkyard dog mentality.

I hope they figure something out, if Deebo isnt here were gonna need WR help for sure. If they don't trade him, and he sits out (unlikely since money seems to be a motivator for him), not only do we not have Deebo, but we didn't get didn't get a high pick to draft a replacement and Lance has one less superstar to work with in his first year where his development is paramount.

Getting antsy for the draft to get underway....

I think it’s nearly impossible to sit out now after the latest CBA.

I think he’ll end up staying in SF. It’s actually the best thing for his career - albeit Lance would need to hit and Shanahan would need to hold on. They can always tell him they’ll limit his carries, and with healthy RBs they would, and in season if they wanted him to run the ball he’d probably want to when the adrenaline is flowing.

I understand your thinking process wise, but I think they could’ve risked just waiting and still gotten Lance. They gave up too much to let someone ride the bench, especially bc I don’t think anyone was jumping in the two spots between them and Miami to grab Lance.

ETA: no first round picks for 2 years is a disaster in this day and age.

You're mis-remembering the details I believe. The 49ers traded from 12 to 3, then Miami traded from 12 to 6 with Philly.

To move into the top 3 one month before the draft requires the investment of premium capital (2 future firsts). I've read that one of the reasons they made that move was to be in control over whom they would take, which would also contribute to the price paid, as well as having that month to do a deep dive into the prospects (Lance, Jones, Fields).

The first part of the plan was successful in that the 2022 pick was late. The other part of the plan less so in that I think that they expected to recoup same draft capital by trading Garoppolo this offseason. Indianapolis made a much worse move trading what ended up being a mid-first for Wentz and they still are band-aiding the position. At least Lance has the potential of being a long-term answer, until he shows that he isn't. If that is the case, the 49ers will have a 1st round pick in the drafts that they will need to invest in the position again. They are not going to do so this year or next imo.

This, and rumor was Atlanta was really high on Lance and would have taken him at 4

No first round pick for 2 years and we draft a rb with our limited picks...wtf?
Jackson and Gray I could see as 49ers. TDP was a definite head-scratcher. Parham, OL Memphis, went #90 to the Raiders who traded up for him. I wondered if they jumped us to get him. Nick Cross, DB Maryland, went #96 and was also a guy I thought could help this team.

Word is that they selected the RB in part to ease Deebo’s fear of being used too much as a wideback going forward. Is Trey Sermon one and done?

The selection of Davis-Price caught many by surprise considering the 49ers headed into the draft with plenty of experience and depth at the running back position. Starter Elijah Mitchell returns after a standout rookie season along with veterans Jeff Wilson and JaMychal Hasty, as does second-year back Trey Sermon, who didn't see as much time as expected in 2021 but could be in line for a bigger role this year. If the 49ers resolve their current dispute with Deebo Samuel, they'll be returning almost all of their rushing production from the 2021 season.

But that didn't stop them from selecting Davis-Price, who will add even more depth and talent to what was already a team strength.

The 49ers do have an injury history at running back, which was a big reason they decided to draft both Sermon and Mitchell in 2021 even though they already had Wilson, Hasty and Raheem Mostert on the roster. They needed both running backs to step up right away in 2021 due to injuries to Mostert and Wilson, then found themselves adding backs to the roster early in the season after other injuries. Shanahan clearly likes the idea of not being stuck in that situation again in 2022.

"I don't think you can have enough running backs," Shanahan said. "We took two last year. We were happy with our starter (Mostert) going into last year. We had other guys who had played well too, and we took two. And by the fourth game we're still having to steal other guys off other teams' practice squads just to fill enough guys to play in a game. So sometimes you can have good luck with guys staying healthy, sometimes not. So the more guys you can add the better."

The more I’m reading about Drake Jackson, the more I like him.

Everything negative seems highly coach-able to me. The weight fluctuation is a concern, but it also seems like he was a ‘tweeter DL/LB.

Before the season Jackson was thought to be a potential top 10 pick.

He’ll either be a bargain or a bust. I have a hard time seeing the later.

I like the idea of giving guys to Kocurek for him to coach up. Jackson's going to be one of the higher pedigree guys he's had so hoping that Kocurek unlocks another one.

Might want to reconsider on revising this topic's subject header to "49ers eat, chew, and spit out  day 2 or day 3 pick RB.   SMH on taking LSU RB Tyrion Davis-Price.  Maybe it's me but I dont see anything special in him.

RBs and WRs drafted by Shanahan and Lynch:

Joe Williams (4th), Sermon (3rd), Mitchell (6th), Davis-Price (3rd)

Trent Taylor (5th), Richie James (7th), Dante Pettis (3rd), Hurd (3rd), Deebo (2nd), Aiyuk (1st), Jennings (7th), Gray (3rd)

By my math, of those 12 picks, 5 are long gone, 3 are rookies or have not made an impact, and 4 were good picks (counting Jennings)

The biggest knock on Gray from what I've read is he has terrible hands. What?! A WR with terrible hands...great. So this guy can fly, but good luck when you throw it to him. Yikes. Fingers crossed on this one.

Also hearing Davis Price is a strange pick, but from what I'm reading, I can see them using him as a goal line and short yardage back. With Trey behind center, maybe they want a between the tackles guy for the RPO. I also hear hes good at pickup up blitzes and will be good in pass protection, so maybe that was their thinking.  Makes you wonder about Sermon though, and how much usage he will get.

Seems they have much better luck with UDFAs at RB. Brenda, Mostert, Jeff Wilson...all undrafted. Mitchell is the only drafted RB Shanny has had success with so far. Hopefully Sermon and Davis-Price will both contribute and be productive.

I’ve read that it may have been used as a sign to DeeBo that they were going to focus on running the football just with their tailbacks, and not subject him to those punishing runs up the middle. If that’s the case, and it works, then I get it.

Some pre-draft reports I've seen/heard say that Davis-Price's #1 trait is pass pro. I can see him taking over the 3rd down role as they had Hasty there last year. 3DRB and backup to Mitchell on early downs might be a decent role (for the team, not for fantasy)

49ers undrafted free agent signings:

Tay Martin, WR, Oklahoma State

Segun Olubi, LB, San Diego State

Taysir Mack, WR, Pittsburgh

Leon O’Neal, S, Texas A&M

Dohnovan West, C, Arizona State

Kevin Atkins, DT, Fresno State

Qwuantrezz Knight, CB, UCLA

Sam Schlueter, OL, Minnesota

Jason Poe, OL, Mercer

Jeremiah Gemmel, LB, UNC

Tayler Hawkins, DB, San Diego State

Jordan Mason, RB, Georgia Tech

As sure as the sun rises in the east, Shanahan will draft RBs.
Shanahan's mentee in Miami, Mike McDaniel, also wanted to use one of his 4 selections on a RB. But he got scooped by the Raiders who moved 3 slots in front of 4.20 to steal Zamir White, per my reading of the tea leaves.

But MM did get one of the top UDFA RBs, Zaquandre White. This is after getting Mostert and Edmonds earlier as free agents to compete with Gaskin, Ahmed, and last years 7th rounder Doaks.

Does Shanahan also pick up WRs like they're a dime a dozen? MM used the draft pick intended for  RB to pick a WR, then he signed 2 UDFA WRs, giving us 12. After trading for Hill and signing Cedric Wilson.

Never can have enough depth.

Well, 9 picks, which isn't exactly "limited"

They obviously are admitting that Sermon was a mistake and still need a power back which is what Davis is.  Was my least favorite pick of the draft, but obviously a big part of not wanting to give Deebo 6-8 carries a game next year.

Hopefully he hits, but already getting the "Sermon was a bust, so Davis will be too" narrative from the "I hate everything the 49ers do" part of the fanbase

I'm not equating the two either.  Wasn't a huge fan of the Sermon pick and there is lots of bad tape on Davis too.  Not much to get excited about there.

The 49ers are so good at plugging and playing rbs just seems like a really strange and wasted pick...

I feel like after the 2nd or 3rd Rd it's pretty much a crapshoot and we can all agree that it's wise to take an OG like the LAC did with Salyer I think the kid's name is but a fantastic IOL in the 6th Rd, that sometimes pays off.

The beauty of all these RB and WRs is that other than Aiyuk they didn't cost that much and the 2nd highest selection is Deebo and he has paid off fierce to the point he is whining about not playing and wants a new contract. (I may have described that situation not quite right but it's close, it's mostly about $$$ IMHO)

But three 3rd rounder, a 5th and a 7th, not out much on those. At RB they found Mitchell int he 6th, burned a couple 3rd rounders but the kid from LSU is better than some might see at first. He was high on a lot of insiders list that write for these NFL teams but also watch college football. The Miami Dolphins were looking at Tyrion Davis-Price, at least the ones who write the articles for all the different sites just like the ones specific to the Niners that many of you will peruse. Granted much of it feels fluffy but his name came up a couple times and I wasn't surprised the Niners took him.

Always room for another RB in Shanahan's system if you ask me. I'm sure he will be a hot camp topic.

I like Shanahan a ton, but one of his biggest strengths is the ability to turn guys without any draft pedigree into stud RBs. I can’t believe they keep investing all this capital into highly drafted RBs.

The interior of the OL (pass pro in particular) was the team’s biggest weakness last year, and I fear that will become a full blown crisis if they just replace Tomlinson and Mack with what they have on the roster right now (assuming Mack retires).  I don’t think it will be quite as crippling for Lance as it was for Jimmy, given Lance’s mobility, but I hope they have a plan there.

loved the early pick on a edge rusher. They need another plus pass rusher to make that line dominant and he looks like he might be able to do the trick.

I can’t imagine it will have a material impact on that situation. And in any event, SF needs to stop rushing Deebo so much anyway if they want to keep him on the field and out of the training room.
That would be the material effect. This is a RB who could run those plays, keeping Deebo on the field and out of the training room. Which has been speculated as the reason they drafted him. Which might be an attractive selling point to Deebo for remaining.

If I’m Deebo, why would I assume this guy is any better than the apparent bust they took in the third round last year with the same idea?  There’s no way he’s making career decisions based on that pick.

Agreed... This is why I'm somewhat exasperate with taking RB in 3rd round.  They dont have much draft capital and really need to reload their OL depth.

I’m not speculating on the quality of the RB.

The point that you seem to be evading here is that they might be telling Deebo, “we aren’t going to run you like we did last year. We drafted this guy to do that”.

You literally just said they need to stop running him like that, and writers have speculated that they may have drafted this RB to take that load off of Deebo.

Ipso facto, it may help to keep Deebo if Deebo knows he isn’t going to be used the same way.

Significant stretch to associate Sermon with this RB. Not even worth responding to that part.

Long answer short, drafting this guy doesn’t necessarily mean the rushing load will be lifted from Deebo, and Deebo would be rather foolish to bank on that.

Price is supposedly good at pass protection, so maybe they plan to use that strength. Maybe 2 back sets with Price staying home to block. They've used Kittle that way several times, so now maybe they have a RB that can handle it, which would free up Kittle to do his thing on those obvious passing downs.
