San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (2 Viewers)

Brock Purdy attempted only 3 passes and passed for 0 yards in the second half…and the 49ers won by 28.

That's insane. Complete domination.

So right now, the 2-3 seeds are looking at playing the Commanders/Giants/Seahawks/Lions in the first round. SF would probably be strongly favored against anyone in that crowd. The benefit in getting the #2 seed, I guess, would be getting to play Minnesota at home in the second round if both teams get that far.

But SF has to get there first. Maiocco just tweeted the reminder that Josh Johnson is in line to start if Purdy can't go Thursday, which is frightening.

The way the defense is playing, I think they will win out. Losing Deebo hurts of course, but enough weapons and seeing Purdy play such a good game against a pretty good defense makes me feel much better about him. Seems to be very in control of the situation.

#2 seed would be nice. Would much prefer to play the Vikings outside where Cousins isn't as comfortable.

But yeah, If Johnson has to start, that would be a challenge to overcome

Good to see the confidence Shanahan has in the kid. 18 passes in the first half and 37 last week. Definitely not babying him.

Also glad to see him close the game out with Mason instead of CMC. He's learning

He really needs to give Mason the GL carries. I don't get why he never does.

The defense's depth is going to be tested pretty badly. They could be starting Janoris Jenkins off the street at CB this week. They seem to be able to plug and play random guys at DT, but they are getting really thin there too.

Alright then!

49ers said WR Deebo Samuel suffered a sprained MCL and ankle, but is expected to return during the regular season

Per Schefter

Purdy is day to day with the oblique injury.

Update from Lombardi:

49ers released an estimated practice participation report for today even though they didn't actually practice, per NFL rules.

SF estimated that Deebo Samuel and Kevin Givens would've been OUT.

49ers also estimated Brock Purdy, Kerry Hyder and Ambry Thomas would've been LIMITED

49ers final injury report for TNF:

OUT
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot)
DL Kevin Givens (knee)
DB Tarvarius Moore (knee)
DL Hassan Ridgeway (pectoral)
WR Deebo Samuel (ankle, knee)
CB Samuel Womack (concussion)

Questionable
DL Kerry Hyder (ankle)
QB Brock Purdy (oblique, rib)
CB Ambry Thomas (ankle)

Big Ben thought about coming out of retirement to try to join the 49ers.

So dumb.

They’re only a bad hit to Purdy away from having to take the call, I guess.
I'm rooting for the improbable Josh Johnson story leading the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory. That'd be a pretty cool story of perseverance. Like Purdy too, but Johnson would be as good a story as we've ever seen on the crazy chance it happened, with all the teams and stops he's had in his career. If Purdy can't go, I hope he gets that shot.

Jordan Mason carries over the last 4 games:

4
5
8
11

I see a pattern here, and Seattle has the worst run defense in the league. Mason is averaging 5.3 ypc.

I see 15+ carries this week.

For FF, picked him up when he was dropped last night. Might actually play him since my 2nd RBs are dicey and Brian Robinson has an injury designation and a Sunday night game.

Mason looks good for a TD tonight

Super pumped for this game!

If Brock plays well tonight in that environment under the lights, on a short week, a bit banged up, you gotta think the kid might be the real deal.

Good thing you've added a fan to the base that understands this franchise.

Derrick Mason?

Only 4 players in NFL history have 15 sacks in back-to-back seasons:

DeMarcus Ware
J.J. Watt
T.J. Watt
and now...Nick Bosa

Alright, my expectations are officially the ceiling. Anything short of winning a Super Bowl this year will be a major disappointment. LFG!!!

Kyle Shanahan since 2019:

* 2 NFC West Titles
* 4 playoff wins (and counting)
* 2 NFCCG appearances
* 1 Super Bowl appearance
* 3, 10+ win seasons

Doing all of this with 4 different starting quarterbacks in that span.

And we've all called for him to be fired. Lol

Mason goes one more yard and I likely $1000 richer. Fant was the cheap lay tonight. If Mason goes one yard further and Bosa doesn't rough the passer I'd be driving a new car soon.

7 and 1 as a 49er fan. Super Bowl here we come.

This team isn't missing a beat with Purdy. Games will get tougher but I've never been a Garaoppolo believer and not sure how much of a disadvantage that will end up being.

Purdy will make some mistakes at some point. But this team is certainly set to make up for those mistakes if they aren't too catastrophic.

I still wonder where things would be with Trey Lance. Imagine if he would've learned to manage this passing game with his run ability athleticism. That was certainly the goal going into the season.

As a Seahawks fan I certainly don't want to see the 49ers succeed. But as a football fan, there is a lot to like about this team.

Good game tonight 49er fans. You won by 8 points but it certainly was more of a beat down than the point spread.

Hot damn are the Niners defenders good at tackling! As a Walker manager, I hated the fact that he never seemed to get those extra yards, but as a football fan I was duly impressed

Purdy just seems like the perfect QB for Shanahans system. We don't need a Mahomes or Allen, hell Jimmy G almost beat the Chiefs in the SB. Purdy is a smarter Jimmy G with more mobility, and that's all he needs to be.

With our defense, and Brock executing the way he is - and he should only get better with more playing time - we should be able to beat anybody.

Let's gooooo!!!!!!

I honestly Purdy looks calmer and more poised than JG
Yep

Small things matter. When Kittle was wide open for the 2nd TD, Purdy put it right on him. No breaking stride which allows for big RAC plays. Same with the play later to Kroft when he was wide open. Not a Jimmy hater (just want team to win) but those are the kind of plays that Jimmy throws off target and even if completed, they aren't as explosive plays.

When Jimmy got hurt in the Dolphins game, I never had a "the season is screwed" moment. I didn't expect this level of performance from Purdy, but didn't think he would be a big downgrade either.

Pretend the playoffs are starting tomorrow, and Jimmy comes out and says he can gut it out and play, but he's only, say, 80%. Who would you want to start?

If this was a poll, I think you'd only need one choice, which is crazy, cuz Jimmy has a ton of postseason experience, but at this point I trust Brock to do what he's asked and get the ball into his playmakers' hands.

He's gonna make mistakes, no doubt. He had one INT against TB called back because of a penalty. He threw one right into the chest of a Seahawk last night that was dropped. So, he could have 2 INTs in the last 2 games. Maybe it's luck, but he got away with those mistakes, and he WILL make mistakes going forward, but he seems like a guy who has short memory and learns from his mistakes.

On top of that he's got sneaky escapability and mobility, which is something we've all been wanting in our QB.

I for one am enjoying the hell out of this ride. In Brock we trust, at least for now.

How could a season be any better than losing a QB you traded the farm for, then losing a guy most fans hate and we had forced on us, then having Mr. Irrelevant QB us to our first SB win in almost 30 years?
