Savannah, Georgia and now maybe Asheville (1 Viewer)

It’s much nicer, not really close IMHO. Just like Asheville, Savannah has some great eats and hotels (stayed in Marriott’s autograph ones in both), but neither my wife nor I felt inclined to go back. We go back to Hilton Head every year with friends although that’s for a beach trip and we’d go back to Charleston. My wife is going there tomorrow on a school trip with my youngest. I did it with my middle son a couple years ago. Not as much fun with the school but still nice.
I should go back to Hilton Head. We went probably 25 years ago and loved it.

Did you try their food?..Very good and reasonable....Open Face Roast Beef w/mashed potatoes and collard greens...yum!
We didn't plan to but hung at the bar for a couple hours and kept seeing and smelling the food and decided to stay. Really good.

You Can't Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe was based in Asheville, right?

Knew a girl from there once. Got me into the Refused. Total hipster city, from what I can recall.

Didn't like Asheville, too hipster for me and lots of homeless, or at least homeless looking people. Would never go back. Not a fun walking city. Some really good food though.
This is why I said YMMV about Asheville.  Different people will have different reactions.  I love walking around there and brewery hopping.

You also have a mountains vs. beach thing when comparing to Charleston/Savannah, so time of the year for travel is important.

Maybe this has been answered, but what time of year are you looking at?  If it's summer, Asheville seems like a no-brainer due to the higher elevation and less humidity.

You could easily swing Charleston and Savannah on the same trip.  Driving highway 17 along the coast between the two is something I find particularly beautiful.
Multi town was my first thought too. Savannah is a cool town, but 2 day-1 night has felt about right. No real interest in doing any more, but will also go back the next time we vacation in Hilton Head.

Heading to Savannah on Tuesday for a 3 day leadership offsite.  Colleton River Club. Not sure if I'll get a chance to venture out but if I do will report back

Time to bump this thread and catch up on what I was told. Headed to Savannah on Thursday and then up to Charleston. Any last minute directions?

It’s on my wife’s bucket list. I want to surprise her on an upcoming trip where she thinks we are headed to family in TN and I want to head on over to Savannah.

So, if I want to stay for three days and two nights, what part of town do I target (I’ve heard there are parts of town i probably don’t want to be in), restaurants to try, and any other tips?
Re-upping this because I'm doing the same. VDay gift is a trip here in April for the week (Mon-Fri). How did your trip go? Any more recent tips/advice, than what's already been offered?

We did Charleston two years ago and will eventually do Asheville.

We stayed at the Foley House.  It was awesome and even had some weird haunting things going on.  Seemed to be fairly centralized for stuff to do within walking distance.

We ended up spending two days in Savannah and going to a couple of concerts during their music festival (google for this years dates). We had a blast!

Restaurants we tried:

We only spent a night and morning in Asheville passing through. We want to get back and spend some time there! We did have a decent dinner and an amazing breakfast

We're staying at the 1790, as it's another of the supposed "haunted" places to stay and is right near the Foley House, so seems like a good location. We had a great time in Charleston with no rental car, just walking or taking the free bus. Looking to do the same here: just chill and spend time walking, exploring old/historic type things, and living the Savannah life for 5 days.

Look up some of the Haunted Pub Crawls.  We did one and it was fun.  Kind of hokey at times but still fun.  You go to a few haunted bars and get the a drink or two at each spot.  Then walk to the next one.  I thought it was worth it.

Five days? I am not sure we could have done just Savanna for five days but there are some other things near by.

Would have been useful if I had realized BEFORE planning a November trip to Asheville that the weather there is almost the same as it is in New Jersey!

So, this planned Savannah trip in April 2020 wound up never happening because of COVID. But, we're now going to Asheville next month so circling back for any current tips or recommendations. Caught an episode of Delicious Destinations on the Cooking Network that was all about Asheville but it must have been from a few years back/pre-COVID as a few of the places they showed aren't around anymore when I looked some of them up.

Staying in a rented mountain house in Burnsville for the week but plan on being in Asheville for at least the Biltmore one day and a date night without the kids another day. Maybe do Dollywood, too, but other than that still looking for things to do. I know there's a ton of breweries but don't drink so unless there's also good food, they probably won't be worth going to.

Tried Tupelo Honey for dinner and Sunny Point Cafe for breakfast. Enjoyed both but can’t remember details.

I mostly go for the beer

Beer in Asheville is awesome - you should just start drinking.
Cider is awesome too. My wife and I did a spring break trip from DC to Asheville, 10 days total, 5 in Asheville...those final five days were just a blur of BBQ, other good food, and cider constantly.
