Say Goodbye Mangini (1 Viewer)

ESPN claiming Cowher wont interview unless the Jets fire tannenbaum and let Cowher install his own personel guy. Ugh.I'd rather get cowher, but Tanny hasnt done a bad job. Yeah, the favre thing didnt work out, but it was still a move we had to make. Tannembaum has hit some absolute grandslams on the middle rounds of the draft. Gholston is obviously looking pretty ugly so far, but its too early to judge.Gun to my head, i think i'd fire Tannembaum if if meant getting cowher.
I get that Cowher is considered the Holy Grail of coaching hires right now, but why would you hand over personnel decisions to him? He's got zero experience running a franchise; and adding those responsibilities to his plate means less focus on what we know he does well, coach.
From what i read, it just seems like he wants to pick the GM (not be the GM). I know that means that he'd basically be running the show, but i do think there'd be some seperation of power. I just think this franchise needs to take a huge leap of faith here. Tannenbaum as GM with Cowher as coach is the dream scenario, but if that isnt gonna happen, i think the coach is more important. This team has a few holes (QB, OLB, S are the biggest) but i think the current team would have made a run if it werent for Manigni and Sutton's ineptitude.

OK, now THAT I understand, and even agree with. I recall that Cowher sometimes butted heads with the personnel men in Pittsburgh [even though it obviously worked out for the better] and could see where he would want to make sure the GM and he had a good rapport. If that's what's going on, versus Cowher wanting to be in total control, I say get rid of Mike T in a hurry.

So Gholston was probably one of the worst picks ever huh.
it looks ugly so far. He made zero impact this year. In the denver game, he actually had a chance to sack Cutler. Instead, he tippi-toed for 25 yards and pushed him with 2 fingers just as cutler lets go of what turned into like a 25 yard pass play. The guy has no idea what he's doing in coverage and hasnt adjusted to playing without his hand on the ground. Thats somewhat understandable considering what his role was at OSU. But the guy had no excuse not to make a play when the only thing between him and the QB's blind side was 30 feet of New Jersey air. I'm just praying he's a servicable backup next year.

If it's that bad they should trade him to a team running a 4-3. He still has trade value.

With that contract? I'm pretty sure the cap hit would be massive. No way that happens after 1 year.

I never get upset when a fanchise drafts the concensus pick in a draft not loaded with definite talent. I get upset when a team trades 2 1st round picks for the next combine stud like Dewayne Robertson in a draft supposedly loaded at that position or When they go off the board and draft Brian Thomas when everyone screamed Ed Reed. We'll see with Gholston - He was a major project at OLB coming from DE and missing part of camp...People say the #6 pick should play but, I think the Jets made the pick looking at what the Giants did the year before having a lot of pass rushers in the pipeline and knowing Gholston wasn't going to crack the starting lineup much with Calvin Pace and Brian Thomas now playing well at the OLB spots -so, they felt they could afford to bring VG along and use him at times as a pass rusher, which didn't even turn out that good.Next year we'll see for sure - And at this point who knows if the Jets won't go back to a 4-3 with a new coach and have VG playing DE where he should be more comfortable.

the DeWayne Robertson pick was one of the dumbest moves in history. That draft was loaded with DT's. (and defensive studs in general) Kevin Williams, Terrell Suggs, calvin Pace, Troy Palamaulu, Ty warren, Nmadi Asomugha and Marcus Trufant all went after D-Rob. The jets could have had 2 of them. Awful.

edit: and thats just the first round.

2nd round- Rashean Mathis, Osi Umenyiora, Ken Hamlin

3rd Round- Lance briggs

4th- Assante Samuel

Makes me want to puke. I was also SCREAMING for them to take Jason Witten. I hate this franchise so much.

In retrospect, sure. But let's not forget that Belichick tried to trade up ahead of the Jets to grab Robertson. Talent evaluation on an individual player level is so difficult, it's unfair to judge a GM and his lieutenants on that basis. You have to look at their collective body of work; as well as how they handle the cap situation. From that perspective, Mike T has done a decent job IMHO. A great job? No. But solid? I would say so as an unbiased observer.

Ask any Pats fan and they'll say that was just put out there to get the Jets to panic and I believe it, it's not like BB often trades top picks at the top of the draft like that. - regardless, you don't spend TWO 1st round picks on the guy when a draft has 6-7 DT's slated for the 1st round.... As I said at the time - If you make a move like that then you better not have one sliver of doubt that this guy is going to be an absolutes stud. You better be ready to offer up one of your children betting on this. And to top it off Terry Bradway came out and basically said "the fans were upset after we lost a bunch of players to the Skins and we wanted to make a splash".. IDIOT!And to top THAT off, it later came out that Robertson had a knee condition in college and a lot of teams just crossed him off their lists. Buffoon!!!!But, this wasn't a judgement on Tannenbaum IMO - at that point he was the cap guru - this was Bradway and just an example of why I cannot put th eGholston pick in the same class of the stupidity we've seen - the pick wasn't stupid - even though it could be a bust like any pick.

So much for the "Mangenius" tag, I guess.
The true Mangenius is in Lawrence, KS.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him pop up as a college coach somewhere.
Agreed, although he'll likely get another chance in the NFL.
Not sure about that. There was a lot of grumbling around the league about how Mangini conducted himself both in the Spygate situation and earlier when he tried to convince Pats personnel to jump ship while still employed by the team, as well as stealing a laptop with confidential files on his way out the door. I remember a NY Times piece a while back that said that some NFL front office folks would consider Mangini "toxic" if he were up for another NFL coaching gig.Time will tell, I guess.
He's done pretty well, on the field, and considering what some other coaches are able to get away with and get another chance, I think he will. Although it might take some time. His best plan would be to head to college and work his way back up. Some good mid-level or poor BCS conference school will give him a nice gig next year I think.

Iowa State?
I know Pats fans love the SpyGate angle but, honestly, there aren't a lot of HC jobs in this league and there's a lot of people with better credentials than Mangini around and newer "Hot" coordinators to give a shot....Guys like Rod Marinelli and Romeo Crennel were considered top top coordinators in this league, they should get a shot again before EM...And that list goes on.

It was shocking that Herm got another HC gig but, he had buddies in the right spot - Eric does not...

EM IMO won't bve a HC in this league again, but, it has little to nothing to do with Spygate.
:tinfoilhat:

OK, so Mangenius gets the Browns gig and apparently Romeo is willing to swallow any semblance of pride and stay as the DC. In the meantime, John Clayton just said - wait for it - that Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer - are leading contenders now that the big dogs all stepped out of the running.
