Shooting At Aurora, Colorado Movie Theater (1 Viewer)

:confused:Those guys arguing for strict regulation of gun sales - wouldn't this guy likely have qualified for a weapon still under those despite the law? After all, the guy was a good student, citizen, no priors, bright, etc.
The "assault rifle" is always the target when this stuff happens. Because Hand guns, shotguns and rifles aren't dangerous.

First time I've had access to the web all day. What a horrific story.

Forgive me for not wanting to browse through 17 pages, but were any FBGs or their families affected by this?

You guys realize there are other weapons out there than guns, right?
The point has been made several times today that if crazy people want to kill, they'll do it regardless of regulations or the availability of weapons. The only thing that can really be done is try to spot the signs sooner.

Sorry, just disappointed the last few pages devolved into a gun discussion. I know I'm not helping turn that around.

Anyone with updates on the guys motivations?

But that statement is completely irrelevant to this discussion where it appears an otherwise fine citizen (presumably then qualified to obtain a gun under the strictest regulations) undertook a very in depth plan (so in depth and premeditated it appears a few regulatory laws wouldn't have stopped him).

i

The world has gone off the rails.
Find me a story of this happening in the past six months from anywhere else in the first world. This is a largely American phenomenon. (not exclusively, but our rates of frequency outstrip any other 1st world country out there).

Did this kid get his guns from the black market?

Nope, legally bought:

The weapons were bought from two local stores of national chains, Gander Mountain Guns and Bass Pro Shop, beginning in May, law enforcement officials told NBC

Sorry, but we have to lock down firearms in this country. We are too crazy as a nation for them to be available to anyone not willing to buy them from cops.
He bought then legally because he could. If they were illegal, he would have bought them illegally or used he his skill at bomb making to bring about the carnage he was after
So let's just keep making it easy as pie to buy guns and watch this happen over and over and shrug our shoulders?Sorry but I don't see a geeky neuroscience major having connections in the black market. This guy was a psycho, not a career criminal. Same with Columbine. Same with Va Tech.

If you're a law-abiding citizen and want a gun, you should have no problem having your purchase heavily regulated and closely monitored by the police or other law enforcement agency.
This. While any kind of gun control probably wouldn't make a dent on criminal activity as a whole, I absolutely believe it would curtail these kinds of killings. It's at least worth looking into. All the guys that commit these kinds of crimes are antisocial losers that wouldn't be able to establish black market connections. Forcing them to use other kinds of weapons is at least pushing the goalposts back, because nothing's as easy as firing a gun.

And as I replied at the time, if Loughner had had only ten bullets to fire before he dropped the magazine, that would have been less people dead. However, one incident is not a good argument for anything.
You know what else would have reduced the number of casualties? A few people in the audience with legal, registered concealed weapons of their own.
Ridiculous. That would have greatly increased the casualties and injuries. Crowded, dark, tear gas filled theater, full of scared people.

It's people that think like this I worry about. Last thing you need is a few more people spraying bullets, whose only training is paper targets or bottles in the back yard. They'll hit innocent bystanders and the good samaritans will end up shooting at each other, not realizing there is only one shooter.

Now if those gun owners in the crowd are well trained like those cops and the military get fine. I'm not certain but I'd guess most gun owners do not have that type of training.
Common misconception that police officers have tons of training in firearms and live fire situations. SWAT team excepted, they usually don't.
I can't speak for all areas, but I know that police officers in Ventura County, L.A. County and Orange County of California have pretty regular training in both firearms and live fire type of situations. I'm not sure whether it's enough or not, though.
Not saying they receive none. It's just not as much as most people think. I've had multiple trainings, some with a large number of "novice" shooters where the instructor (former cops and trainers of cops) have commented how the group has better accuracy than most of the police officers they train/work with.
We were out shooting on a buddy's farm and they had small metal "spinning" targets. In our group were a Memphis PD officer and two guardsmen who are very active shooters. We took turns emptying clips from a Springfield XD40 (these guys sidearm of choice) at the target and at the distance we were at they would hit it 30pct of the time.... I'd hit about 20pct of the time. My girl walks up and hits at around a 50pct clip using a tiny keltec 9mm concealed carry I got her. Crazy. She hit 98pct on her concealed carry test. Then once the sun set we broke out the assault rifles fitted with milspec IR laser sighting and the military issue battle helmets with current gen night vision monacles mounted up and moved a case of green tips into the treelike (including some tracer rounds). I gotta say it's pretty fun to be able to unload a clip into what is complete darkness to the gallery, but you see the laser and target as clear as day, and can flat out turn a target to dust while aiming loosely from the hip. Helluva weapon.

A regulatory law against private ownership of assault weapons wouldn't have made ANY difference whatsoever?

not shiny phallus surrogates that wreak deadly havoc with the spray of their discharge. that'd why Al Qaeda has to package virgins to get guys to blow themselves up.

of course, i could be wrong....

Police Chief said that Holmes had a "drum magazine" with 100 rounds in it, and he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds in under 1 minute.

Well just checking back in from this morning and as predicted, the thread has gone off the track.

Crazy person did a crazy thing--no way to stop it if a mental health professionals didn't catch it at some time in their life.

I am in Colorado Springs (native of 43 years) and frankly this State has been through enough in the last 60 days. I went to the 12:10 pm showing of Batman today with my family. The theater was not full. I didn't even flinch at going, but there was one guy that came in alone and had a large duffle bag. I admit, I kept my eyes on him as he sat 3 rows in front of us. However, as we left, there was a guy standing in the doorway all dressed in military black garb fully armed guarding the entrance--I saw two guns at least.

I predict you will see metal detectors in some theaters soon or bag checks. None of which would have changed this event, but you can see theaters taking advanage of this to "weed out" people bringing in outside candy, drinks.

Just a sad, sad day here again in Colorado....

It appears that he is not cooperating with police. If we weren't such a ####ified nation it would be, Ok, mfer, meet the waterboard.

A lot of you are arguing against a straw man. There's really no point in discussing whether guns should be illegal, since that is an impossibility. What I want to know is whether certain proposed restrictions on gun ownership (please see my post #669) might reduce the probability of events like this morning. Can anyone answer this question?
I don't believe so. No.

Nancy Grace taking stupid journalism to new heights. She wants to know why no one noticed the gunman getting ready to go on his rampage. She's so stupid she can't figure out that the guy bought a ticket, went inside, left thru the door to his car, grabbed his guns and came back in.

If there is no doubt that the guy they have is the one that did this, he should be put to death tomorrow.

No, sorry. This thread never went off the rails. It's been good since the beginning.

T&P to the victims and their families. Just a horrible, horrible tragedy.

All of the pro and con arguments for gun laws mean nothing in this case - the shooter was going to get whatever firearms were necessary to commit this act, regardless of gun laws, and probably had it planned in his twisted mind for a while.

And shame on the Texas congressman for politicizing this.

So, how did this all stop? From that ABC interview the guy just sat down and that was that? How was he caught? I have not heard.

It appears that he is not cooperating with police. If we weren't such a ####ified nation it would be, Ok, mfer, meet the waterboard.
He has no reason to cooperate, and likely doesn't give a rat's ### about his own life as he's achieved what he set out to do. He's likely getting perverse pleasure from the attention and patting himself on the back for surviving it to see it.I'm as much if not more anti-death-penalty than anyone here.Fry his ###.

who would you like to see make the decision that the guy should be put to death tomorrow?
Me. I could make these calls with zero remorse.
Me too. Open and shut case here boys. Crime happens in the morning and that will be the last sunrise he sees. By midnight he will be buried.

Canada, but that is not why I am commenting here. While I feel it should be harder for people to own, carry, sell guns, this was a well thought out planned attack. He knew what he was doing. He was going to get his hands on these guns. He knew how to cause a confusion. You won't hear it on the news, but this was a Cimemark, which all the Cimemarks I have been in im LA has a no gun/carry policy. What does Columbine, VA Tech, Ohio School, this movie theater have in common? They all occured in no gun zones where law bidding citizens follow the rules. We just hear of an elderly man with a CCP stopping an armed robbery in Florida this week. It may have been a big media driven story if those two went into the internet cafe and shot as many people as they could.

Concealed carry is one of the dumbest laws in the United States. The 2nd Amendment has been blown way out of proportion from its intended purpose. That said, it's a damn shame that this occurred. Stupid people bringing guns to a theater, for what? Boobie traps In the guys apartment too. Can't wait to hear a motive on this one.I hate the term "gun control". Get rid of all of them and there won't be any firearm problems. One bad apple spoils a bunch but when that one bad apple has the ability to kill, the problem is with the tools allowed. Get rid of guns and America would be a much safer place.Like+1
I can see you up on the stage right now in your evening gown, hair done all nice and teeth sparkling as you answer the question with, "World Peace". The crowd applauses and you take your place in the back.

Unfortunately we will be paying the bill ($ millions) to keep this turd in prison for the next 60+ years.
This is what death row should be about. Stop making mistakes with people who are questionable. Here's a definite. Get it done!
The death row inmates cost the most.

I wish we had the science, technology, and medical know how to be able to find these fringe people before they go on their murder sprees. It seems that all the attention gets placed on guns. No one it seems is working on the why and how to prevent it from ever happening again. I think he should die! But, I wish that we could find out why he did it. Was there a way to stop this massacre from happening? So senseless, and maybe some people are just evil and want to pass some of their pain and suffering onto others. Would have been nice if he would have just committed suicide before the shootings and left this world a better place.

Only because they are not executed immediately.

Our legal system has a lot of problems, but it's still far superior to most.Of course in this case it would be nice to see him executed immediately, but overall our system, while not perfect, is better then pretty much any others.

Clifford keeps bring up other countiries figure out what it is they do. Does China have this much violence. If this happened, the media would cover the full day public torture, allowing victim's family members take a couple of swings with a bat publicly, humiliate him publicly, then behead him publicly. Then the president would come on and say, "To all of those planning some crazy #### for your 15 minutes of fame, I'll give you a full day."

We simply don't have a mechanism for deciding that one convict is 100% guilty while another is 90% guilty. I don't see how such a system would work. I'd have no issue torturing this specific freak, but it would lead to many innocents being tortured as well.

One innocent for the life of 12 innocent victims.

Sad and there seems to be no way to prevent this type of terror attack.
What type of weapon did he use?
Don't turn this into a gun debate, because it's pointless. Guy could've just as easily thrown in some pipe bombs, or rammed his car into the line of people waiting to get in.
While I agree this isn't the place, that is a discussion worth having.
Give me a break with the sanctimonious posturing going on here!!! Do any of you honestly believe that, within a few hours, this isn't going to be the place for a debate on gun control, violence in the media, kids unchecked abuse of violent video games from a young age, and political posturing on both sides of the isle? This is a sad, sad deal for everyone involved, but seriously....how is it any sadder than a lot of the crap that goes on and has gone on in human history. Hey, I bet you didn't know that there have been close to 300 homicides in Chicago alone this year, including a 3 yr old, a 7 year old, and scores of teens! Funny, but I am not seeing many condolences going out to those peeps. ( probably because most of them are black)

Believe me, they are already talking about the difference between auto and non auto guns on NBC. This is for sure going to turn into a debate. You should be glad you live in a country where you are still allowed to do that.
And that we have people like you to tell us how glad we should be. Of course a gun debate is going to follow. This is another useless mass murder employing guns. You have to be brain damaged to not see the logic in examining the gun culture of this country when things like this happen.
Tell you what, if there would have been a few people with concealed carry weapons in that theater, then he may not have gotten so many shots off. The law-abiding populace needs MORE guns, not less. The criminals and crazies will always have access to weapons. It is the law-abiding people who get hurt by gun control laws. Or do you think that criminals really pay attention to them?

I expect screenings will continue. Many will probably have moments of silence before the film starts.
I'm sure WB is probably talking about sending out reels to all the theaters that say "In memory of...." to be played before the movie.
That would be unwise. If I skip tonight, I'll probably go to this movie in a week or so. But I DON'T want to be thinking about Aurora when I go.
Save your money. The movie sucks.

Not sure I understood your post, but if the gov. were allowed to torture all convicted murderers, I'm sure the count of wrongly convicted tortured would eventually go over 12. While we can tell the difference between a guy like this that definitely did it, and someone who probably did it (some doubt but not necessarily reasonable doubt), I don't have the first idea how you put it into writing and enforce it. And creating two classes of guilty people is going down a strange road.
