At least 20 hurt after shooting during 'Dark Knight' screening in Aurora, Colorado

Updated at 4:49 a.m. ET: At least 20 people were hurt early Friday when at least one assailant opened fire during a shootout scene in a midnight screening near Denver of the summer blockbuster "The Dark Knight Rises," police and witnesses said.

The incident occurred in the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center, police told NBC News. Aurora is a suburb less than 10 miles east of downtown Denver.

Brenda Stuart, of 850 KOA radio, told Britain's Sky News that "a lot of people thought the gunshots were part of the movie."

"They heard what they thought were firecrackers," she added, citing witnesses. "Then they saw the bullets flying."

Eyewitness reports said the assailant may have been wearing a gas mask, Stuart said.

KUSA cited witness reports that at least 10 people were killed in the incident, but no confirmation was immediately available. Some eyewitness reports suggested up to 40 people were wounded, KOA reported, but details remained sketchy.

Tear gas went off in the theater following the gunfire, Stuart said. She added that bullets had passed from one theater into an adjoining one.

Police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said "the scene is still very active."

One suspect was in custody, police said. It was unclear whether other suspects were involved.

Local emergency crews from several cities, including Denver and Boulder, have converged on the scene, Stuart told Sky News.

Cathy Canzanora, a 911 dispatcher, told NBC News that emergency dispatchers were deluged with calls from "everybody who had cellphones in the theater" at 12:39 a.m. Friday local time (2:39 a.m. ET).

"The place blew up," she said, referring to the number of calls.

She said she could not reveal what people told her but said that they reported "that there had been a shooting so we got the police and the fire department and the ambulance there as soon as they could."

Canzanora said she did not have any information about the number of injured or dead.

Police use cars to transport the wounded Nicole Williams, with the Swedish Medical Center of Englewood, Colo., told KUSA-Denver the hospital was alerted to a mass-casualty incident at 1:15 a.m. local time Friday (3:15 a.m. ET).

The injured were being transported to three local hospitals, police told NBC.

Stuart said that police officers were taking victims to hospitals in their cars and not waiting for ambulances.

A bomb squad was on site, police added.

"The Dark Knight Rises," starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, is the latest in the popular Batman action movie franchise. Friday was its international premier.

After reading the update I just feel wrong with posting anything other than thoughts and prayers to all the families involved.

I'm kind of wondering if the shooter was in a costume. Will costumes have to be banned?

I'm just stunned. Those poor people.

MSNBC talking political ads. Boy oh boy, how does that place stay in business.

Not that these news nitwits have much to offer, most seem oblivious to the fact that the Dark Knight Rises is major American phenomenon. There used to be some good old horse sense to reporting.

This is horrible.

Just aweful for the peole directly involved but I wonder if there will be a ripple effect of less people going to see the movie this weekend now.

Unreal...

Not sure which news channel but some knuckle head reporter/expert or something says in a situation like this you should scatter and not group up. That's what they want you to do.

HEY DUMMY - they were in a movie theater with tear gas.... There are not a lot of places to go that was his whole plan.

Freaking news anchors are really awful.

Sorry for the hijack. I get just as pissed watching these dummies and listening to these people call in to say "I was on the news". One girl wasn't even in the same movie she was next door. WTF...

T&P to all the victims.... And no matter what way I write this it's going to sound like I'm blaming the parents WHICH I AM NOT but who brings a 1 or 2 year old to a movie, let alone a midnight movie... :loco:

T&P - I hope the selfish, look at me doosh gets some prison justice

just heard a report that he kicked in an emergency entrance to get in the theatre....
There is conflicting reports. Some say this. Some say he was in the theater and stood up and walked to the front. Some say there was a weapon hidden in the theater...

Costumes are pretty clearly the problem here.
Because one can conceal a lot under a Batman rig- like the bullet-proof vest, gas mask, gun, and other stuff he had.
And one can conceal that under a sports coat and briefcase, or a North Face jacket and backpack. Will those have to be banned as well?Sick people are going to do sick ####. You're not going to legislate them out of it.

Youngest victim is 6, injured not deceased. That said, who brings a 6 year old kid to a midnight showing of a movie like this?

Youngest victim is a 3 month old. Who the hell takes their 3 month old to a midnight movie?
People who are too selfish to logically wait until they can get a baby sitter and go at a reasonable time because they just have to be at the midnight showing. So sad. T&P to those parents and all who witnessed and are affected by this lunatic.

:goodposting: Crazy people determined to kill innocent people are always going to be able to find away. Really the best way to stop this #### is if you know someone who's acting off their rocker, report it to the police.

I hope that Nolan or Bale do something nice like a private screening or something for all the people in the theatre. Or do we think seeing the movie would now be too traumatic?

I don't think that's the way to go. More than likely, they'll donate some proceeds to a victims fund.

They say that no good news happens at 3AM. The world seems a little more unsafe right now.

This dude wants his 15 minutes. I hope that he never gets his picture taken for the press. This is all that he wants. I hope he dies on death row in anonymity. But that won't erase the damage. Tragedy. Lump in throat.

Thoughts and prayers to the people of Colorado. :(

as a parent that came to mind & who takes a 6 yo to a PG-13 movie. Terrible story
at midnight
They say the shooting happened at 1:00 AM MST.
He is saying not only was the 6 year old at PG-13 movie, it was also a midnight movie.

Taking a 3 month old to a movie theater in the first place is out of line. Totally disrespectful to the other filmgoers. And I say this as a father of a 3 month old. Wait for the DVD.

Not that taking a 6 yr old to a PG13 movie will win you the parent or guardian of the year, but lets not focus in on that as some kind of egregious sin. Lets imagine the shooting happened at a CVS pharmacy while the parent was picking up cough medicine for her kid. The point is, especially with police security around the perimeter of the theater, it wasn't like some dive bar in a red light district. Let's not go down that road of blaming the irresponsible parent.

When it comes out there were lots of warning signs that this dude was going to do something there will be plenty of people saying they should have known. My question is what should you do if you think a person you know is at a point like this and what can the police even do if you just have a suspicion?

Seems like this ####in piece of garbage was trying to be the villian from the move.

:goodposting: Might not the best idea to be taking young kids to a midnight movie, but that's hardly the issue here.
