SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (4 Viewers)

Was that the best looking host/musical guest combination ever?
Maybe.

So I took a look. I left out double duty hosts (e.g., Britney Spears, J Lo) to only include a distinct host/musical guest, and there were quite a few combos to consider.

Raquel Welch / Phoebe Snow 1975
Linda Hamilton / Mariah Carey 1991
Mary Stuart Masterson / En Vogue 1992
Heather Locklear / Janet Jackson 1994
Lisa Kudrow / Sheryl Crow 1996
Claire Danes / Mariah Carey 1997
Reese Witherspoon / Alicia Keys 2001
Sarah Michelle Gellar / Faith Hill 2002
Salma Hayek / Christina Aguilera 2003
Halle Berry / Britney Spears 2003
Blake Lively / Rihanna 2009
Anne Hathaway / Rihanna 2012
Brie Larson / Alicia Keys 2016
Scarlett Johansson / Lorde 2017
Natalie Portman / Dua Lipa 2018

I'm sure I missed some, but thought this was a pretty good list (chronological). I found it interesting that outside of Raquel Welch in 1975, these combos didn't really start showing up until the 90s, and seem to have accelerated since then.

I thought Gillis (I'm a fan of his) was an above average host with a below average monologue. The sketches, taken as a whole, were better than most weeks. I'd argue that no sketches reached that "instant classic" range. I thought the Limu Emu sketch was the funniest, but the "pop-culture" material it is based on, probably limits the shelf life of it.

I'm a big fan of Gillis as well. I currently live in his hometown in central PA. I liked his monologue as well... but as he mentioned during his monologue his material does not lend itself well to TV. I agree he was definitely better than most weeks. I thought the Trump sneakers skit was his best, and I agree that he is good at skits. I assume it is from his material with Gilly and Keeves.

Shortest Weekend Update ever
Overall a great episode tho. They must have been short on time or something. Very odd to have no guest bits on Weekend Update.

ScarJo was awesome. She nailed that monologue.

I wonder if Ariana Grande would ever want to pull double duty. She did well in her skits.

Beavis and Butthead :lmao:
I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. The fact they all couldn't keep it together was hysterical. Mikey Day killed it as Butthead, and Heidi's reaction when she turned around and saw him was :lmao: .
The subtle start with Gosling looking around as if it was someone else
...and the "I don't watch much TV, I have an incredibly busy life..." :lmao:

here’s the clip

I've watched a lot of SNL episodes from start to finish, and I can say without fear of contradiction, that the most recent episode with Dua Lipa was one of the all time worst.
Uninspired and unfunny. Hell, even Weekend Update whiffed an absurd number of times. And this after a hiatus.

It's not entirely fair to base things on a two minute trailer but the Jason Reitman film Saturday Night doesn't look great

Whether SNL is any good or not comes and goes in cycles. IMO the last time it was any good consistently was when Phil Hartman was on the show.

Cold open for the 50th season premiere last night had Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz, Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey as Joe Biden (first time back in almost 10 years).

Gaffigan and Carvey were :lmao:.

Gaffigan was hilarious as Walz. Maya wasn’t as funny but her impression of Harris was absolutely spot on. If I closed my eyes, I would think it was actually Kamala speaking.

I kind of think she is the hook that everyone else plays off of in that sort of skit.

Can we get a thread title change? Ariane Grande was fantastic as host. She's the Timberlake of the 2020s.
Grande seems to be willing to do whatever. Sadly, some hosts don't appear as game for whatever. Only missed opportunity - nothing referencing Pete Davidson?

I enjoyed the Nate Bargatze episode. Looking forward to seeing what Michael Keaton does next week.
Bargatze's two "Washington's Dream" skits are very, very high on my list. Easily in the top dozen. :giggle:

Thought the Grande episode was great but wasn’t a big fan of the Bargatze episode. His monologue was basically stand-up comedy and was really bad. I went back and watched his monologue from his last time hosting and that was pretty bad as well. How is this guy a big name comedian? Is it because he’s a clean comic?

Although it started off like it was going to be a downer, they really brought it this week.
Burr's opener wasn't great, but the firehouse sketch and the Buffalo Wild Wings had me crying I was laughing so hard.

I liked the Bargatze episode. The Mulaney episode was a train wreck though. I thought they went back to the well one too many times with the Duane Read and Guy who can't remember names game show skit.

Kind of gross to bring Alec Baldwin back and do a poor job imitating RFK.
Given the recent news surrounding RFK (which I won't go into out of respect for board rules), I think nothing is off limits at this point and "gross" is the new norm.
I think a person loses a lot of their comedic value after they shoot and kill a co-worker.
I don't disagree. That said, you're probably not their target audience. Their likely targeted audience are those panicking about the likely impact RFK will have on their lives comes 2025 and they need humor to cope with such panic.

So even though the involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dismissed with prejudice, you think he's somehow less comedic. To be clear, there were no winners in that unfortunate event. Halyna Hutchins died and he's got to live with that for the rest of his life. Frankly, I'm surprised he can pull it together and perform in public. I'm not sure I could.

Now if he'd been convicted, it would be a different story. We all know that anyone convicted of a felony charge is seen differently by the public, often scorned and shunned going forward (e.g., Bill Cosby). I'd probably look at him differently and not find him funny. I thought his RFK was weak, but not because of an involutary manslaughter charge. It was more the material and his sometimes on/sometimes off impersonation of RFK's voice.

Yes, I absolutely do find him less comedic. I don't see that man and feel joyous emotions. He committed all four cardinal sins of gun handling and even looking at it in the best light, his negligence killed someone.

I don't see the conviction as meaning all that much. Same way I can't watch OJ in the naked gun series. OJ ruins the movie because I don't see his character, I see OJ.

What makes this different is Naked gun was after the fact. This is SNL bringing him in as a guest because they want to look past it. Fine it's their right to do it, but I don't care for it.

You are correct though, his impersonation of RFK was poor and I think it was borderline inappropriate to imitate his neurological condition. I find this to be a terrible look for SNL.

Don't want to sidetrack the thread...too much.
But, I was listening to Baldwin's "Here's The Thing" podcast (Don Lemon was the guest) and he was whining about how rough his life has been because he was going through the incident in New Mexico. No mention of the woman who lost her life, etc.

He's never been known as a good person. But I still find him funny. Well, most of the time.

Full disclosure: I have no idea what the four cardinal sins are. Should he have known them? Is there some sort of mandatory training required for actors using what they believe to be prop guns firing blanks?

I'm not trying to defend the guy, I'm just curious.

I absolutely agree that negligence killed someone. But apparently it wasn't Baldwin's negligence. Maybe I'm misreading the verdict. Perhaps @Woz will drop in for clarification.

Lastly, one of my least favorite things ever, nepotism, may have also played a role. Please don't read this as blaming the victim. I'm not. There's a whole stew here of ****ups and wrong turns that resulted in the death of someone. This is anything but clear cut.

Yeah imagine eating healthy food. The horror!!
