Snowmageddon 2022 (1 Viewer)

1st round of shoveling in the books. About 6 inches, took about an hour. The snow was pretty fluffy so the going wasn't too bad. Not looking forward to what I'll wake up to tomorrow. If I have to shovel more than once tomorrow, I may break out the snow blower.
I hope you broke out the snow blower.

Yep, this sucks. Probably have 14 inches already (Nw NJ), spend an hour shoveling about half the driveway.

But,

I just fired up my grill and 5 lbs of turkey breast will be basking in smokey goodness in a moment.

Oh, and schnapps

Yep. Shoveled the foot or so of snow for an hour, then broke out the snow blower. Had to do another 1/2 hour of shoveling later because there were drifts right next to the cars. I've shoveled about 2 1/2 hours in the past 14 or so and my shoulders are killing me. I'll be going back out to snow blow around 3 with hopefully minimal shoveling.

Same here. Freaking old ladies across the street have essentially clean driveways and the side of my small driveway looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/TfjIb7N.jpgETA: I'm screwed if we get another foot because I don't have anywhere to put it.
That's the issue of nowhere to put an additional foot tomorrow morning. The paths are going to get a lot smaller.

We have probably 18" here in Baltimore. A co-worker is having her 30th birthday party tonight at a bar near my house. It usually takes about 7 mins to walk there. The snow should be 2' deep by then. I'm planning on going as it should be fun to walk a half mile.

Another co-worker is planning on cross country skiing there around the inner harbor. For him it would be about a 45 min walk or 10 min drive. Let's see how long it takes to ski.

I have to shovel very little since I live in a row home in the city and my cars are in my garage, although there's no place to put the extra snow from the sidewalk.

I've never lived anywhere that requires shoveling snow...why are you shoveling while it's still snowing? Can't you wait until it's finished?
The more the snow, the more the compression, the heavier the snow...

Snow is very heavy. Trying to shovel 2+ feet of snow is unbelievably difficult. Even a lot of snowblowers will struggle to move that amount of snow.

Better to get ahead of it and shovel 1' of snow twice than wait and try to shovel 2'+ of snow later.

And the longer it sits, the more compressed the snow on the bottom gets. That makes the bottom stuff heavier and more likely to turn to ice (which is REALLY hard to get up).

If you get out there early enough, you can basically use your shovel like a plow to shove the snow across the driveway. If you wait until it piles up, you have to pick up shovelfuls and walk each one over to the edge of the drive. It's backbreaking work.

Otis - NYC will get about 1-2 feet.

My call yesterday was 28 to 34 inches. And I had been saying 1 to 3 feet since about Wednesday. As of yesterday, Action News was still saying 6-12 and I was catching a lot of crap from people on Facebook for "hyping" the storm. Well, by 6 pm, Action News went to 12-18. Most places, including the NWS were calling for about 18 inches.

Models continue to show that the low will be captured and set up perfectly over us with the banding I was talking about. So here's the skinny:

We have about 13 inches at this point. And the storm hasn't even really begun for us. Most places (not Action News) have now upped their totals to 2 feet, including the NWS. I still think they are being conservative. I stand by my call of 28 to 34, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we saw it slightly higher. Seriously. 40 inches wouldn't be out of the question. Not saying that's a high probability, but it wouldn't shock me in the least.

See that. I do come on this site sometimes when it's not during work hours. Usually it's under a different alias, but for snow days, I'll make an exception.

Stay safe, everyone! I may hope back in here later if things change or get crazy fun.
Thanks Sheik.

And it looks like this is the 1% of the time the NAM is right.

Snapped a belt that seems to be a major part of the snow blower's functionality. Doing it the old fashioned way, with a shovel and old fashioneds.
:hifive:

I shoveled out a piece of the driveway and the front walkway. Backbreaking work. And of course it's already covered up again.

We're over a foot here and it's coming down harder than ever.
Over a foot? We don't measure the drifts out here on The Island. ;) It's an hour later and we're still under a foot average. But the way it's coming down I can see this 18-24" happening...

We have tix for an off-Broadway show down in SOHO tomorrow @ 3:00. Not sure what's going to happen to that at this point... :kicksrock:

Heat is out. Electric is on. Good thing I bought wood. Both fireplaces are roaring. Now it's time to find out wtf is up with the heat.

Early gut feeling is the flue is obstructed. Last night i was thinking that with the fireplace lit near the thermostat, maybe I should raise the heat so the rest of the house gets heat. I wonder if the blizzard like snow blocked the flue and since the heater was barely on - the snow built up since no heat was melting it? :shrug;

Gas line broke down the street? Unlikely.

Checking the furnace- 3 blinking lights indicates fifty filter or some obstruction. Filter isn't old but I'll change it. Need to find the reset. I'm not a HVAC guy but know a (very) little.

Coffee is made and it sounds like the youngest is up so its game on. I found a Tim Tebow Jets jersey. I have no idea how or why I own it as I'm a Cowboys fan. Musta been a gag gift but I'll put it on for its +2 LUCK bonus. Boots and gloves have been by the fire and I'm layered up.

I'm gonna fire up the snowblower for the second time ever, first was the test so I'm all :excited: I'll look to see if the flue is covered by a snow drift or something.
F me. Climbed the roof and everything looks good. Checked the exhaust and it looked good. Changed the filter.

Fires right up. Works for 5 minutes and shuts off. Now I'm back to square one. Off to the HVAC a thread.

A shovelful of snow weighs about 20 pounds. And that weight is at the end of a lever, so it typically feels a bit heavier than that. That's if you have a cubic foot of snow on your shovel. If you wait until it gets 2' deep, you either have to shovel a top layer off first, or you're shoveling 2 cubic feet of snow with each shovelful which is now 40lbs each scoop! That's an ER visit waiting to happen and why you shovel during the storm.

hmmmm you may have changed my mind about waiting it out, but I do have a blower

Ok, pics... really nothing crazy so far except the wind. As you can see, my wife's judgement of 8 inches might be a tad exaggerated, though a good Jewish 6 at least. A lotta blowing though, some places near bare and nothing on table tops, so hard to really gauge.

I learned you love cats ;) :)
What can I say. Lotta ##### around El Koya.
I liked the throwback Denver Nuggets shorts
Are the cats a food source? Lotta cat pics.
Entertainment source.

WTF else gives me photo worth crap when I've been holed up for months now? There are at least some NYE pics for ya and back a ways, sunsets and ####.

I lead an exciting existence.
The view down the block looks a lot like mine up here. North Shore, baby!

Well Diblasio is all over the TV now threatening to have them arrest anyone on the NYC roads after 2:30pm. I wonder if LI is similar.

I'm pretty deep into the alcohol anyway, probably shouldn't be out cruising. I'm gonna shut it down for the afternoon. My wife just made me the most amazing sandwich and some kind of fancy scotch cocktail, and I'm lit up and enjoying life.

It's a good life, fellas. This is one of this kick back and reflect moments. GB all my GBs here.

And Moobin, good luck getting the heat going. That sucks. I can't believe you got up on the roof in all this...

Not unless you want to blow a disc in your back. At these accumulation levels it's way better to shovel every 6-8". At the very least every foot.

We got 27" in Illinois a few years back and I did wait on that one to shovel. Took 3.5 hours to dig out a 1 car wide driveway about 75' long.

Jealous of the snow you guys are getting, rarely get it in the PNW unless you go up to the mountains. Day drinking during a blizzard is good times, go outside goof around come back in get warm. Love that.

Wish it were on a Monday for you.

When is this supposed to slow down? Not sure I want my son out playing in this.
Good question. Earlier they were saying the "eye" was going to hit NYC around 11-11:30am. Not sure if it continued to slow and that is past us. Now you have the back part of the storm whipping around from the water and continuing to pummel the area.

I brought my 5yo and 2yo out in it. The 2yo lasted 30 seconds and cried, we brought her back in. The 5yo had a blast, but I still decided to get her in after a bit. The wind was pretty wild.

I don't think we're clear until tomorrow -- nice weather then, will be perfect for building a snowman etc.

Has a major city ever shut down all travel because of snow? I dont recall ever hearing something like this.
yeah nyc has in the past
Not commonly, but it has.

But we haven't had a snow like this in a long time. I think we still have like 8 hours to go, and there's already 14-16" out there at my house.
yeah I was just telling my boy the last one like this was in 2009 when he want even a year old yet.

You mean the 2010 storm? I think that was 10"+ in NYC, I was living in Brooklyn at the time and we were trying to get a flight out of NYC for our honeymoon in December. But this already seems a bunch worse than that.

Check/clean the flame sensor (steel wool works well)

ETA: Or a dollar bill, I guess
