Snowmageddon 2022 (3 Viewers)

It is still snowing by me in NJ and it looks like there is a foot of snow on the ground. Even if the weather forecasters were off by a foot, it is still a lot of snow for me to deal with.
And again, not saying that a foot of snow is nothing to scoff at, but I don't think a foot counts as "historic" or "life threatening". My beef is more about the media overhype than the forecasters getting it wrong. That happens with snow storms. But the media was treating this like it was going to be a scene from Day After Tomorrow.

A foot of snow is no joke - but when they predict 3 feet, then 1 foot comes off looking like a light dusting. One thing I don't get with crisis coverage when bad things happen in NY, why do people still live there? Move out to flyover country with us normal people. Less drama.

Where are you? It's flurrying by me here in Flemington, but we've got nowhere near a foot. I think we got more from the snow over the weekend honestly.
Ocean County. I may been off on what I thought I saw earlier. It might be more like eight inches which is still something. I haven't been outside yet to actually measure it. I will do that in an hour or so.

Closing my office but this wasn't that bad at all.
 My office notified us of the closure yesterday. People are basically treating it as a day off. Hooray!
:hifive:

Same here, still have work to do from home, but sleeping in a little because the news sensationalized the SE PA impact of this is kind of nice. Makes up for days like the Week 14 2013 Eagles/Lions game that was supposed to be a "light dusting."

Not defending the media machine, but when the national weather service issues a warning with blizzard and historic for New York City, then it's game on for the blizzardmobile. They ran with the NWS warning. I understand it's really bad in the New England states where it actually is a blizzard, but the hysteria wouldn't have happened at all if NYC wasn't invovled in the first warnings along with the words they used. The fail all started with the National Weather Service.

How is this a fail? Again, it's weather, it's a fluid situation. If it were not NYC that was affected by a 25-50 miles change in path, then this would have been a pretty accurate forecast. But the line of delination became nassau / suffolk border (12-15 or less west, 15-25+ east).

It's not like the storm didnt materialize, but rather it missed the largest city by a fairly slim margin and places still got wrecked, including locales within the NY market.

:goodposting: It was a miss for NYC and Philly, South Jersey I suppose. But it's nowhere near a miss for places very nearby. Forecasts showed a sharp dropoff in snow amounts but that was south of where that actually occurred. Didn't miss the amounts, just the pinpoint location of the amounts.

Ok well it has continued to snow during the morning and i will say, shoveling the walk, driveway, and sidewalk was back breaking work. A good 15+ inches out there now, and still going. The drift parts where you have to shovel 2-3 feet are a real bear.

So yeah, while not armageddon, we ended up with a decent amount of snow on LI.

Looks like the next best chances will be around the 26-28th time frame. And around Feb 1-2 time frame. That one would be nice. I'd love a blizzard for my birthday.
Well, I'd say I pretty much nailed the first one. And the Super Bowl storm looks like it's still on the table, although, it might be another battleground of rain and snow.

And go East 15-30 miles and it goes to really bad and then apparently close to snowmaggedon. We probably are about where you are from the looks of it.

FWIW, successful Esquires such as yourself should be paying someone to do the heavy lifting. You can pay for illegal curbcuts, you can pay for a shoveller.

PS - My rates are $100 bucks for every 20 feet of driveway

I just dug my car out... I'd say we got about 6 inches in Brooklyn Heights. Still light snow coming down, but I'd be surprised if we get much more.

follow up questions:

- since there are more than a few FC/O's out there poo-pooing the hype... will more people take the next forecast storm less seriously the way people did with Sandy after Irene? (rehetorical)

- will we ever see this kind of shut-down again? what's it going to take for the next mayor/governor to decide to do this? Cuomo was pretty funny in his press conference today- talked about not issuing warnings or taking action when Buffalo got hammered because the forecast wasn't calling for it, and then doing the opposite for this one. lose/lose. but then mentioned putting more money and energy into forecasting.

by "dig", you mean kicked some of the snow out from around your tires, right?

juts got back from the playground across the street. we've seen many storms give us a lot more snow (and this is dry stuff, so not as sticky). but it is definitely windy and cold out there.

East end of LI got pretty hard out here. I would say 18-24 inches. Waiting on my snow plow guy so I can dig out my cars.

Took a break from here for the weekend. Did I miss anything?
WTF? You took a break during the biggest storm of the year?

"Some" of us were worried sick about you!
I was home from work and I was spending most of my day watching models and "crunching data." There was a very high bust potential to this storm for many areas, so it was actually a fun storm to watch. Things that needed to happen, ended up happening, but other things fell apart. Up until very late last night, it was still uncertain as to whether this storm would bust for the west or blossom like it was supposed to.

I was talking with a bunch of different mets all day yesterday, and each one was worried about the call. Regardless of what people think, predicting the future is extremely difficult. And no matter what their call was, they were going to catch hell.

Bingo... I'm on the right side of the street though, so there was a decent amount of snow to kick.

well- first off, how are you?

you missed the coronation of a lot of new self-appointed weather experts. they'll be here to offer advixe though, so you can finally relax looking at "models" and whatnot.

My forecast last night was much more accurate than the experts on TV.

Passionate hobby. When I was in high school, I had planned on going to PSU for meteorology. Then I learned you had to be good at math. So I picked something else.

Don't be modest.

He's a local weather guy.

That's BS.

There was no mention that this was a tough call or there could be a 75% reduction in the forecasted amounts.

The talking heads used terms like "historic," "snow-bomb" and "life-threatening" for NYC proper.

You mean you can afford $90 hoodies and can't find the scratch for a snow blower? What the hell?

I think weather prediction, at its core, is an amazing thing. To be able to predict that a storm will form, move across the globe and affect a certain area days in advance is something that is mind bottling to me. Sure, it's easy to say, "They called for 12 inches and we only got 5", and feel like that's a failure. And by our standards today, it really is. But to think that they could predict that storm, from days out, and then be able to determine how much liquid would fall out of the sky is crazy! There are so many factors that go into every single detail of the forecast and they are all changing every single second.

I always have friends who say things like, "Well, they called for a blizzard and we only got 6 inches. Are these guys ever right?" But the thing is, they never called for US to get the blizzard. Sometimes they don't understand the terms, and this becomes the forecasters fault, as well. At the same time, 20 miles north, they may have got the totals correct. People seem to want an accurate forecast that is precise to their backyard. And that's just not possible.

I just think it's odd that people complain about guys who predict the future because they are only right 75% of the time.

It was on pace to be historic. It did bomb out, just ask the people in New England. And it is life threatening. The track just shifted west. This is something we see a lot with storms like this. Same thing with hurricanes.

I have one real complaint:

There was absolutely a point last night when every meteorologist figured out this gigantic storm was going to miss NYC. I watched the news until almost 1am, and not a single one of them backed off of their "historic blizzard" forecast. Zero integrity, and at that point strictly telling lies for ratings. This is equivalent to journalists / news stations telling blatant lies or exaggerations to promote their agendas, and every single one of them did this last night.

Been thinking of getting a weather station , you know the type the people at WU use, what is a good way to start?

That's why I specified NYC proper. The guys in Boston are getting hammered and maybe didn't get enough attention because all eyes were on NYC.

The storm wasn't on pace to be historic, there was a chance for it to be historic. The chances for it to be a 6" event were never given.

There was a chance that NYC could see a foot or more of snow probably up until about 3 am.
