FWIW...there are de-icers out there that will burn paws. Happened to our dog. I don't remember the name, but i got it at HD. I felt bad. Not all of it is dangerous though...just have to read the bag.I'm not saying it, my wife is. She's the one who insisted I get special de-icer for our front steps because that's how the dog goes outside. And he's a Labrador, not some frou-frou dog.I've never heard of this. Our dog goes out where I've salted all of the time. Are you saying it's burning her paws?Yep, bought 2 50# bags at Costco when it first came in stock last September. Magnesium Chloride.We bought 2 bags back in October because last year we ran out and no one had any. Wasn't messing around this year.I wish.
Can't even buy regular salt at most places anymore for ice melting. It's all Potassium Chloride or Magnesium Chloride mixed with salt (and costing 3x as much).
Of course then we had to get smaller bottles of the special "pet safe" forumula from Petco so the dogs little pads wouldn't bet burned by the harsh salt...
Vets do say that salt will dry out the pads on the bottom of dogs feet and will cause them to crack and possibly be painful to walk on. Also the big crystals can hurt a dog's feet.

That sounds about right. Depends what part of "southern MD" you are talking about, though. If you are east of the Chesapeake, you could see higher amounts. Maybe near 5 or 7.

Hey, I'm glad. If we got the 6-10 or 10-12 I saw, the kids would have been home today and tomorrow. I don't mind snow, but we've already had 3 snow days when we only needed 1 and of course 5 2 hour delays. My wife and I both work from home so snow days suck for work.<_<

Days like this are the worst for me. I work from home too. We had a dusting here in Rock Hill, school is closed and the kids have nothing to do outside, so I feel you on the snow days sucking for work.Hey, I'm glad. If we got the 6-10 or 10-12 I saw, the kids would have been home today and tomorrow. I don't mind snow, but we've already had 3 snow days when we only needed 1 and of course 5 2 hour delays. My wife and I both work from home so snow days suck for work.<_<

That does suck, normally our county is way too cautious. Last week after the ice (which was a good reason to close school), they closed on Wednesday even though every spot that can normally re-ice was bone dry the night before when I went out. A delay would have been fine. Even this week with the less than an inch, we were closed and the roads were fine. I was shocked that they didn't pre-close like most of the area, but they finally got it right. Closing for a day of rain would have been crazy.Days like this are the worst for me. Are you in Charlotte, NC? That's surprising that you only got a dusting. I can't say I'm surprised the way this winter is going, but a dusting is quite a bust. Even if the storm shifted north, I would have thought you'd still get a good amount. That's crazy.Days like this are the worst for me. I work from home too. A few miles south, but generally speaking, yes? Areas up there got a couple inches....not much more than that. I grew up in Asheville, so I am use to the weather guy being completely wrong, but the kids were devastated as was my wifeAre you in Charlotte, NC? That's surprising that you only got a dusting. Last week, they were off for President's day. Tuesday, we had about a half inch of ice so they were out. Then the cold weather hit and had two hour delays the rest of the week. They cancelled school for today yesterday at about 4:30pm and they could have gone to school today, no problem.That does suck, normally our county is way too cautious. Last week after the ice (which was a good reason to close school), they closed on Wednesday even though every spot that can normally re-ice was bone dry the night before when I went out. Sheik: Can you provide any insight into this Sunday night? Specifically I'm supposed to be driving from Buffalo to Pittsburgh and back between like 2 PM Sunday afternoon and 2 AM Monday morning. Looks like both cities are showing ~3-5 inches of snow and virtually a 100% chance of snow between roughly 6 PM and 5 AM. Any thoughts? Should I bail?

Still a ways out, but at this point, I wouldn't bail on anything. Models have been all over the place for 3+ days out. One run has a huge storm for a certain day, then the next run it's got nothing. As of right now, it looks like Sunday should be OK.

I shouldn't say that. That's not completely true. What I meant was that I wouldn't believe the 3 to 5 inches as of right now. Will there be snow Sunday night? Possibly. Overnight runs should hopefully clear some things up. My main point was that I wouldn't cancel anything yet or take any forecast you hear now as set in stone.

I can tell I'm no longer impressed with models this season because I've had almost zero desire to even look at them for this upcoming "storm" Sunday into Monday. 3 of the 4 models have us at 2 to 4 inches, but the rain/snow line is going to be crucial. I can't remember the last time I thought this in February, but I'm ready for the snow to end and the warmth to start.

What makes you say this? I'd heard people last night saying 6-9 inches in Buffalo area but it looks like the websites are still saying 3-5, and now Pittsburgh has been downgraded to 1-3 inches or possibly rain rather than snow (temps in the mid-30s in the evening). I'm sure I'm not looking at the same things you are though.

I guess I'm speaking for myself. And that's probably not helpful to you. For me, I don't drive in snow, so when I said driving might not be a good idea, it was based off of the fact that models were showing snow for your entire drive. But if you are used to driving in snow, this may not be a storm that will keep you from driving.
Between Buffalo and Pittsburgh, there's a chance for 6+ inches of snow.

Here's the WPC showing where 8+ inches of snow is possible. Now, I have to admit, I only have a general idea of where those two cities are, and I don't know the exact route, but I'd assume that the route goes right through there.

Maybe I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but this is only showing 8+ inches out west, no?
FWIW, Buffalo is at the western edge of NY state, basically between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario on the Canada border. The drive would be along the southern shore of Lake Erie just into PA, and then roughly a straight shot down the PA/OH border (staying in PA) to Pittsburgh near the ~SW corner of PA.

One year we had a storm that started earlier than predicted right before rush hour. It turned a 0.5-1.5 hour commute to 6-8. A lot of people ran out of gas and had to abandon their car to walk to hotel/ motel near the highway. No complains about traffic bans and more work from homes after this incident.

Woke up to another 8-12 inches in my driveway this morning (Connecticut). Just a relentless beating put on by Mofo Nature this winter. There's a good 4 feet of snow on my deck and it is exposed to the sun all day long.

I would seriously watch that over MNF if they had a show like that. Anyway, a couple of fun days here for my area. If we lived in Biblical times, this would be a week where people felt like they really did something wrong to piss God off. Luckily we live in the 21st Century, so only about 1/3 of people think that now. Yay, progress!
So here's how it's going to work the next couple of days. Keep in mind, while the forecast may be easier this time, timing is going to be the bee-otch. Starting today, the NWS has all of us under a Winter Weather Advisory. We may see snow from this (possibly up to 2 inches) but the main threat will be the ice. Snow will move in early this afternoon, last only a short time before changing to sleet, then finishing as freezing rain later tonight. My guess is that PM rush hour tonight will be bad. I plan to leave early, and I wouldn't even be surprised to see schools let out early if the radar warrants it.
Here's where it gets REALLY fun! Tomorrow morning, I'm still not sure what conditions will be like. That's because at some point, the warm front will come through and heavy rain will start to fall. I think this will be around the AM rush hour, but honestly, that's just an educated guess on my part. So heavy rain doesn't sound bad, right? Compared to snow and ice anyway. Well, remember how we had one of the coldest Februarys on record? Yeah, so that really made the ground like cement. So any rain that falls, it's going to have a tough time finding someplace to go.
Which is bad, because then the cold front comes through. And any rain that couldn't find a place to go, will freeze up. Oh yeah, on top of that snow, we're looking at about 6 to 8 inches of snow for most places. That should hit right at Thursday AM rush hour, so we got that going for us. Which is nice.
In summary, ice/snow tonight, flooding rain tomorrow, flash freeze tomorrow night, biggest snow of the winter Thursday morning. In like a lion, indeed.
