Snowmageddon 2022 (1 Viewer)

Has a major city ever shut down all travel because of snow? I dont recall ever hearing something like this.
yeah nyc has in the past
Not commonly, but it has.

But we haven't had a snow like this in a long time. I think we still have like 8 hours to go, and there's already 14-16" out there at my house.
yeah I was just telling my boy the last one like this was in 2009 when he want even a year old yet.
You mean the 2010 storm? I think that was 10"+ in NYC, I was living in Brooklyn at the time and we were trying to get a flight out of NYC for our honeymoon in December. But this already seems a bunch worse than that.
it was right after Christmas and well over twenty inches
Yeah, same one I think. That was 2010. Will be interesting to see if this tops that -- it feels like it will, but who knows.

It's about petered out here. Be safe, folks still in the bullseye.

Snow volume and wind here really have picked up. I have no interest in going out there now. Wife and I just tried to go have a cigarette over a covered portico, and that lasted about a minute. I ain't going out there now unless I can climb into a tauntaun.

30 or so hours of staying on top of the shoveling so the minivan is ready to roll shortly after the plow comes. And I'm a considerate neighbor. I live in a town house and walk every shovelful of snow across the street to the grass, so as not to potentially interfere with any parking spaces. I take it to a pile I started about 30 or so feet away. Many here just fling into any empty parking space.

I finally get everything cleared with the snow winding down and ready to start throwing down salt to prevent ice on the asphalt. ####### minivan battery is dead. At least I hope it's the ####### battery. Got it on a charger now, but doing the entire routine all over again to clear the car out in case it's something more (or the battery is dead dead).

And it's only when I finally get out of here that the real shoveling begins...

Only way out normally for our dogs into the fenced in area is out the sunroom and down a flight of stairs. Usually I would go out and shovel the deck and stairs before letting them out (had one dog slip and tear an ACL). Wife attempted to shovel earlier (first time that's ever happened) and realized that all that sleet last night basically turned it into like 5" of ice covered snow. Fortunately I installed a temp fence around the other side of the house Thursday. No steps, and have a handicap ramp into a small fenced in grass area. Hopefully enough sun tomorrow to melt the icy part so I can clear the deck. And I'm sure as hell not shoveling the 100 yard driveway today. Or maybe at all.

Didn't we get 2-3 monsters that winter?

Went out to do the first wave of shoveling. Waited waaaay too late. Only got about 2/3 done before I succumbed to the wind and snow. Looks like about 15 inches now with drifts up to 4 feet! And it's coming down hard now.

I want to give a huge shoutout/thank you to whoever said to get WD40. I bought some after you suggested it. But when I went out to start shoveling, I forgot to use it. Two scoops later, the entire shovel was covered in snow. Hit it with the WD40 and after that, it was all sliding off with no sticking. Whoever that was, thank you immensely. That saved me so much time and effort.
My wife just said Pam cooking spray does the same with less hurt to the environment.
#### the environment. The environment picked this fight. I'm just finishing it.

Break in the action went out and did the driveway. Measured 21" on the yardstick, up to my kneecap. With another round coming. It's bourbon time.

We are at 29 inches here. I went out to shovel at 630 and just got back inside. Figure I will go out again around 2. Sheik, any word on how much more this thing is going to dump? Eastern Panhandle of WV.
Where are you? I used to live in Martinsburg and Ranson.
Hedgesville
My GB from down there teaches at Hedgesville High School.
I graduated from there and my Brother in law taught there for a few years and left last year. Mind PMing a last name for your GB. I probably know him.

I shoveled the sidewalk up to the end of my block. The dckfaces next door (4 guys, all under 30) next lift a finger. I've had them walk past me without saying a word, not even "thanks" as in shoveling the sidewalk in front of their house. They just cruise to the middle of the street and continue on.

Heat is out. Electric is on. Good thing I bought wood. Both fireplaces are roaring. Now it's time to find out wtf is up with the heat.

Early gut feeling is the flue is obstructed. Last night i was thinking that with the fireplace lit near the thermostat, maybe I should raise the heat so the rest of the house gets heat. I wonder if the blizzard like snow blocked the flue and since the heater was barely on - the snow built up since no heat was melting it? :shrug;

Gas line broke down the street? Unlikely.

Checking the furnace- 3 blinking lights indicates fifty filter or some obstruction. Filter isn't old but I'll change it. Need to find the reset. I'm not a HVAC guy but know a (very) little.

Coffee is made and it sounds like the youngest is up so its game on. I found a Tim Tebow Jets jersey. I have no idea how or why I own it as I'm a Cowboys fan. Musta been a gag gift but I'll put it on for its +2 LUCK bonus. Boots and gloves have been by the fire and I'm layered up.

I'm gonna fire up the snowblower for the second time ever, first was the test so I'm all :excited: I'll look to see if the flue is covered by a snow drift or something.
F me.Climbed the roof and everything looks good. Checked the exhaust and it looked good. Changed the filter.

Fires right up. Works for 5 minutes and shuts off. Now I'm back to square one. Off to the HVAC a thread.
Check/clean the flame sensor (steel wool works well)

ETA: Or a dollar bill, I guess
Thank you very much!

I haven't done that yet but Ive got her up and running again. Seems to run for 5 to 10 to 15 minutes before shutting off. Right now I have the two fireplaces roaring and the heat is working going 20 minutes + so since Ive brought the whole house temp up to 71 (from 55 earlier) Im going to try an monitor and muscle through it this way before dismantling anything and run the risk of no heat at all.

for now...

#### them guys and their sidewalk.

I'm renouncing my status as a responsible homeowner.
 There's only so much you can clear. I usually help out an older neighbor but sorry dude, every man for himself on this one. A guy down the street did most of the sidewalks with his blower up to my house, props to him.
This is the first big snowfall in a new house. There's an elderly couple across the street. I had every intention of helping them out tomorrow, after getting my own place squared away today. I just looked out the window and a bunch of neighborhood kids are digging out around the elderly couple.

At first I felt a sense of relief. Then I felt bad for feeling relieved. That lasted about ten seconds before I went back to feeling relieved.

You should take a dump in the middle of their sidewalk after you shovel it.

In case any of you were wondering, a husqvarna snow blower will easily suck up landscape lighting, throw it 30 feet and then keep on throwing snow as if nothing happened.

Had an extended dry slot this morning, but we're getting some real end of the world #### right now. By the way, trying not to giggle when you say "dry slot" is an underrated pleasure of these storms.

WJLA reporter literally standing in the middle of the Loudoun County (VA) Parkway. Several cars stuck on the parkway. Backhoe drives through the shot and you can see the backhoe's wheels spinning. Wow.

CNN saying NYC looking at 30" totals. Sick.
VA already has 30 inches in places like Winchester and along Route 7 towards Leesburg.
I'm in a suburb of DC, and we had 28' as of 1. Been 2+ inches an hour since, and won't taper off until sometime tonight. My electric blower and beer powered self will have plowed around 3 1/2 feet or so before it's all done. Thankfully, the electricity has stayed on and my beer supply is plentiful. If this band gets heavier, however, I may need to switch to vodka power.

They may be lazy, but why shovel now?

It's pretty much stopped over here in the Valley. I have no clue what the official total will be recorded as, but I'm gonna guess 24-30" for Shenandoah County.

"No ####" said my back after shoveling
I had to give up on keeping up. The walk drifted shut on my second pass while I was shoveling the driveway. Said #### it and came inside and cracked a beer. You win, Mother Nature, you win. Also of note the snow drifted my front door completely shut. Pretty cool.

Best estimate is about 18" so far. I've seen some drifts well over 2'.

Sustained 20-25 mph winds with gusts over 35. Limbs falling down, lots without power. Supposed to keep snowing for several more days. It's almost pitch black here, the knocking in the attic has started again. Roving bands of dogs took our neighbor, and the oldest succumbed to dysentery. We've begun drawing lots to determine who gets the last of the unlabeled cans. There's nothing but solid ice and crevasses as far as we can see. Several explosions were heard overnight and there is a hint of a blue glow to the southwest. All hope is lost. This will likely be my final dispatch.
