UPDATE: Today was a LOT more drinky than I expected. I guess taking a flask out to shovel with me at 9am will do that, huh?

Oats, do you have a snow blower? How long is your driveway?

And some wife action, kid playing, pot, wine, and good food sounds fantastic. Lucky sob...
I'll put 10:1 that about 5-7 miles due east there's better weed than at Oatsville.

Not that he's accepted my invitation to toke up. :kicksrock:
I am not on the north shore anymore GB. That's like wayyyyy far.
Wait... what? When did you move, and my god, the south shore? might as well live on staten island or joisey?

Wow. Governor Hogan has completely shut down all of I-270, and also I-70 from the I-81 interchange to the Baltimore Beltway. I don't think I've ever seen that. I remember Governor Erlich riding around in a jeep several years ago wanting to arrest anyone on the roads during a storm, but not an official edict like this.

Incredibly peaceful out there now. Crystal clear sky, brightest moon and stars I've ever seen.

Any and all shoveling I did yesterday is lost, both because we ended up getting a bunch more snow, and because the plows really blocked us in at the end of the driveway with huge snowbanks. I'll be starting from scratch if we plan to go anywhere today, and it will probably take hours. Eesh.

Yeah, I'm not even attempting to attack the damned iceberg at the end of my driveway that the plows made. I'll either flag down someone with a plow or wait until tomorrow and have someone at my shop bring the loader over to dig me out (I live about 1/2 mile from my office).

Not gonna be much melting today. It's 6 degrees and is only supposed to get in the high 20s later on.

Brooklyn is completely shut down. Any guesses as to when I'll be able to catch the F to work near Central Park? I'm thinking Wednesday at the earliest...

Sunny and 27 here. Might make it above freezing. I'm going to give the shovel a go on the deck, a small patch of the temp fenced area, and the end of the driveway. End of the driveway slopes down and when icy can be hard to get up and out of the road. Think our neighbors are gone. I should go borrow his backhoe. :D

The snow plows all push to the right side of the street, naturally the smarter people will try to find a spot on the left side. I got one last night, as I was getting out of my car, the guy in front of me left, I decided to take up both spots. Normally a very **** move, but to avoid damage to my car from someone parked close by trying to get out over a snow mountain, and the ease of getting out with more space, I think I get a pass on this move.
No regrets at all with this move... Look at these cars, multiple vehicles here, you can't even see them. This guy was digging out a car for 45 minutes while I played with my son and made little headway:http://i.imgur.com/xciMfjh.jpgI'll have little difficulty getting out:http://i.imgur.com/W6mX2rA.jpg
pretty much a #### move, as you know. but hey- whatever- your life is easier so #### everybody else.
My wife is 9 months pregnant, I don't give a ####
Pretty douchey, but still not as douchey as posting your steakhouse receipts.
Yup, I should prob make some trust fund hipster's life easier so he can park his Subaru hatchback on my ### and make my life 8x more difficult should my wife go (or went) into labor. Huge ##### move on my part.
yeah, i guess you New Yorkers are different. I have seen this happen once or twice before, one the guy came out to flat tires in the spot, the other was keyed to ####. i'd probably throw a rock through the windshield myself
A little help for a hick in Georgia - what is he doing wrong?

My back will never be the same. Hours of heavy shoveling on my own. Got he driveway done and cars out. Haven't even broached the sidewalk or front walkway. I'll hope some guys come by for that.

How do you not have either an overpriced snowblower or an overpriced contract with a plow guy?

Asked my wife this offseason to sign up our landscaping guys to also do snow removal. They were overbooked.

Snowblower just feels like something that will take up too much room in my garage for the one time I use it each year. But it sure would have been nice today.

Seriously. After 2010 I said no way I'm dealing with shoveling bull#### again. Bought a nice snowblower that I've only used 4-5 times since but it's so worth it to just have that peace of mind when something like this comes along.

Backyard shed?

Finally finished moving all I was gonna do.Ended up right around 22" and had some drifts over my waist.

This is when you learn who the good neighbors are.One guy had a plow and did about 5 driveways for free just because he was bored(older, retired guy).

I help my next door neighbor with her driveway and the one directly across from me stopped by and offered help as well.

Overall the forecasters really nailed this one and most were prepared and actually stayed home.

I shoveled for 3 hours, scratched my car by accident with my shovel, have horrible back spasms, and we still haven't been plowed yet because it's too high. Guy wants to charge us $300 an hour and we have no choice. Did I mention how much I hate snow?

forecasters said 6 to 12 inches. They were only off by a foot but yeah totally nailed it.

Nailed it in my area

24 inches here in rural Berks County PA, did the drive way 3 times yesterday during the storm to keep it a minimum today. About an hour and a half with the snow blower this morning and the drive way and about 100 feet down the road done so they didn't plow me back in. Melting nicely now. Still need to do the mailbox but screw the mail if I don't get to it.

apparently three deaths in the NYC area from shoveling.

stay safe, fatguys.

again- was fun walking down the middle of Houston St last night, and fortunately the subways worked just fine for us underground. GL to you guys in the outer boroughs with above ground trains... hopefully the sun and warmer weather will help clear things up for the work week.

I can't believe that the children in your neighborhood don't go around and broker contracts for snow shoveling between you and and some illegal children that they then bus in to do the job. Kids just don't have a sense of work ethic these days.

Car is finally shoveled out, only took an hour. Wife has her final OBGYN visit tomm morning, so my gift to some random ####### is a big wonderful spot. I might just slash their tires out of anger.

I hate snow!

Need the LIRR to get off of their humps and get the trains back up and running.

Can't believe they managed to get trains stuck during the storm.

Metro North and NJIT were smart enough to pull the plug.

Went out to do the first wave of shoveling. Waited waaaay too late. Only got about 2/3 done before I succumbed to the wind and snow. Looks like about 15 inches now with drifts up to 4 feet! And it's coming down hard now.

I want to give a huge shoutout/thank you to whoever said to get WD40. I bought some after you suggested it. But when I went out to start shoveling, I forgot to use it. Two scoops later, the entire shovel was covered in snow. Hit it with the WD40 and after that, it was all sliding off with no sticking. Whoever that was, thank you immensely. That saved me so much time and effort.
My wife just said Pam cooking spray does the same with less hurt to the environment.
:) Generic label is what I have used for years

Cleaned off 3 cars (none of them are what I drive), cleared the deck and the stairs down the deck, the stairs down from the front to the side of the house, the 4 car pad, and cleared down to 1/2" of ice down 100 yards of the driveway. Hopefully the sun takes care of the last 1/2" cuz I'm not doing anything else. Think that was about 4 hours worth.Time to pass out on the recliner.
