STAR WARS: Episode 7 (All-Time #1 opening box office.) (3 Viewers)

Yeah, Episode III was solid.
The gap between EP3 and EP6 is microscopic and one could make a good arguement that 3 was better than the Teddy Bear war.
Please don't kid yourself. Three was awful too. Don't forget the stupidest turn in movie history. Being "dark" doesn't make a film good.
Ewoks beat Stormtroopers dude. Ewoks beat Stormtroopers.
Amen! And don't forget, the weapons of choice for the Ewoks were rocks and sticks. How those incompetent storm troopers couldn't hold off the teddy bears with their blasters is one of the great mysteries of the universe. How is anyone supposed to take the dark side seriously after that bumbling idiocy?
Worked for the Simpsons

Wookies are massive, use lasers and spaceships. Despite the limitations in practical special effects in 1979 when Wookies were first introduced they still came across as plausible bad ###es.

Ewoks OTOH come off as better suited to sell me fabric softener.
Ewoks are like midget Wookies. Seems like you may have a problem with midgets.
The preferred nomenclature is Little Furry People, Sheik.

I was going to write that, but then I thought "They're not people." But little Wookies didn't sound right either. I went with midgets because I don't think Ewoks have an issue with non PC terms.

I am not sure Ewoks understand english anyway, so go ahead and call them what you want. wookies on the other hand seem to understand English just fine. So be careful.

If a 7'5" Wookie hit a stormtrooper in the head with a club (or a rock) does anyone doubt the stormtrooper would die? If 1,000 Wookies came charging out of the forest screaming their heads off I am pretty sure most stormtroopers would die from ####ing their pants out of fear.

The principle problem with Ewoks is that they formed the backbone of the land forces that defeated the Empire, which is an entirely laughable premise. Without the forgiving sepia toned lens of nostalgia they are every bit as ridiculous as Jar Jar Binks and the Gungans.
And yet Wookies were enslaved and Ewoks weren't.

People keep saying they defeated the Empire. Is this a given? They won a battle, a major battle, but I can only imagine that the Empire had probably 95% of it's military elsewhere across the galaxy.

Wookies were worth enslaving.

Racist.

It's a fair point, which is why I called the Ewoks the main ground troops in the offensive. The majority of the Empire's fleet however, including the Super Star Destroyer, appeared to be deployed around the Death Star and they were also defeated.

I saw E1 in a theatre and people cheered, there was a standing ovation!

In that moment the love of star wars surrounded us like the force! later being critical became popular.

I hope people let their guards down and let the love surround them and just embrace this new movie.
They cheered because they love Star Wars. I think one reason people became more critical over time is that you just can't re-watch those movies. I get no enjoyment out of re-watching I and II. Too many plotlines that I find extremely boring, too much un-needed complexity, and not enough "Star Wars". The Originals had a bad guy and a good guy. The prequels didn't really have a bad guy, as the Emperor was in the background the whole time, Anakin was still good until the very end of III, and Darth maul, as good as he was, died in Episode I and was heavily under-used.

Had they cut out all the political drama, had Darth Maul in all 3 prequels (only to be killed by Anakin in E3), and cut out some of the cheesy drama, the prequels would have been much better.
I liked the political drama. It set up the movies as to how the Empire came about.
Agreed. Thought that was the best part of the first two prequels.
I'm surprised to hear that. But I guess that shows that movies are subjective and there is no right/wrong when it comes to opinions. I personally want to punch myself in the face when I start watching EP1, hearing about the trade federation/blockades, etc. I saw a youtube video once that showed how awful that movie was from a logic standpoint and I haven't been the same since.

same here

6 movies of evil bgs lose to sweet ggs in the same fashion would have been boring to me

The political parts would have been fine if the action parts didn't fall way short. A brief Jedi escape, a pod race, a gungan land battle and a half passed repeat of the death star attack kind of let us down. Maul vs QuiGon and Maul vs Obiwan are the main redeeming battle of the movie.

yet there were 10-20 times as many empire foot troops attacking a rebel shield generator in Empire as there were defending the Empire's shield generator in Jedi

and one of the walkers from Empire could have wiped out the Ewoks, but instead they sent chicken walkers which quite frankly sucked

Maybe calling it the "best part" wasn't the best choice, Maul was the best part. But the story of the formation of the Empire was at least somewhat well considered and executed by Lucas. I like that he put time into setting the stage for the state of the universe in ep. 4. It may not have been exciting but it wasn't nearly as insulting intellectually as so much of the rest of the first two prequels.

This is arguably the best fight in the 6 movies. Ewan McGregor's best acting work was when he was stuck inside the tube and could not get into the fight.

Maul dieing too early in the trilogy was a terrible decision. Having him escape gives Obi something more to do in #2 besides chastise Anikan at every turn.

Agreed.

It would have been a little better if Maul had been replaced by something better than a fay aging pirate named after a slang word for a bowel movement.

My bad, GB. I wasn't trying to call out what you said, which is why I didn't quote anyone. I keep seeing people say that and I wasn't sure if this was actually stated in books or something. I honestly don't know. I had always imagined it was the turning point of the war, but I also pictured that the fight still probably went on for a very long time after that. That's just my interpretation, though.

The end of episode II, where it pans out from Palpatine to the Storm Troopers and plays the Imperial March music for the first time in the prequels was really, really cool.

My only real complaint with I - III was the love story between Anakin and the Queen. It was just drawn out too long. That scene where they're laying in the field is probably the only part of any of the movies where I'm like, "This is stupid."

I actually disliked that more than Jar Jar I think.

It was so forced. I know they needed to deal with it but it should have been woven into the story and have them fall for each other more organically through adventure together, not through rolling in a field and playing with fruit.

mine was when anakin landed his fighter on the droid control ship

Not sure if I have shared this here already or not, but at this point I am more excited for Season 2 of Rebels than I am for Episode 7.

That it was really annoyed me too. Plus, how come it seems like Padame never aged. When Anakin and Padame first met, there looks to be a sizable age difference. Then, all of a sudden they're the same age. Always drove me crazy.

It is confirmed canon that the white makeup worn my the queens of Naboo served as a highly effective anti-aging cream.

See, I liked the love story, because when you look at the full arc of the 6 love becomes a major theme

Sure in Jedi we were happy Luke saved his dad,

but when viewed as a whole we see how Anakin's love, forbidden by the jedi, was what turned him evil. It is tragic that love is what caused his fear and created the hole for the emperor to exploit. But in the end the Love is what saved him, his love for Luke which is an extension of his love for Padme causes the light to defeat the dark within his soul, which opens it up for the light to defeat the dark in the universe

Love caused so much suffering, yet only love could end the suffering

it's all like full circle and ####

I liked the love story. I just thought they drew it out too long. I totally understand it being in there and I enjoyed the premise. But it just seemed to drag on without benefiting the story much more.

This has always bothered me too. In ep 1 Padme comes off as being very maternal with Anakin. If they had another child actor in place of Natalie Portman for the first film, the whole relationship may not have felt as forced.

Of course the bad writing and acting (from otherwise decent actors) presumably still would have been an obstacle.

eh

if she was 18 and he was 12, she won;t appear to age nearly as much from 18-23 as he will from 12-17

plus #### who want an older Padme, she;'s hot, she's perfect. She makes Carrie Fisher look like a hutt.

i can see that

i tended to just stare at the glorious beauty of Natalie Portman and get lost in those scenes

the bad acting thing kills me

can anyone seriously look at Mark Hamill and say that was not bad acting...

in retrospect the "vader is your dad" scene is comically poor acting, but we don;t care because we love the scene

Here are some stats:

Padme is 14 and Anikan is 9 in #1

Padme is 24 and Anikan is 19 in #2

Portman is 19 and Loyd is 10 when #1 is released

Portman and Heyden are the same age, both were 22 when 2 was released

I like Ep. 1-3 but the acting between Portman and Christensen is by far the worst in the series IMO.

What, you didn't believe she went from calling him that little boy from tatooine to marrying him by the end of the movie?? Must've been some juicy fruit, totally believable.

and then you couple that with incredibly poor written dialogue in those scenes (and I say low compared to Lucas's normally low dialogue standard) and it is even worse.

Everything that has transpired has done so, according to my design. Your friends, out there on the sanctuary moon, are walking into a trap, as is your Rebel fleet. It was I who allowed the Alliance to know the location of the shield generator. It is quite safe from your pitiful little band. An entire legion of my best troops awaits them. [mockingly] Oh, I'm afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive.
O'RLY?!?

As annoying and long as the pod race was, most kids absolutely loved that part, and it lead to some toy and video game sales that were different than previous SW movies.

I loved VI primarily for the beginning. Han is hanging on a wall, Luke shows up dressed in black, using mind tricks and fights a rancor. Lando and Leia incogneto threatening to blow everyone up with a thermal detonator. Scantily clad Twi'leks, boba fett getting tossed into the pit. More Palpatine screen time. There is a lot to like.

I still think V is the best, but I'd place VI over IV. I'd have to re-watch the prequels again to get a feel for their ranking. Maybe the best of the 3 might be better than IV for me, but I doubt it. I appreciate IV for it being the first and laying the groundwork, but the acting was horrid. IMO Hamill at that point was worse than Christensen in I or II, it's like his voice was cracking because he was just hitting puberty. And the little kid did okay in I for his age, but he isn't going to put in a Gary Oldman type performance at the age of 7 or whatever.

I've always equated jar-jar to the droids ewoks and wookies. I'm sure my dad just rolled his eyes at the time, but as a kid, I was more accepting of that.

I guess the Ewoks didnt win the war, but they won the battle of endor, bringing down the shield and allowing Lando and his fighters to destroy the death star. With any other leaders on the Death Star dying as well, the other ships surrender and the war is probably won (although further skirmishes probably proceed). So their presence starts the chain of events leading to the war being won and the end of the empire as we know it.

Meanwhile Vader kills the emperor and dies in the process.... This could probably happen with or without the ewoks helping the ground troops.

Without the ewoks the death star is not destroyed and the rebel fleet is probably destroyed in the air and on Endor. However, both Vader and the Emperor most likely die leaving the top of the Empire open for a new leader. With the power of the DS still in play the empire probably still stands with new leadership, for better or worse.

or I could just be rambling on starting one point and making another and not really knowing where I am going, kinda like ep I, II, III

the worst star wars movie is better than 90% of the non marvel stuff out there today in the sci fi/fantasy area

My only real complaint with I - III was the love story between Anakin and the Queen. It was just drawn out too long. That scene where they're laying in the field is probably the only part of any of the movies where I'm like, "This is stupid."
I put it right alongside whiny Luke on his home planet. He stunk up the joint for the first 15 minutes of IV

Love caused so much suffering, yet only love could end the suffering

it's all like full circle and ####
The love story wasn't the problem. It's the execution that stunk.

Yep. Terrible dialogue. Forced chemistry. Weird age gap. I feel like it could have been relieved a bit if Anakin wasn't a kid and Amidala a teenager in Ep1. No believe ability right out of the gate.

Is Star Wars Rebels good? It's a cartoon so I haven't gotten into it. Personally, I'm kind of annoyed that they are doing things in that time period, because I've had a dream for 10 years now of a movie called VADER that takes place between III and IV where Vader just routs the Jedi's, and I don't want them to forgo a movie because they are hamstrung by a "canon" cartoon.

Maul vs QuiGon and Maul vs Obiwan are the main redeeming battle of the movie.

:lmao:

Very good for what it is. My entire family watches it. Good stuff.

Top of my head:

V

VI

III

IV

II

I

Not much to be said about V - pretty easily the best movie IMO. Hoth was the balls, great lightsaber showdown with Luke/Vader, I am your father, Falcon inside the giant worm thing, Han getting frozen in carbonite.

VI would rival V were it not for the Ewoks. Unfortunately they're a pretty big chunk of the movie. The only saving grace is that I saw it as a kid, so I didn't mind it then. If I saw VI for the first time now it'd be a different story. The entire Ewok/Empire battle looked like a Benny Hill sequence. Sometimes I wonder why the stormtroopers wear all that armor if it doesn't stop a blaster anyway - in that movie, it doesn't even stop projectiles fired by teddy bears from a slingshot. But the Jabba sequence, Luke vs. Vader Part II were great.

I have III ahead of I. It's a pretty solid movie, more or less. Anakin is still annoying in it, but less so than in the other two. Seeing all the Jedi get cut down by the clones across the galaxy was pretty badass. The Obi-Wan/Anakin showdown, while a little over the top (they're swinging on towers that are falling down in lava, come on Lucas) was powerful.

IV is still good, I just wish they figured out how to do a real lightsaber fight. When you rewatch Vader vs. Obi-Wan now, it looks like two old men poking at each other with sticks (which I guess it kinda was).

I can't even remember what happened in II other than that they replaced Darth Maul with another old guy with a stick.

It's a crime that I is last despite having the best lightsaber fight in the entire group.

I found this podcast recently, it's Australian, called Plumbing the Death Star. It's a few comic book/sci-fi/etc. nerds just asking random questions and talking about it for 30 minutes. It's pretty funny. One of the episodes is "Is Obi-Wan Kenobi incompetent?" They brought up a lot of good points. When the twins are born, Leia gets hidden with Bail Organa. New planet, new name, good cover story, etc. They don't want Vader to ever find out he has a kid/kids, right?

So what does he do with Luke? Takes him back to Vader's home planet. Keeps his name. Gives him to his half brother. Then he moves there too, but unlike Luke, he does change his name - from Obi-Wan Kenobi to Old Ben Kenobi.

It's a funny podcast.

To me II is worse than I and it's not close. At least I had Darth Maul and Liam Neeson did a pretty good job portraying a veteran Jedi (when he wasn't talking midiclorians).

Ep II was completely unwatchable dreck with the awkward love scenes, the ridiculous CGI in the monster gladiator arena and the car chase scene on Coruscant. Dooku was boring and the clone battle at the end had a ton of potential but just fell flat.

If I come across Ep I on TV I may watch it for a couple minutes depending on where they're at in the movie. For II I'd just keep flipping every time.

Actually this is a pretty good point. I honestly couldn't even remember much that happened in II. That arena/bug/droid thing was crap, and the whole movie looked like a cartoon. You have swayed me.
