STAR WARS: Episode 7 (All-Time #1 opening box office.) (1 Viewer)

Welp, I just saw a massive spoiler elsewhere on the interwebs.

I tend to not really mind spoilers in general, but if you are really anal about this stuff, you might want to live in a closet for the next week.
If you must divulge, goto the spoiler thread please. I plan to avoid everything but its Fantasy playoffs this week. Can't totally log off.

Star Wars Fans Reacting To Phantom Menace In 1999

Early part of vid is before movie reactions and second part is after movie reactions.
Like I said, the majority left the theater liking Ep1.
Never understood the massive hate for the prequels. I know it's already been discussed ad nausea in this thread but I thought 1 and 3 were good. 2 had it's bad moments but the battles were great. I don't put the prequels on a pedistle like IV-VI as they are the best off all the movies so far, but the prequels weren't that bad.
You have no taste in films. Sorry to break it to you.
Ridiculous.

We are in a Star Wars thread. We are not talking about taste here. We are talking about Sci-Fi geek fest campiness to the highest degree.

Sheesh. LMFAO.

And now the circle is complete. Just as some people go out of their way to bash the prequels, there are others who go out of their way praise the prequels by saying the OT really wasn't that special.

Yeah, Duel of The Fates is probably a top 5 Star Wars scene, but let's not forget it took place in the final 15 minutes of a 2-hour movie. The rest of that film is stupid.

I could go on. Point is, you remember the precious handful of cool scenes in the prequels but completely gloss over the fact that the remaining 90% of screen time is filled with terrible CGI, wooden acting, wretched dialogue, and pointless plot and/or characters.

Maybe people have different opinions and they don't have to like what you like?

Personally I hated 1 and 2 but I don't care if somebody liked them. Bully on them.

Don't worry, I'll live.

Just watched Revenge of the Sith for first time in 5 or 6 years.

It's definitely the best prequel. I found myself glued to the screen much more than I was in the re-watching of the first two.

A lot of great scenes and moments in there.

Hayden is so tough for me, because he nails Anakin visually. He "looks" the part. But when he opens his mouth, 90% of the time it's cringe-worthy.

I don't think Ewan McGregor gets enough credit. He's a great actor and I think he nails Obi-won. Probably the best actor in the prequels.

Overall, Hayden and Portman stunk up the screen and everyone else was great.

The turn to the dark side made sense if you read the Revenge of the Sith book, from what I've heard, but it's too quick on-screen. Since 95% of people that see the movie don't read the book, the movie is what counts, and it happens too fast.

One minute he's turning the emperor in to the jedi, then he comes home and thinks about Padme and changes his mind. I guess when he kills Mace, the dark side completely rushes in, but that whole ten minute period of the film should have been longer and should have been fleshed out more, as it's basically the ENTIRE POINT OF THE PREQUELS.

I've always believed Attack of the Clones should have been the first prequel, and Revenge of the Sith should have been split into two movies, so they could work more on the storytelling.

In retrospect, Lucas's decision here is mindblowing. Vader is the most popular character in the series (sorry Boba), and we get, what, 30 seconds of him in the prequels?

Exactly, and he didn't do anything as Vader except ask where Padme was and scream.

Fortunately they've left a giant hole in the Darth Vader story that could be filled by a movie one day...

Just how massive was it, think it was legit?
Ron Jeremy massive. "Luke, I'm your father" level of massive, so yeah.. pretty huge.

How legit it is I'm not sure, but it does make sense given certain truths.
It's hard for me to imagine a spoiler that some nerdy star wars fan hasn't already thought of. I mean, my kids come home from school with all sorts of rumors from school, and then in this thread and with friends, it seems as if every possible scenario has been thrown out there.

If they actually succeed in a spoiler/twist so huge that no one has thought of it, I'll be shocked.

I liked the prequels as they were happening. Then I read the internets and learned that they were bad. Then I saw things in them that stunk. I even liked Hayden Christiansen and still do in certain ways. I think he's excellent at being angry, very average at his non-angry stuff, and horrid in his love scenes.

Then when I re-watched the first three movies, I remembered that Luke Skywalker was a pretty dreadful actor at times too. (his whining at the start of A New Hope is painful. Would he survive the twitter generation???)

Me and the kids have started on the prequels in prep for this new movie. It's the first time I've seen them in 5 or more years. We are through the first two. My initial thoughts are far more negative than I remembered.

The CGI is so bad it's painful. At times, I feel like I'm watching an Xbox one game. It's way too much and it ruins the movies.

Phantom Menace was ok, but they wasted an entire movie on Anakin as a boy. The entire movie's relevance to the other five movies was pretty small. Sure, it shows how they picked up Anakin from Tattoine, and how he already had amazing abilities, but that kind of thing could have been done in 15 minutes.

Attack of the Clones was ok, but again it felt like I was watching a video game, not a movie.

I don't know if the Blu-Ray edition makes it better or worse. But all I know is that those aren't movies I will watch again for a long time.

6-year old son loves Jar-Jar though. He is in the beginning of PM a bit too much, but overall he never really bothered me that much. A character for kids, meh.

I think the reason people are so pumped for the new movies is that the previews just look real. You feel like you could actually be there. Who in the heck watches Attack of the Clones and feels they are in a real place? It seems like a fake world.
If there is one thing that I wasn't a fan of was the saturation at times of the CGI but some of those battles still were pretty friggin cool. J.J. did well to go back to some of the conventional ways of film making while sprinkling in some CGI for TFA. Should really boost the quality of the film for sure. It's also one of the reasons why I can't wait to see this movie.Jar-Jar was always a comedy relief for a kid. I absolutely think he was the least interesting character (also most annoying) out of all of the films but he did serve some purpose.
Yeah. If 2000 CG shots is "sprinkled in", that's a pretty big sprinkler.

Probably a question for another thread, but do you guys think the original trilogy would survive the internet age?

For example, I never knew there was a group of people that hated the Ewoks. My entire life I thought they were a huge part of the Star Wars film and never thought a negative thing about them.

But at some point in the late 90's or early 2000's, I realized that many people didn't like the Ewoks. Now when I watch ROTJ, I find myself thinking some of those negative thoughts (how could little cuddly bears take down the empire, etc)

The CGI and Hayden are my primary offenders from the prequels, but I wonder if I would enjoy the prequels a lot more if I hadn't spent years reading how bad they were on the internet.

yeah I had thought going in effectively movies 1 and 2 would be merged into 1, 3 moved to 2, and then 3 would have been Vader systematically wrecking the Jedi order

I bought my 4-year-old nephew a whole outfit to wear to this from Disney. Hat, storm trooper shirt, shoes and he's wearing his Luke magic band. So pumped.

Probably a question for another thread, but do you guys think the original trilogy would survive the internet age?
If Star wars was a popular thing, I don't think so. If those movies were made today though with no Star Wars before, they'd be scoffed at as another teen demo grab.

Maybe Han and Luke being gay lovers?

Seriously though, this is why I'm not too worried about it getting spoiled for me. If I hear anything I just plan on pretending it was just another rumor and we've basically heard them all so far.

Is this to do with the Rey action figure kerfluffle?
Both of my kids are upset that there have been no Rey dolls... I guess that explains why they are not for sale yet.

Finn's face looks like that of the green alien the Rancor eats when Luke falls into the pit.

Well, maybe in the context of other CGI movies it is "sprinkled" in.

I'm sure Mickey Mouse would sign off on that.

The novelization of Revenge of the Sith was good. I really liked how they expounded on what was going on inside Yoda's head, "Oooohhhh.....fuuuuuuddddggge. Win, I cannot."

LOTR just killed it. And those movies were basically sendups of StarWars without spaceships.

I'm getting a bad feeling with this cutsie little robot that's now appearing in every TV commercial out there. Like Jar Jar Binx level bad. God I hope I'm wrong.
It's the hook for kids. It's not going to be Odious Comic Relief because, you know, it's a robot.
When Lucas realized how much every one hated Jar Jar, he significantly cut back on his lines for 2 and 3 but I think many of those comic relief lines went to 3PO instead who was really annoying in 2 all but ruining the Geonosis battle.

It does not look like BB8 can speak which will likely remove any possibility of being too big of an annoyance and hopefully will have more R2 like charm.

I never would have thought I would ever say this about any Star Wars movie but after seeing the "Fanduelesque" level of advertising on this thing and the hype, I kind of think it's going to be a mild disappointment to people who truly grew up with the Star Wars franchise (those people who were 8-12 years old in that block when the original and Empire came out).

I don't watch much TV so I haven't seen many ads either. It's anecdotal, but if you have a good portion of cord cutters and such not seeing the ads, perhaps that won't happen.

Never should have gotten rid of Darth Maul in the first prequel. Sure, he eventually has to die because of that whole "Always two...no more...no less" (and even that's kind of stupid) rule....but replacing him with crusty old (not an indictment on Christopher Lee) Count Dooku was definitely a step down in the action department; particularly since they never showcased a real sense that Dooku was a top level Jedi. Maul also would have been better than General Grievous....perhaps one of the lamest robots of all time. That mother####er coughs?....seriously? Killing Maul robbed them of showcasing any sweet Jedi fighting moves.

the level of licensed tie ins with other companies is astounding. Prob will make more on that then the ticket sales

If you haven't watched this yet, you'll enjoy the rewrite idea. 100% more Maul bring badass.

It's been posted way back, but this dude had some good storyboard ideas for how Ep1 & Ep2 could have gone.

What if Episode 1 were good

What if Episode 2 were good

But he wasn't a robot. He was a humanoid that had virtually all of his body replaced with cybernetics.
