so with the movie coming out in a matter of days, why haven't they been playing any of the first 6 movies on cable? I assumed they would to whip people into a frenzy, but yet they haven't shown them at all. seems weird. is it a licensing thing?
Because it's selling like hot cakes online and the DVDs are flying off the shelf

My wife helps out at a local library. She said the requests for the Star Wars DVD's (all 6) have been non stop and no library can keep them shelved.

Actually, the dvds seem hard to find. Going for $40-50 on amazon.

I just finished watching 1.

While there were a lot of things wrong in 1, the finale battle between Obi, Qui Gon and Maul was not one of them.

The fight scene contained the best part of the score in the movie and easily the best light saber battle in all 6 movies. Ray Park might not how to act but the guy was so agile he really made the fight come alive.

And the debut of the dual sided light saber is one of the cooler moments in all of the prequels.

Most of the time if a studio doesn't give advanced screenings to critics it is a very bad sign, you are correct. This, however, is a different situation.

That's what we thought when Phantom came out and then again when Attack of the Broomsticks and then Revenge of the Yoda, it's been a different situation for quite a while. Usually a good solid motion picture has some well advanced reviews. I don't see how Disney expects good worth of mouth advertising at this pace. Might not be the juggernaut everyone thinks.

The guy who looks like the son of the actor Dennis Haysbert, should his lightsaber be rainbow colored or just a straight solid color? I know nothing about him but in interviews it was hard to tell, NTTAWWT of course.

Chris Hardwick: No spoilers but #TheForceAwakens is beyond amazing. Truly. It was an emotional experience that exceeded my hopes!!!

Spoiler free tweets about the premiere are all positive. (Not a big surprise) One tweet said "easily best SW since 1983, maybe 1980."

Opens on Friday and no reviews yet on RT? That's usually not a good sign. I think I might have to wait for Blu Ray.
No reviews are allowed until Wednesday.
Are you saying no movies have reviews out until Wed before they open? Because that is not true. If you are saying that Disney wanted the reviews held until Wed, that doesn't very good either.
They are allowing previews today and then people releasing them tomorrow. Stop looking into it.

so, my brother in law owns a movie theater. He was only one yr old when the original Star Wars came out.

we were talking yesterday and he's like "I don't get the big deal about this Star Wars, I mean, I'm showing it, but its going to fade pretty quickly. The studio is showing this in every theater in America so it'll be saturated."

I said, "hey, dude. If I were you, I'd go hire about twice as many staff, order twice as many pizzas and beer, and twice as much popcorn and candy, and you might want to hire a security guy at the door because you have no idea what's about to hit you."

He's like no way, it aint happening.

So i tell him, did you realize that Hollywood blvd is already closed down due to fans blocking the damn thing waiting for opening night in 4 days. You can't go down Hollywood blvd right now. He just gives me a crazy look.

So, I realize i'm not getting through to him. I say, "Tell me, what was the best movie at your theater in the last 5 years, most popular, longest lasting, highest grosses for you?" He says "the first Hunger Games".

I go, "how long did it last?" He says about a month.

so I say, "dude, when I was 10, when this movie came out, we sat in the theater and watched it twice. We didn't leave, nothing like this had ever been made before. Do you realize that all the modern marketing about movies like when you go to McDonalds and they put a Transformer in your happy meal, all the batman lunchboxes etc, all the tie in marketing didn't exist until Star Wars came out. The reason it exists is because Star Wars ran at theaters for a ####### YEAR. A Year! That gave all the retailers that wanted to jump on the Star Wars bandwagon enough time to go to china, produce some cheap plastic Star Wars stuff and jam it into your happy meal. Prior to that, it didn't exist. People waited in mile long lines to see this movie. You will have a line stretching at least 2 city blocks out your door waiting to get in, and it will be like that for at least a week. And if the movie is ####### awesome, it will be like that for 3 weeks because people will come back and rewatch it mulitple times. I saw the first star wars 50 times. Name me a ####### movie that you've seen 50 times at the theaters, not on cable. There isn't one. So, listen to me, go load up on popcorn and beer and pizza. You have no idea what's about to hit you.

He stopped talking. I think he was stunned.
Kinda off topic, but I'd like to hear more about how your brother got into the owning a movie theater business. Its an idea I've considered as a second career down the road as a quasi-retirement thing, but I really have no clue about the ins and outs.

I'm excited to see a new one and get the bad taste of the 2nd 3 out of my mouth. We have one of those silly private leather back seating places up the block. Mostly retired folks around us now so getting tickets to the hot new movie simply isn't difficult here. Even Star Wars doesn't impact the elderly around here. Now if Eastwood had a new film out...probably be a 3 week wait to get tickets near me.

Since the trolls have arrived and we are getting closer to spoiler time, it is time to check out of this thread.

I hope everyone enjoys the movie!

In this case, nobody wants the plot spoiled. The film has enough hype without any reviews. Disney is playing a long game here; let the hype build to the date of release. The reviews will change absolutely no one's opinion about seeing it. Once fan word of mouth gets out, tommyboy's BIL can expect these type of crowds at his theater.

I think the excitement is with the younger folks. Big turnout on Thu, Fri, and maybe Sat but by Sunday the fever will die down. Gonna be tough for Star Wars to rake in more than Jurrasic Park earlier this year let alone hit the Avatar numbers. Kids are into Chris Pratt now, who is Mark Hammil to them?

Yep, I'm out too. I expect to like it either way, especially as I'll be watching with my two boys and two nephews. Can't wait.

Enjoy everybody.

I hate to go Christo on you but

:lmao:

I don't want folks to go nuts, I'm just having fun. Look at my avatar, of course I want to see this movie and have mostly avoided this 62 page thread but I have to say if I wanted to hook some fish this thread is ripe.

I posted a few pages back, please don't suck and I expect I will like this one simply because Solo has what seems to be a pretty large roll here. I posted a few spoilers I expect in the other thread, would never ruin the experience for anyone.

I hope it's good.

You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day

As luck would have it, we are going on a Disney cruise leaving on Friday. My understanding is that there is a theater on board that will be playing this constantly. Giddy up.

TFA may double Jurassic World's numbers domestically.

I was thinking about this the other day after watching this hour long video w/ all the lightsaber fights in the entire saga. If you watch the video you'll notice that the first 40 minutes are eps 1-3. A few battles in each movie. Then you get to the OT, and there is basically one 1v1 in each movie (Obi-Wan v Vader, Luke v Vader, Luke v Vader/Sideous).

the prequels have better, cooler fights...but nothing beats Luke v Vader part II in ROTJ. Not even Obi-Wan v Annakin in Sith.

Long story but I already paid to see it a second time. If this is as much fun as it sounds like, I'm sure there will be the people who see it fifty times like they did A New Hope.

MoP, I'm pretty sure my 14yo will want to see more of Daisy Ridley and couldn't give a rats ### about Mark Hamil or Chris Pratt.

Choreography wise, the prequels have it. But they have no meaning. As awesome as Maul vs Quigon/Obi was it was just a battle because "hey we're here at the same spot at the same time." Luke vs Vader in Empire had huge stakes. An unprepared Luke faced off against the big bad, way out of his league enemy. Then the reveal took it to another level. With Luke vs Vader round 2, the stakes were huge. Killing off Maul stole any chance for an emotional rematch.

Who cares about the kids. They don't have any money. I'm 38 and I'll probably see it 5 times in the theater if its as good as they say.

The bigtime Star Wars fans are now in their 30's-50's and have money to spend. We are all huge dorks. It's going to be like the 14-year-old girls when Leo died on the Titanic.

Every record will be broken, if there's a place to bet, go and bet.
