Star Wars Universe (2 Viewers)

9. TPM - Don't understand how these last two aren't on the bottom of everyone's list.  The dialog and acting are atrocious. Jar Jar Binks is in them. RotS is saved by a much better script and standout acting from Ewan McGregor.

10. AOTC - See above
For me Solo is the worst just because it was bland and felt less like it was trying to do something and more like it had a checklist of "Han Solo" things it needed to tick off.

At least Ep 1 had Duel of the Fates and Darth Maul.  Ep 2 got the ever so slight edge over Solo from me  just because it was still continuing a story and a couple battles were fun.  Agree 100% about the acting though.

Early Audience scores positive. About what I expected. Critic scores bad usually mean audience score good. Force Awakens was very positive too. Probably means it's better than Last Jedi at least. Still looks like a mess from the previews and leaks. I'm sure general audiences will love it.

Episode 1, 2, 3, = C

Episode 4, 5, 6, = A

Episode 7 = A

Episode 8, 9, = F

Movie was a bunch of short clips with some dialogue thrown in the middle. Episode 9 had the foundation of a good story however it needed more Jedi and Sith and much much less Rebel stuff. If you ever have a Star Wars marathon... stop after Episode 7.

I do think in the end I’ll like 7 more than 9.  But an F?  I literally haven’t met anyone else that thinks that. I’m not sure what kind of Star Wars you have to be to watch that movie and give it an F.

Ending was great. It’s ok to admit you just don’t like the franchise man.
:lmao:

You would say that about the ending wouldn't you. Like I said, the general movie going public that enjoys watching transformers, twilight and Fast and the furious over and over will love this. Hits all the right beats for that easy going mindless adventure that you don't really need to think about.

im glad people who aren't really Star Wars fans got something to enjoy now too.

Yeah, have to agree with this for the most part.  Not a horrific ending by any means and could have been far worse.

lol “I’m smarter than you because I don’t enjoy the fantasy space war movie”

Of course you did. You listed off 3 dumb movies and said of course people who like those will like this.
Never said people who watch those movies are dumb. Dumb movies can be plenty entertaining. IMO E9 is just a big dumb action blockbuster. If I didn't know anything about Star wars except spaceships, laser swords and blaster fights, I'd probably enjoy this movie.  When I get ready to watch a Fast and Furious movie, I know I'm going to see some ridiculous #### that doesn't make sense. So I'm cool with that going in. Star wars used to have rules of the galaxy and a lore. That doesn't really matter much anymore.

Like I said before it's my fault for getting too immersed in a franchise and caring too much about the characters and stories within it. This happens all the time with franchises. People that enjoy the books or comics or source material usually end up disappointed because they told a better story than what was adapted (or made up) on screen or in sequels.

Enjoy your movie. Don't feel like you have to defend it every step. Your not going to change my mind.

I haven’t defended anything. I said I enjoyed it, that’s not defending.  I don’t care at all if you like it.

For whatever its worth.... My neighbor is a big star wars and Marvel fan boy.  Of course he saw it last night and his response was something along the lines of how he's even more angry with Rian Johnson for wasting an episode and you should go see this one.

I'm a bit of an optimist, and even I am a bit annoyed that they sort of wasted an episode.  I think JJ did a brilliant job of making 9.  He was faced with some logistical difficulties.  Carrie Fisher died, and this was supposedly going to be her movie.  Rian killed off Snoke and Luke...which completely hamstrung JJ.  He did brilliantly to swing everything around with an incredible finale.

BUT...there's simply no excuse for allowing Rian Johnson to write the 2nd part of a trilogy and do his own thing.  It should have been centrally written by one person or one team.  It's a tough mistake I think Disney will learn from.  But the trilogy did suffer a bit from it.  In the future when watching...why even watch TLJ?  For those that hated it anyway, that's a good thing.  But I kind of liked it.

That being said, I don't have any real fundamental issues with anything JJ did in 9.  I think he did an exceptional job of wrapping up the story based on where things were and what he had to work with.

So far fan reviews are at 88% fresh.
I enjoyed the movie and would rate it pretty well but it’s been less than 24 hours, most of the people going last night are probably die hard fans. The same folks that saw Phantom Menace multiple times the first weekend and wrote articles like “Meesa Loved Him!” about Jar Jar (famous article on Ain’t It Cool News for those that have never heard the reference.)

Probably so. When I made that post there were 1200 or so reviews, now at over 7300 reviews and at 86%

I think this is well put. Others have said it before but there really should have been a Kevin Feige-esque team mapping this all out ahead of time. Kind of haphazardly throwing this together doesn’t fly any more with how television has been knocking serialized and plot arc story telling out of the park and after Marvel’s success in film. it doesn’t need to be Babylon 5 with every major and minor plot point mapped out ahead of time, but at least most of the major story arc established with a clear beg-middle-end in mind. If they wanted to do the one-shots and give other directors and writers chances, that’s what the Rogue Ones and Solo type movies are for.

Given where they went with Rey’s character in this one, a lot more time should have been spent setting that up in the 2nd movie. How cool would it have been that if instead of some kid with force powers sweeping a floor, they had ended TLJ with Kylo kneeling before a hooded figure on the Sith throne saying something like “but she’s a nobody! She comes from nothing!” And then the audience gets a quick snippet of the Emperor’s voice saying “No, she is so much more...” or something like that?

It definitely would have helped. Spreading the movies out time wise as well. TLJ happens basically hours after TFA. So it plays as if it's one long movie when the audience had 2 years to wait for it. The narrative makes no sense because of that. Give it like 3-5 years in story and then you can fill in a lot of the gaps missed with exposition or backstory to build characters.

That middle part seems at odds with your  posts saying that Disney did a fantastic job with Star Wars so far.

Come on man.  This post reeks of elitism, and over what? A blockbuster space opera popcorn flick?  :lmao:

It's what Star Wars has become. But it didn't have to get here. They could have made something enjoyable for the hardcore fans that also appealed to general audiences. See marvel. I guess I'm just annoyed that I get crap for wanting more from Star Wars because I've seen the awesome storylines and characters that came from it. And now it's just like any other IP out there. Just another big dumb blockbuster that everyone can consume and forget about in a month or so. Its no different than the marvel Comic book guys saying "it was different in the comics." The difference there is they got a lot of what they wanted and all their heroes were treated with respect in the movies. It was satisfying for both the hardcore and the casual fans.

Fwiw I do agree they should have had one person do the whole thing. I like all 3 but ep8 does stand out as significantly different.

Here’s my ranking of them all not that anybody cares.

1. Empire

2. Rogue - I go back and forth here. I love Rogue One but Empire is the standard

3. New Hope. Just a classic

4. Force Awakens. Did an excellent job bringing it all back.

5. Last Jedi. Hated the casino stuff but loved the rest. Throne room battle and Luke vs Kylo were two of my favorite scenes in the whole series.

6. Rise of Skywalker. First hour was disjointed at times but then it really took off.

7. Return of the Jedi. I know this is near the top of every 48-year-old’s list but it just didn’t pop as much to me as other two. Anybody defending the Ewoks while taking shots at the Disney efforts needs to sit down too.

8. Solo. Probably doesn’t need to be on the list but it was fun! Watched it a few times with my kid now. Young Han did a good job. The villain was kind of lame and it will suck if they don’t follow up with the Maul bring back.

9. Sith - I liked it a lot more than 1 and 2. Ewan as obi-wan rules. Looking forward to that tv series

10. Phantom - sure my kid will like this. I hated learning about Vader’s backstory. Sometimes bad guys are just bad and we don’t need to know why but there is some good stuff in here.

11. Clones - I will never watch this movie again. It’s just so boring.

They’ve copied so much else from the original trilogy maybe this was part of the design all along?

Screw stuff up in the first release so they have an excuse to go back and re-release a new edition in 10 years with extra scenes like your spoiler suggestion filling in gaps and retconning inconsistencies.

It made a mint for Lucas, and the company in charge is making money hand over fist remaking their own classics.  🤔

Hollywood has been out of ideas for years now, but they have a lot of material to go pretty much anywhere they want in this galaxy.

And yet they brought back Palpatine at the last second.
