Starbucks- is there a bigger waste of money? (1 Viewer)

Like others, Starbucks coffee tastes terrible to me. I'd rather get a coffee at a hot dog sandwich cart than theirs.

That said, those frappa-milkshakes hit the spot occasionally in the summer.
Yup ..... If I'm getting just coffee I don't go SB ...if I want some espresso frap or a nice cold brew I will

I had a can of their mocha energy drink that actually tasted pretty good. But I bought it at a grocery store and it was only 3 bucks.

What if I were to tell you the mocha double shot used to be .99 not long ago lol

You can't just single out starbucks. Every coffee place is overpriced. We go to a few different ones, but only on weekends.
I have never wanted to punch someone in the face after going to Dunkin' Donuts to get my wife a coffee.
Dd is awful

And not cheap either lol
:shrug:Wifey likes it. She isn't opposed to the Starbucks too but it is rare (thankfully) and it is significantly less than Starbucks. Plus, they don't hand over some little cup of lemonade with strawberries floating in it and demand $7 for it at DD.
Apples and oranges
You are comparing the wrong things

Plain coffee is not $6 at SB but yes you can also get this type of drink at Dd which is $5-$6

Dunkin also carries "crazy" drinks like a peppermint mocha toasted white chocolate latte

It's not SB it's the drink. But I guess you can thank SB for making DD carry those drinks

Eta: they are all overpriced....SB for sure but a cold brew at SB is not much more than a cold brew at DD
I get my wife a coffee with hazelnut in it and when I do, I don't feel like I was just in a prison shower and dropped my soap.
I get that but you didn't order the passion fruit refresher you are complaining about....order one of those At DD to feel extra dirty ;)
Mmmm…passion fruit is my favorite 😋

Valet parking.

Why should I pay someone to do something I do myself the other 99% of the time, then waste time waiting for my vehicle when I’m ready to go?
Depends on the situation. A nice restaurant in a part of the city with terrible parking? Valet is so worth it.
Nah. I like the added ambiance of choosing a spot with the least broken glass and undomiciled folks nearby. It helps me appreciate the privilege of haute cuisine.

Seriously, the only circumstance I choose valet is when my wife insists on it. When that (rarely) occurs, I typically offer to drop her off, as a last-ditch effort to self park.

I think their dark roasts are terrific.

As a black coffee drinker, I think SBUX tastes great and spending $3 for a Venti black with my own mug doesn't seem like a giant waste of money to me.
You're obligated to say that though......

Why?
You live near the birth of Starbucks

It would be like me saying I hate cheese steaks ;)
I thought many people in the PNW turned their noses up at Starbucks, in favor of non-corporate, hipster coffee.

Ha! Couple of things....I grew up in Texas and moved here in '96, well after the emergence of SBUX.

And screw Seattle. Assuming that an Oregonian loves everything that comes from the state of Washington is like assuming Michiganders love everything that comes from Ohio.

But SBUX dark roast beans are delicious. I'll die on this hill. I once asked for a dark roast from Dunkin Donuts on the east coast, was laughed at served the worst cup of coffee I've ever had in my life. I'd rather drink Folgers from Spirit Airlines.

I think the hint is in the stock symbol being used

I'm long BROS not SBUX.

And Dutch Bros coffee might be even worse than Dunkin Donuts. It's swill. But they sell the hell out of hopped up sugar drinks and I understand addiction very well.

Some do, but convenience is a big factor for me and when I want a good black coffee, SBUX works just fine and is everywhere.

We buy whole beans from Costco - San Fran French Roast. Great bang for your buck.

Stopped at local Starbucks this am. I usually get a grande latte with one pump of flavoring. I use to think it was way overpriced at $.40 for flavoring, let alone just one pump. This morning it was $.80 for my one pump of flavoring.

I like Starbucks Pike Place roast. Usually get a grande or venti with cream. It's consistent and good. Sure there is better out there. (If you are ever in the KC area, Broad Street Coffee is tremendous).

But you guys saying random gas station coffee is better than Starbucks clearly haven't done much traveling.

I've forced down some awful stuff on long road trips many a time that are all far worse than Starbucks. And that's pretty consistently true. I can't actually think of a single gas station I'd consider better.

We got a machine that grinds the beans automatically for each cup that more than paid for itself (16oz/day for me.) I'll get SBux when they have seasonal flavors - no pumpkin spice lattes over here but they have Lebkuchen (gingerbread) during the holidays. If I'm on a roadtrip, McCafe actually has very good coffee.

For fraps, I make my own, 8 oz ice, 8 oz milk, 4tsp instant coffee, one scoop of chocalate protein powder

Cigarettes is a good one. Diamonds less so since they don't depreciate much and sometimes even appreciate in value. I think the new car smell might be a bigger waste of money, especially over a lifetime. I don't understand Americans who insist on buying new cars.

After my older sons basketball game he asked to go to Starbucks. I NEVER go but agreed because heck... the kid has had to go through a lot (his Mom) and he played well in a hard physical basketball game.

He wanted a strawberry refresher. I knew I had to get the younger son something too. So I got a medium and the other one a small. $12 for this. $12. Not a typical. $12.

BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY. Is there anything a bigger waste of money? I'll wait.
Starbucks is one of those places that might as well not exist for me. As you noted, it seems wildly overpriced. But also, I only ever drink black coffee, and theirs is horrible IMO -- much too bitter for my tastes. If I was travelling and needed to stop someplace for coffee, I'd strongly prefer McDonalds to Starbucks. Second choice would be a random gas station.

Speedway gas station by my home has one of those machines where the beans are ground fresh per cup that is as good or better than anywhere. 1.50 for a 16oz. Also McDonalds coffee is very good bang for the buck.

McD uses a quality bean. Medium roast. More:

They are 100% Rainforest Alliance Coffee Beans from Honduras, Columbia, Peru and Brazil.

i like the iced coffee and iced americano, not the prices….considering it is half ice. i wouldn’t feel so bad if they started using coffee ice cubes once and for all.

Medium? You sure you were in Starbucks?
I wasn't about to play their random names for sizes that aren't really sizes game.
It identifies as venti

so, i went to a pair of starbucks in italy and the prices were similar to here, offerings as well, but the actual spaces were much bigger and more inviting. they don’t take sbux cards and they are hideously slow. they were both very busy.

other thing i noticed here upon my return is that the venti (20 in italian language) used to be 20 ounces but is now 24 ounces. did the size of this drink recently increase or am i misremembering?

edit to say that it seems the cold venti has always been 24 to accommodate ice it seems. the hot is 20. i didn’t know this somehow…..

Personally, I have never been a fan of sb. They offer a few beans I enjoy.

My first visit to Europe in the early 90s set my standard.

I will hit sb out of convenience or lack of options.

Why are you back in the USA? Just the holidays?

I like the mocha Frappuccino but it seems to always be a little different each time. When it is a little sweeter it is much better. Not sure how to customize it to make it that way each time.

Almost started a new thread on this but I saw this one.

Can somebody explain Dutch Bros to me like I'm Shuke? I live in a small city/large town where we have two of them and it doesn't matter the time of day - the car line is massive! 10:30 PM on a random Tuesday? As dozen deep. I was driving in the Phoenix area last night around 6:00 PM and drive by one that was packed.

Despite the above commentary, I feel like I've barely seen anybody with Dutch Bros cups. Further, my assumption is that generally soccer moms with expendable incomes and a taste for coffee would be their demographic. However, Mrs. Woz would fall into this demographic (I don't want to know what we spend on Starbucks and Dunkin over the course of the year) but she doesn't even go.

My understanding is that Dutch Bros is just coffee. Are they secretly dealing cocaine? Who exactly are waiting in these lines?

I'm flummoxed.

The nice part about ordering with online apps is you can choose things like how many shots of the syrup you want and it makes it easy to find the perfect order for you.

before insurance resets and we go to a HDHP we got in some last appointments. very little family visit. hit our place in NC for a bit. i’m loving being back, life is so much easier and not a struggle every day. except for the sbux cost.

Thanks. I may try that

Breakfast for two people at McDs was $23 the other day. I'd say that is a worse deal than what you described.
Someone who went into a coma in, say, 2017-18 and then woke up today ... if all they had to go by was the prices of "cheap" items, they'd think they'd been out for 30-something years. I've read the first twenty or so responses to this thread, and it's a perfect testimony all the way down.

Without looking it up: Were ~1990 prices (groceries, fast food, take-out coffee, donuts, etc.) closer to 2015 prices than 2015 prices are to today's prices? I know gas shot up during W's term shortly after the Iraq invasion ... but that didn't seem to percolate much through the overall price-structure system. Meh, probably just rosy memories.

Hard to find when travelling unless a local tips you off ... but do you (and @WDIK2 ) have some gas station coffee discoveries in your area? Like secret portals the Coffee Gods have hidden in non-descript gas stations and convenience stores that just have ridiculously good, basic coffee. Doing a simple thing well, not letting it get old, lots of loyal customers partaking and preventing it from sitting all morning, etc. Always nice to stumble upon one of those.

There's quite a bit of info on Dutch Bros in the stock thread. I've owned the stock off and on since it IPOd a few years ago. I don't drink their "coffee" because they don't really sell COFFEE. They don't have drip coffee and that's what I like.

Instead they serve coffee adjacent drinks and energy drinks and their target market is teens and college students. So it stands to reason why you don't see people with them since you're now a grown-up.

They name their drinks things like "Iced Annihilator" and pump in the sugar and caffeine. You know, things that are highly addictive. They generally staff the place with young, vibrant, energetic folks who look like they're going to a rave. They used to have young hawts who would flirt with midddle-aged goons but they've buttoned it up since they went public.

Hate the "coffee"; love the stock.

i like the green bublrs anyone who knows the life altering gas station that is kwik trip or kwik star if you are in iowa knows what im talkin about take that to the bank brochachos

now that this thread exists anyhow i expect that starbucks will surely fail as a corporation in the next two or three weeks so the bigger question is what will society do with all of the empty corner former starbucks locations take that to the bank brohans

I live in a small town in a metro-area. There are 5-6 coffee shops including StarBucks in a 4 block area. Then a mile out on bigger street there are 3-4 more. Bigby, Scooters, couple private places. I read that coffee shops average after all expenses including rent and employees make a 12-15% profit margin on regular coffee drinks, 18-20% margin on specialty drinks.
